I really dont know why people are here anymore. They dont seem to like anything Prince does anymore. Its no wonder he doesnt release much music anymore with the fans he has. The good new for the people here is that he has seemed to listen as he barely releases a song now over 3:30 so I guess you all are happy. I LOVE the long jams the best actually.
those extended songs of the 80s especially 4 me, just gave a deep glimps into that mysterious purple world, the sounds and echoes vocals etc it was never enough 4 me.
The only 2 I don't care for is the 2nd half of the Line, and the part 2 3 4 of I Wish U Heaven. |

Okay, I wasn't really serious with that one. I could have seen both getting trimmed a bit for some additional space for one more song to be included on the album though. The outro with the strings on "Purple Rain" is a bit unnecessary and I've always preferred the edits of "When Doves Cry". Of course, the album is perfect the way it is in the end.
Gotta disagree with you about this. The full version of WDC is much better. The edits really bug me. A few weeks ago, I was at a karoake bar (unusual for me), and somebody did WDC. It was amazing how many people knew and loved all the various screams in the outro.

well, there are tons of songs, that are way too long, almost on every album...Like Bono from U2 said, Prince needs an editor....
I know many people will disagree but for example almost every song on 1999 is way to long...thats why i dont like to listen 2 it.

ohhh your talking about the Romance 1600 dvd
I agree, the Revolution actually did come out on that and take over the set.
I posted a part of the story in that Romance 1600 era thread
As far as I know even bootleggers haven't bothered to transfer the old cassette to DVD or digital so far, which is a pity Did I miss something or what? (not asking where, just what).
The Laser Disc was ripped and distributed years ago. It's out there. Chili Sauce. |

It's probably just because I heard the edits first (or at least recall hearing them first).
There's been some good examples of what songs that should have been shorter in this thread though.
I like "Ol' Skool Company" a lot, but yeah, it sort of drags towards the end.
That "Friend, Lover, Sister" thing could have gone into more interesting directions with its length (I don't mind "Saviour", it's proggy enough to me).
"She's Always In My Hair" is in my TOP5 Prince songs, but the extended version somehow makes it lose its bite.
Nobody needed the "pt. 2" of "New Power Generation" on Graffiti Bridge.

I disagree.
the 1999 album is exactly like it is supposed to be: a masterpiece.
I looove this record with those extended songs.
1999 is an essential top 3 Prince-album, imho.

The Holy River comes to mind.
It shouldn't even have a start.
Interesting how we appreciate different aspects of P.'s work...i really can't relate to this comment at all..the Holy River for me is beautifull song and more importantly is a key song for understanding P.'s psyche and Mayte's relationship. ......
If you want to bash output of P. feel free to bash the latest work, planet earth, etc.., i will join you, but Holy River..no..
As for looong versions...well ''Sleep Around'' clearly is a too outstreched for me...with a good edit it would have been a fine first single....imo..

I never thought Sleep Around went on too long.
Actually it was one of the songs that I hoped would get a
remix/extended version released.
But I've always liked songs that are longer and drag on. |

I think a big factor is whether it's a studio cut or live.
The full album version of Love Bizarre annoys me.... but the full version on Romance 1600 Live is amazing..... in fact I can't really listen to the studio after hearing that.
It goes places, adds new parts. And SHeila took it even further with her version of that arrangement which she still uses to this day.
An arrangement that PRINCE created not SHEILA!!!!!
First, you don't KNOW for sure that Prince created the arranagement. The Revolution was on stage but so was Sheila's band including Eddie M. They might have created together..... you don't know unless you were in the rehearsals when they created it.
.
Second, even if Prince did create the new arrangement himself, Sheila took it and made it even BETTER in her own live shows. She does the "new part" cue like Prince, but she adds in other elements cued by "Strawbery", "Whipped Cream" and "jazz". (If you don't know what I"m talking about you have never seen or heard her version).
.
Also, they do this cool, upbeat ending where the horns go wild and she sometimes scats along with them. I had always assumed she was referencing some other song (e.g. like Prince does with A Train) but I asked Eddie M on Facebook and he told me they created that ending themselves (ie.. him and Sheila).
.
So don't be dissin' Sheila.

Eye love Sheila! Would never diss her. Eye have seen her live without Prince MANY times! Also have met her. Eye was just speaking of that first version live of "Love Bizarre" that PRINCE created. What she did afterwards to it, did add to it and make it better in her show. Eye also like her live version of "Erotic City" with her brother imitating Prince's part.. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. |
