I'm not saying it's not a good tune I happen to love the music and vocal delivery, The tune is not the issue, lyrics with negative connatations is the issue. As you say yourself these are lyrics that COULD be seen as homophobic and if Prince has the freedom to speak them we have the freedom to discuss them.

Also the tune being good is neither here nor there, There are many songs with problamatic lyrics that have "good tunes". I love dancing to House Of Pains Jump Around but I cringe every time I hear him say "If the girl steps up I'm smacking the Ho" just one of a thousand examples I could give.

Like the music and like the flow, delivery and generally interesting choice of words - so musically, and superficially, I like.

That said, while I do acknowledge that Prince has written about lesbianism before in songs like "Bambi", this does seem to have specific undertones of moral and/or religious disgust which I personally find quite distastful.

Whether you want to attribute this to his Jehovah's Witness faith (I can't say that I know enough about it to comment knowledgeably), songs like this, and those like "1+1+1=3" are genuinely troubling.

They are also damn funky and enjoyable to listen to (if not to think about).

Which does put me in a quandry about this sort of thing - Prince clearly has some views which I find objectionable, and which run counter to a generally liberal (in the broadest sense of the word) enlightenment view of personal freedom - so I tend to be somewhat conflicted about supporting him at times like these.

He is a very strange man - sometimes producing the most wonderful things, sometimes the most odd, and occasionally, the worrying.

But mostly wonderful.

I agree with others who think the song is about feeling betrayed/played after being cheated on. I agree. Prince has had a fascination with lesbians for years. Bambi, Loveleft Loveright, The One, Wendy and Lisa in the Revolution. He wants what he can't have. It seems to intrigue him. I think the song shows bitterness towards a cheating woman who he knows he can't truly have. He stated that the song is not prejudicial. The lyrics may not be overly sensitive but I don't believe they are homophobic. Besides, the groove is funky and addictive. I love it!

I saw this in the paper this morning and so rushed online to download it.

I was excited as it said a 'guitar riff' funk etc.

Disappointed is not the word!

I am sorry but this again is that weirdly recorded (Where the sound doesn't quite sit right, sounds amaturish) the vocals seem pasted on. I personally feel that this is the worst song Prince has ever done. Or in recent times.

I sat there so bored from the first minute this morning. Was he singing or talking, or just randomly saying silly things? I dont know. It was uninteresting, uninspiring and totally pointless at this point in his career. Why he is pushing out this pap? I am sorry but i am tired of getting excited about faceless jams. Either be a live act or concentrate on making a decent song.

This kind of song should be part of developement not just releasing it for releasing its sake. This could have potentially been developed into something decent but again he just took the easy way out.

I agree. Good guitar, which is quite catchy but the lazy drums, lazy bass, poor vocal delivery and poor mixing and production pulls it all down. I think he is incredible lazy in the studio now. And just ‘makes do’ Its like someone who becomes so arrogant with there work they think everything they produce is genius. Trust me I want something amazing to happen, but this isn’t not it. Its not even in the right direction. Its going backwards again.

The track is a tale of heartache in the wake of a lover leaving him for a woman. To my thinking, if he recorded a song with homophobic lyrics with the intent of being controversial, that's even worse than if they accurately reflect his thoughts.

The "Family Name" comparison is apt. How would he feel if someone decided to call him derogatory racial names "just to stir up some controversy"? Absurd.

I can't see what's all the fuss about. It's a demo, so it has a rough sound, which I don't dislike, but anyway.

The story is simple: a man is angry to a girl who made him believe she wanted him, and instead is cheating on him with other girl/s.

If she cheated with another guy, nobody would complain (and it would be nothing new, too).

What's interesting is I never heard a song in which Prince speaks about male homosexuality explicitly, while it's at least the second song about lesbians (Bambi being n.1).

Still it doesn't seem homophobic to me, a cheater is a cheater and yes lesbian sex can be dirty as much as eterosexual sex. Especially if you're cheating on someone. If he's calling his ex a "bearded woman" it's surely quite offensive, but he called someone "sexy motherfucker" and another one "irresistible bitch" so I can't say I'm surprised. razz

The title seems to hint we should think about it as metaphorical, though. WHich at the moment I'm absolutely unable to do, due to ill kids and sleepless nights, so I'll just enjoy the funk.

all in all this song is just another song where prince sounds stupid using phrases from cultures he is not apart of and clearly knows nothing about .. its like when he tries to sound all hip hop and he just sounds stupid .. or when he tries to sound like he knows what the bible is all about and he just sounds like he is repeatings something someone else told him to say .. none of it sounds genuine or from a place of knowing .. it sounds like it comes from a place of condescension .. like princey thinks he knows best but he really doesn't know much of anything anymore, including how to write a song that does not suck
