these explanations are killing me lol this is looking more and more like the imdb forums

/

sometimes what it sounds like is what it actually is.

/

whenever anyone complains that prince's lyrics these days are like a 13 year old's, there

are people yelling "it's just a pop song, what do you want from prince" blablabla.

/

now he tosses out this 'off the cuff' joint and all of a sudden we're supposed to open our

minds and read between the lines, because clearly prince is using clever metaphores on

us.

falloff

prince can be a dick, we all know that. this song is proof of that. if you have to clear up

the song title and mention that it's "not prejudicial", within 2 hours of it's release, you're

going to have to rethink your lyrics, no? or perhaps just admit that you're trying to stuff

a year's worth of doorbanging into a 3 minute ditty, just to cover your bases.

/

literary analyses by those who could prattle over an hour about a man eating an orange,

as if that was somehow correllating to moby dick and melville's penis envy, what remains

is a lyric that any casual listener will interpret as spiteful, childish and ignorant.

/

so instead of a press release about a new album, we got another mud slinger for our mid

november appetites.

yay!

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Is Twitter really the only way to hear it? Now I can only read the lyrics and judging from them, Prince's brain is still on vacation.

You don't have to be signed up with twitter to get the link and download the song. Just google "3rdeyegirl twitter" and then look at their twitter feed and find the link from this morning and find the link that starts with "we", right click and save as.

Then you too can be witness to The Homophobia Experience. wink

Prince has earned the right to say whatever the fuck he wants. Let him abuse people in his lyrics, let him be ignorant, let him be sarcastic, let him have a dark sense of humour, let him be bitter, let him make fun of the weak! Boo-hoo.

If he were to talk like this in a serious discussion, we could get our panties in a twist. But the fact is, he's not a politician, he's a musician. And the great thing about being a musician is, you don't have to give a single fuck about what people think about you and about how people react to what you say.

The jam is funky, and I like it when Prince does a Clarkson and stirs up a bit of controversy. Brings a bit of colour into our boring, politically correct lives.

Bambi doesn't seem very judgemental. This - if the lyrics are as they seem (and I'm guessing they are) - does. It's the 'dirty' and the spitting neutral

I like the song. Feels very Prince as Prince.

Lyrics puzzles always are my favorite

And I did not interpret as having a go at lesbians at all.

hmmm hmmm

Does he really mean a girl, or a guy who looks like a girl???

And bearded girl reminded me of a girl who pretends to be girlfriend in order to cover up that mister is afraid to come out of the closet as gay.

Doe he mean dirty in a good way, like getting all sweaty and licking eachother everywhere and satisfying every body part that exist?

Or does he mean something ordain as the dirty world of mordern politics?

The bourgeoisie is the upper class being all content with themselves whilst leeching of the poor and middle class.

And yes he feels betrayed, but is it a romantic betrayel of is it the governmental betrayel that is dissapointing?

You know, the democrats or the republicans are all the samen, politicians getting rich at the cost of the people's health. It's just another puppet with a different wig in the administration.

Who is this song about?

For who did he write this song?

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

When he says "world", it doesn't sound like he's talking about a singular act...sounds more like he's talking about a lifestyle.

Exactly. Prince is also not one to be speaking down on CHEATING, lawd!

Is the "bearded girl" reference perhaps referring to the female decoy/lookalike in the Breakfast Can Wait video, namely the dance director/choreographer who appeared to be especially 'made up' to resemble "Andy Allo" impersonating Prince?

i'm turned off by the lyrics of this song too. They seem very judgmental. when he posted the title of the song on twitter i hoped that perhaps the song wasn't personal but reflected the views of "Da Bourgeoisie". Only prince can clarify what he meant but I doubt he does. He should know that only God can judge and I tweeted that to him this morning. The song can have various meanings so at least it has sparked discussion. maybe that was the point who knows

I guess by looking in the mirror that i should be offended by the outtake "Work that fat" since we are taking his lyrics so seriously.

Regardless of whether or not you find the lyrics to be offensive (I'm not offended, per se, because nothing really offends me, but I do find much of them distasteful, juvenile, and ignorant), please understand that nobody has an issue with this song because it's about a woman whom he has eyes on preferring another woman.

The issue is the numerous degrading comments he makes towards women who prefer women. Huge difference.

Did't that song have something to do with Rosie leaving the band? I've heard that several times, but I don't know if it's accurate or not.

Either way, lyrics have meaning and people can certainly choose to take them seriously.

If this song had been written by a white man, and it was about a white woman who left him for a black man, and the song was riddled with silly, ignorant stereotypes and racist comments ... most people would find that distasteful. This is no different.

Being a Prince fan really drives the point home for me that I'd never want to be famous. People are so quick to judge you and assume the worst about you. It's really disgusting and somewhat frightening.

I agree with others who think the song is about feeling betrayed/played after being cheated on. The references to a "bearded lady" and a "dirty world" sound like he is talking about a "freak" in the sense of a promiscuous woman who has no sense of what it is to be faithful -- she'll sleep with anyone and everyone. Also, a "beard" could be a metaphor for the idea that the woman was "disgusing" her true self around him -- pretending to be faithful, while sneaking around behind his back.

Are the lyrics bitter? You bet they are. I know that if I had a girlfriend and found out she was cheating on me, my reaction (at least initially) would be harsh and spiteful. I think that's human nature.

luvparade

Since checking checking this site for a while I've noticed many discussions of song lyrics these last few years and how people don't get it or understand what he is talking about. Usually, I just think whatever I think it's about and go with it regardless of what others say. It's about how the music makes you feel right? For the longest time I didn't know half of the real lyrics to Prince's songs. I didn't know they was some sort of dirty insinuations etc, I just loved hearing his music. So when people would make remarks about Prince being a sex addict or whatever I'd laugh since for me it was always the music that brought me in. Lots of lyrics and other things went way over my head. The point I'm trying to make is that sometimes what looks like something to someone, might not really be their intent or what's actually happening. Check further, please don't assume.

For some reason the lyrics to this funky song didn't agree with me the for the first few listens. Well some do, a little here and there. When I first heard it, before I read the lyrics, it did come across as judgemental because of what I thought I was hearing. I wasn't sure if it was about a lesbian, something else, or if it was an assumption of someone betraying him.

Actually when I heard 'dirty world' it made me think about what someone said about me dancing once. I didn't know that the JW's disapproved of dancing .....or maybe it's just some type of dancing...like I was doing. Hearing Prince play live made me dance to what I thought was the beat, or at least the beat that I heard. I couldn't figure out why everyone else wasn't going crazy like me, how anyone could just stand there. Then I overheard some ladies talking in disgust about 'dirty dancing' as I walked by. So hearing dirty in today's song made me think that something different like dancing or something other than being a lesbian could be the subject.

If anyone thinks dancing is dirty please don't presume it is a calculated science. People move in strange and different ways and one person's 'dirty' is another person's expression of a beautiful listening experience. A suggestive move to you might really only be a reaction to a funky cord or guitar riff to someone else. I just hope that Prince would never assume that anything was dirty before knowing exactly what was going on. Sometimes I think he makes lyrics out of ideas or something he sees, not necessarily something that is really happening or that he knows for a fact. Unless he tells us we might never know. I don't think he'd call anyone dirty because of their sexual orientation. But I don't know and I don't want to assume but I really don't think that he'd make lesbians the subject of a song at this point.

Usually there's enough discription in his songs that I can be satisfied I know what he is talking about. This one I'm not sure of, I like the sound but the flow of the song seems interrupted. Maybe he's not really be sure of something that's happened and is assuming causing static.
