Being a Prince fan really drives the point home for me that I'd never want to be famous. People are so quick to judge you and assume the worst about you. It's really disgusting and somewhat frightening.

I agree with others who think the song is about feeling betrayed/played after being cheated on. The references to a "bearded lady" and a "dirty world" sound like he is talking about a "freak" in the sense of a promiscuous woman who has no sense of what it is to be faithful -- she'll sleep with anyone and everyone. Also, a "beard" could be a metaphor for the idea that the woman was "disgusing" her true self around him -- pretending to be faithful, while sneaking around behind his back.

Are the lyrics bitter? You bet they are. I know that if I had a girlfriend and found out she was cheating on me, my reaction (at least initially) would be harsh and spiteful. I think that's human nature.

these explanations are killing me lol this is looking more and more like the imdb forums

/

sometimes what it sounds like is what it actually is.

/

whenever anyone complains that prince's lyrics these days are like a 13 year old's, there

are people yelling "it's just a pop song, what do you want from prince" blablabla.

/

now he tosses out this 'off the cuff' joint and all of a sudden we're supposed to open our

minds and read between the lines, because clearly prince is using clever metaphores on

us.

falloff

prince can be a dick, we all know that. this song is proof of that. if you have to clear up

the song title and mention that it's "not prejudicial", within 2 hours of it's release, you're going to have to rethink your lyrics, no? or perhaps just admit that you're trying to stuff

a year's worth of doorbanging into a 3 minute ditty, just to cover your bases.

/

literary analyses by those who could prattle over an hour about a man eating an orange,

as if that was somehow correllating to moby dick and melville's penis envy, what remains

is a lyric that any casual listener will interpret as spiteful, childish and ignorant.

/

so instead of a press release about a new album, we got another mud slinger for our mid

november appetites.

yay!

Agree withh the bolded parts...

^^ as to those bolded parts -
It's not unusual that a prince song title or lyric is not actually what it sounds like, or what the casual listener thinks it is. IIWYG, P Control, Sexy MF.
He's weird - most people wouldn't want to bring ire or disgust upon themselves by titling a song like that and having people/casual listeners bash him. We should know this by now - he's weird, likes to shock, and doesn't care about popular or casual opinion.

As to the unbolded parts by isten, I don't know what his point is, except to imply that other posters are feeble-minded and silly compared to him - pretty typical on the org, and the Internet in general where people can put down complete strangers from the anonymity of a computer.

Lyrically it's okay, his vocal execution is great, but overall the song is just another inconsequential effort.

All right--now I've listened again. I enjoy the music, haven't actually worked out what all of the lyrics mean... I'm holding off on judging, for now. I'll probably continue to enjoy the music and performance--but there are songs where the lyrics keep me from ever enjoying them fully. (I'm actually confused by comments that say setting the lyrics aside, what do you think about the song?--unless the thing's an instrumental, I can't set the lyrics aside, at least not for a song in my own language. Even in a language I don't know, I'm constantly wondering how things work out, and try to get some idea of how the lyric works. Even in literally nonsense lyrics).

What's the "snatching little wigs" line? The lyrics given earlier don't seem to match up there.

I do like the feel of this track--and I think the "My Medallion" comparisons are apt. Always liked that one, too.

Appart from the lyrics to this song I've loved this year to be honest. I've loved the music and the random distribution but as always horses for courses and I can understand the wish for a definitive statement of creativity like an album or DVD

I'm not trying to hate on nothing, I still feel positive about his playing his vocal delivery and even the random means of distrubition

Its just these lyrics do not sit well and they have at best ambiguously negative connotations

Understand I'm not calling Prince Homophobic i'm just saying that he's used at best ambiguously negative connotations

Of all people that should understand that language surrounding minority groups can be loaded it's Prince, Less we forget the history lesson on the seemingly innocent names given to decendents of former slaves in the song Family Names, Or for that fact any number of deconstructions of language surrounding race he has talked about in the last 17 years.

I take on board when somebody from a minority expresses that language has a diffrent connatation to them he should do the same.

Perfect....I agree

I agree. Prince has had a fascination with lesbians for years. Bambi, Loveleft Loveright, The One, Wendy and Lisa in the Revolution. He wants what he can't have. It seems to intrigue him. I think the song shows bitterness towards a cheating woman who he knows he can't truly have. He stated that the song is not prejudicial. The lyrics may not be overly sensitive but I don't believe they are homophobic. Besides, the groove is funky and addictive. I love it!
