i think releasing these singles and live snips all the times kills the excitement a bit
he has released many many new cds that i was excited for even tho they ended up sucking
i was still happy to pay and check it out
now with these singles i just get disappointed over and over more frequently to the point where i could care less what is next
had he put these on a cd i would have excited bought it... enjoyed digesting it for a few weeks .. called it poo and hoped he did better next year ..
now the dissappointment is just constant and does not even give us a break to anticipate another cd even if it is gonnna suck too
the fact is prince has a better shot at releasing a thematic cd than trying to find a hit amongst the drivel
perhaps we would hate the 3rd eye girl less if we judged the project as a whole experiment rather than each song as a potential next hit single that does not even come close

It's a fantasy that performers/artits can "excite" and "thrill" for decades and decades. Even certified geniuses like Beethoven went through periods were they seen as yesterday's news, where they were criticized (justifiably) for their poor manners and lack of fairness and generally treated like has beens.
Prince is one of the few greats that still truly can kill in concert -- just for that, he's fun compared to other icons. His Billboard Award performance was a triumph, a truly magistral moment. Of course, right now we're jaded and we don't see that, but in 20 years, it will be unmistakable.
What makes him extra interesting is that he is a musical divo. While still self-indulgent, he can get down to elemental ground with left-field ideas like TRC, artful revisitation of his classic sounds like Musicology and 3121 and fully reloaded stuff like 3EG.
So he hasn't charted in a long time -- it would be nice if there were new Prince songs everyone seems to know, but he's not playing the industry game much so he's being a divo and making money with his live shows instead of being a fully marketed pop star.
I've played a lot of Mozart, Bach and Beethoven, and if you think they never penned something boring and well beneath their creative peaks, think again.
One day, Prince will probably be back on the charts, but the days where I needed that to validate my passion for his music are long gone.
We're only in it for the music.

I'd almost kill for remasters of the WB material, and I'll always be happy to pick up a copy of a new Prince album, but I'm just too old to be running around the backyard looking under every bush for the latest R&RLA or Screwdriver. There's far too much good music in the world for me to jump through hoops. It's kind of insulting.

Funny - I was thinking about this the other day. I guess us old school fans, the ones that were teenagers in the 80s and remember the excitement of new Prince releases I just having trouble handling the Prince of the 21st century.
We know Prince isn't a conformist, never has been. I'm 44 now and I can't be arsed with trawling the net for new snippets/leaks/rehearsals. If I was 14, maybe I would.
In my opinion, it's more of a frustration some of the older fans feel, because they know Prince could drop a top 10 album tomorrow, but at the moment he just doesn't want to.
Someone posted a thread the other day saying Prince was irrelevant and got slated for it. To us, he'lll never be irrelevant because we still visit this forum, but I understand what the poster was trying to say and what robertgeorgeakabob is saying about feeling like he's in some kind of cult.
Hang in there nursev, you've been aroung long enough. I know how you feel. You just want a strong lead single release followed by an album and to see your musical hero back on MTV. Can't help thinking that aint gonna happen
Prince has been frustrating us for years. Anyone in the UK who had a ticket for the SOTT or Diamonds & Pearls gigs knows what I'm talking about. Both cancelled with days to spare.
But we're still here. What does that tell you ? Little? Yeah, right. It might be little but it's loud

I must say that without any albums being released, it's kind of gone for me as well.
I still get exited about live TV performances, and the Jimmy Fallon show was AMAZING. Billboard show was pretty slammin' too.
But without a new body of work in the form of an album, there's just nothing to get exited about.
The singles are okay, but they're really just throw aways as most singles are.
Frankly, I think that Prince is actually intimidated by the greatness of 'Lotusflow3r', and also the heavy disappointment with his '20ten' plans that fell through. That was likely the catalyst and the point where he made up his mind not to release any more albums.

What I see as part of the problem is the impression he creates that he doesn't believe in his new music himself. After The Rainbow Children, there wasn't a single tour, or even single concert, that supported the new album. Today, there isn't even an album to support. It makes people getting a bit put-off by yet another puffed-up hype as now there is indeed nothing the hype refers to.
And exactly on the occasion where he can establish his new material, you get a vegas-like best-off show. Yes he is a great performer, and I do like some of the older stuff live but at this point the balance (to me) is at the wrong end of the spectrum. The live shows have started to look like cash machines. Montreux 2009 was a nice example on how things could be if he approached things a bit differently.
Something that supports the live show as a money maker is the fact that he hasn't spent or allowed to spend, any effort in revigorating his older albums, live material etc. He got so allergic to the Warner years that even the thought of them making some money out of it makes him bury his heels in the sand. Never mind how awesome it would be to have his legacy updated, added to and placed into context.
We get live streaming but he should realise that most of his fanbase now has jobs and kids and can't be sitting around the pc all night for a hopefull glimpse of Prince live.
Supporting concerts of his backing vocalists? Well they're talented people but as his appearance is not exactly guranteed, who will pay prince ticket prices with a high chance of a no-show and seeing people who will still need to prove their worth as solo-artists.
In a sens there's a lot going on, but it all seems to be in the wrong area.
The quality of new music wavers. New music is not supported, what enchances the previous point. The legacy is not cherished unless as a live sing-along for the masses Marketing, as usual, is just a shot-in-the-dark effort, always one-off and frustrating for a large part of the fan population because the scope is ridiculously narrow for a wordlwide known musician. If you happen to be in the wrong part of the world, you better start a search on ebay for the one-day-newspaper release.
I know it's a "beating a dead horse" moment again, but now more then ever, prince's actions are "much ado about nothing" and he's neglecting his opportunities.

I cannot most of it sucks ass. Have you read the thread on here about the decline in music sales this year being the worst since Soundscan started in 1991. I am not the only one who does not care for the music of today. [Edited 8/5/13 7:51am]

Like many here I'm too old and have too little free time to scour the net looking for Prince's next online outlet or sitting by my computer all night hoping he shows up at Livestream. I keep up to date by coming here every day and looking for threads by fans that share what they found by promoting it to the rest of us. Once I have the info I know where to go to buy tracks or listen to streams. When the streams are no longer available I plug the information shared into a search engine and find a bootleg copy. If it were not for other fans work promoting it, I wouldn't even know what was out there. If it wasn't for other fans capturing and sharing the material, I would never hear it. In other words, I would have nothing to keep me interested in Prince's career. I would be mostly unaware of it. So thanks to the Prince fans who promote Prince's new stuff and to those that share it!!! The idea that what they or I am doing is somehow bad and harmful to Prince is simply ludicrous. In my not-so-humble opinion...

^Most of us will agree that he still kicks ass onstage. But how many times does he play in your town (wherever that is)? Last time I saw him was in Holland 2 years ago and no matter how good it was, a concert can't keep you excited for two years. So I understand the "feeling is gone" sentiment, but also the "just listen to something else" sentiment. Anybody here into Ethiopian music?

Wise words found here, for sure.
I've checked out some Ethiopian music, but I really LOVE Ethiopian food. I lived in D.C. for years, and there are three Ethiopian restaurants in Adam's Morgan alone!
I also dated an Ethiopian woman... gorgeous. "He's a musician's musician..."

it's true, i don't get excited anymore. i have stopped tuning into the 3rdeye live stream stuff, and when i see soemthing new posted i pretty much ignore it for the most part. if he comes back to my area for a concert, i'm not even sure i'd go this time? i've just lost most of my interest in his new music that he's done lately, i don't care for any of it. be kind, be a friend, not a bully.

I'm now 47 years old. I got on board the Prince Express a while ago, loved Prince with a passion through most of the 80s and 90s, and then... "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" was released. It didn't appeal to me at all. And then "The Rainbow Children" landed. And "N.E.W.S." Since then, each new album or song or what have you has left me less and less interested, especially the new 3rd Eye Girl stuff. And I realized that Prince and I weren't seeing eye to eye anymore. - "The Rainbow Children", in particular, really made me realize that my fanhood was diminishing. Or maybe not that my stance as a fan was waning, but I realized that Prince was going in a direction that didn't appeal to me personally. For a while, that really bummed me out. I was convinced that I needed to keep loving every single thing he put out. But I eventually made peace with the fact that things change. Prince changed. I changed. My life changed. His life changed. Nothing lasts forever. All that stuff. - I still have gobs and gobs of fantastic music from him that I can listen to whenever I like... studio albums, demos, live shows, you name it. And I'm discovering new bands all the time, so it's not like I'm hurting for entertainment. - I don't "hate" him or anything like that. We're just no longer on the same page. And yes, it's a little bit sad that I'll probably never again have that electric "new Prince thrill" to look forward to, like the first time I listened to "Sign 'O' The Times" from start to finish. But I *had* it, and that's a great thing to remember.
