I cannot most of it sucks ass. Have you read the thread on here about the decline in music sales this year being the worst since Soundscan started in 1991. I am not the only one who does not care for the music of today.

[Edited 8/5/13 7:51am]

How much recent music have you heard though? Good music doesn't need huge sales to endorse it.

I try to listen to recent music all of the time and it is just not a lot of good stuff but I am always open to recommendations

I'm now 47 years old. I got on board the Prince Express a while ago, loved Prince with a passion through most of the 80s and 90s, and then... "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" was released. It didn't appeal to me at all. And then "The Rainbow Children" landed. And "N.E.W.S." Since then, each new album or song or what have you has left me less and less interested, especially the new 3rd Eye Girl stuff. And I realized that Prince and I weren't seeing eye to eye anymore.

-

"The Rainbow Children", in particular, really made me realize that my fanhood was diminishing. Or maybe not that my stance as a fan was waning, but I realized that Prince was going in a direction that didn't appeal to me personally. For a while, that really bummed me out. I was convinced that I needed to keep loving every single thing he put out. But I eventually made peace with the fact that things change. Prince changed. I changed. My life changed. His life changed. Nothing lasts forever. All that stuff.

-

I still have gobs and gobs of fantastic music from him that I can listen to whenever I like... studio albums, demos, live shows, you name it. And I'm discovering new bands all the time, so it's not like I'm hurting for entertainment.

-

I don't "hate" him or anything like that. We're just no longer on the same page. And yes, it's a little bit sad that I'll probably never again have that electric "new Prince thrill" to look forward to, like the first time I listened to "Sign 'O' The Times" from start to finish. But I *had* it, and that's a great thing to remember.

If some of the other dissatisfied fans could adopt that attitude they'd be more at peace with their situations.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

^ Nice post, I feel the same, except my "bad album experience" began with Emancipation, and then continued with NPS, Rave etc... and except I like some of the stuff on TRC.

And, I like the end of your post, the 80s really was an exciting era.. (several eras to be exact), and we are probably never gonna see or hear that kind of music again.

the 3eg stuff shows that Prince doesn't have it in him anymore, the vibe that he used to.

MadamGoodnight

As far as P's music goes, I have found *something* that I loved on every release. Every single one.

Recent music, Breakfast Can Wait is still my fave. Played it today. I have seen P six times in the last 2 years or so. Always entertaining. Nobody is touching him live IMO, they're just not. The man pulls out The Dance Electric and I get that feeling all over again. It's not ever going to leave. He will always be my number one artist. He has so many gems, released, & unreleased. I wish he would've kept some of his protege's songs/music for himself. He gave away some good music, and they didn't have the vocals to carry them.

Now, the other side of it. As far as these new proteges go, I'm not into them. Yes, I did give it a shot, not my cup of tea. If Superconductor Reloaded is an instrumental of just P's music, maybe I'd get it. Otherwise, no. The sitch with Serpan, I would feel the same way if it happened to Dr. F, or even Jester. That's just me.

One of the great things about that "classic Prince era" is that I entered college a couple of months after "Purple Rain" was released, and I graduated right before "Batman" came out. So most of my awesome Prince moments are inextricably wed with a wonderfully magical thrilling period of my life. The best of both worlds!

I feel the same way.It was in the late- 90s when I finally realized that,it's OK to not like everything that Prince releases.I realized that I didn't need to buy every new album.I can forever enjoy the music that I do like (which is most of his 80s material).I think that TGE was truly the last brilliant album that he made, but I'm not mad, angry or pissed at him...lol...it's how life is.People change, they move on,they go in different directions.

What's funny is that "Prince's mounds of egotistical, self indulgent, control freakish bullshit" is what gave us the 80's and 90's music everyone here considers legendary. He basically wrote everything, renamed people on a whim, told them what to wear and how to sing the songs, he built a studio in the middle of nowhere and said he was going to do things his way. The only thing about then and now that's different is that all of these complaining fans are old now(by their own testimony). Prince hasn't changed one bit in his ways.

The last time i felt a massive amount of hype and excitement was 2009's LotusFlow3r build up and day of release. It was mostly justified too with the fantastic musicianship and versatility on show (despite what you may think of the actual songs) and the title CD was almost an entire return to form. The post release treatment, bar the 3 shows in 1 night promotion (which was bold and innovative), was almost disastrous and ruined what could of been a massive era.

.

Since then it has dwindled massively thanks to his contradictive and confusing business plans and spotty music. The protege concentration (as good as Superconductor may be) should never have been pushed to the forefront of his careerand the latest, 3rdEyeGirl, is shaping up to be a huge let down as almost all songs heard from them thus far have been lacking and sometimes embarrassing (L.O.L.).

.

The songs released randomly with no home like R&RLA, Screwdriver, the 3rdEyeGirl tracks like FixUrLifeUp and then the website demos have just confused listeners. Has he returned? Is an album due?

During my time at HMV (UK), many customers asked for the latest Prince album after hearing R&RLA on heavy radio rotation (yet the video was mostly missed) and after discovering there isn't one, asked for the single CD instead....nope, online only.

.

It's eventually come to this...."oh a new Prince track on his 3rd website of the year? I'll get it at a later date". I have NEVER reacted this way towards new Prince. He's doing it to himself.

.

I'm not fussed at all about a 3rdEyeGirl album and won't be buying. Superconductor RELOADED i'll simply download the extra tracks. It's not what we signed up for. I'm not into Prince to listen to his latest young-enough-to-be-your-daughter crush! Hip me to them, sure...just don't put them at the front. We just don't care that much. We are Prince fans.

.

What needs to happen is for Prince to get back to reality, stop being arrogantly stubborn (the 80's was 30 years ago!), end your mid-life crisis, drop the young girls and accept your age....then announce a new, fresh, mature, musically innovative/experimental album to succeed The Rainbow Children. An artistic statement.

Follow this with a world tour anouncement and a few music videos and i'll be back on the purple hype train and i bet many others concur. Anything remotely similar to this will have me excited again.

An announcement of a 3rdEyeGirl album treated as if it were his own will distance me further from the excitement.

.

2013 was BIG.....on let downs (thus far).

Nicely said and all true. Good point about the protegee projects being placed in the forefront like all his fans are just gonna go out n buy them just cuz they're associated with Prince. I stopped doing that after Rosie Gaines. All these weekly releases are really just making me more n more uninterested. Great post!

In direct relation to this thread, as to not be moved into Non-Prince: I've listened to Radiohead since they came out. Their first 3 albums (to me) were outstanding. Their 4th album - Kid A - went in a completely new direction (an ambient, techno sound). Since then, aside from 1 album, they have settled into the techno sound as "their sound". Even the lead singer's side projects are the same. My point: they alienated fans of the first few albums by going in a new direction. And, their new albums keep getting critical praise, while all sounding the same! Artists change, and that's cool, but throughout the journey they have to treat the fans right. Without fans, they'd make no money. confused [Edited 8/4/13 6:31am]

The "old" statement comes from orgers posting "I'm too old to track down Prince's music", "I have kids and a mortgage now and can't be arsed...", etc. Yeah Prince is old too but if that's a fans only issue with him it's really easy to remedy. Also I've met "old" Prince fans who still enjoy him just as much as when they were teens or in their twenties. If you don't like the new music than that's pretty easy to state. The OP has made it known on this site that she doesn't follow too man(if any) proteges and doesn't have or has heard most of the unreleased material over the years. When I suggested she check some of this stuff out(since for her it would be fresh and new), no response at all. The second I responded to someone else with regards to age, lo and behold a response. As I told her sorry if I touched a nerve.

So by noting that he hasn't changed but his fans have I'm now defending him. I'm sorry if you took offense to me referring to some fans as "old". I guess I hit too close to home on that one. If you can't handle a response to someone else post then ring for the nurse and have her up your dosage! NEXT!!!!!!!

I am the nurse bitch now u remember that the next time u wanna insult people. Please stop fucking with folks who state an honest opinion about prince that u dont like. U dont see me constantly harassing u like u do to me. The shit is not cute Honestman!

Did you even read my earlier response to you directly? About checking out the unreleased tracks, bootlegs and some of the protege work you've yet to hear. Obviously not, you seemed more focused on my response to someone elses post(which would be me harassing them not you) and which they seemed to have taken in stride.

Also I never cursed at you either but that's cool if that's how you need to express yourself.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Prince is in an exciting time in his career. Revitalized and kicking ass. Ask Rollingstone Magazine.

This is the least stagnant he has been for a while. I believe someone called it panning for gold.

If you aren't excited about Prince, that's your problem. Maybe you aren't a big fan anymore. That's okay.

Had to peek in here to see why the heck this thread was still "hot", I see that Skywalker summed it up, but might i add, it's wrongly titled for starters, should read, MY days of being excited about Prince are gone. That would've let to one post and done! K.I.M. (keep it moving)

Good point about the protegee projects being placed in the forefront like all his fans are just gonna go out n buy them just cuz they're associated with Prince. I stopped doing that after Rosie Gaines. All these weekly releases are really just making me more n more uninterested. Great post!

You got that far? lol The last protege act I bought was the cd single of Ingrid's 'Elephant Box'. Well, except for Bria, but that couldn't really be avoided (and I still have yet to listen to it)...

Pretty sure I stopped with the 80's artists/groups as far as the protege's go. I agree. Some people assume that everyone here is a completist, and will get anyone attached to Prince's name. I won't. I follow him. I do that for his voice, and his talent. These other people play in the back, but they are not him. I am not interested in them on their own as his protege's. Tried it, and I'm passing on it.

I haven't felt anything for his music since Lotus Flower. This latest incarnation definately lacks that spark. It used to be when there was a track like "Big City" & "The Breakdown" being leaked I'd drop everything to find it, now I don't even bother because I'll just be disappointed. The ONA tour was the last time I think he was truly inspired & had "real musicians" around him. At least I can say I was around for that.
