I have to agree with the thread headline

I come on here most days to see if there is a new album with a theme running through it but all we get is odd tracks here and there. Has he lost his mojo?

Lets hope before this year ends he puts out an album that puts him and his music back on the map and at the forefront of music again.

Another Sign O The Times would be nice

Who remembers in the 80s,on the night before a new Prince album was released, you weren't able to sleep? You would toss and turn all night, and you couldn't wait to rush to the wrecka stow in the morning lol

We won't ever experience that again, but I think there a few ways that Prince could create a little excitement amongst his fanbase....

1) Remasters----I know I'm beating a dead horse here (lol),but wouldn't it be great if Prince (with Warner's help) did a kickass remastering of his catalog? I'm talking bonus tracks, outtakes, rare photos,commentary.....the whole 9 yards! His fanbase would be losing their minds!

2) Release new music the right way---No more random "singles" that are thrown out there with no strategy or purpose.Make a kickass album, announce a release date, and follow through with it! Release it everywhere, make it easy to obtain.Get rid of that 3rdEyeGirl band and do an amazing album on your own!!

3) Do something special for the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain---The possibilities are endless! A Revolution reunion tour?? A re-release of the movie in theatres? A 2-CD Purple Rain Deluxe Edition/30th Anniversary set?? Or all of the above?! There is absolutely no reason why a career milestone like Purple Rain shouldn't be celebrated in a big way.

The Prince of today seems to be creating a cult of fans. The dialogue between 3rd eye and Serpan was creepy, had the passive-aggressive tones of a Scientologist.
If that wasn't Prince speaking he's sure training them well.
I will never lose excitement for his 80s output. For that alone I feel indebted to the man. It's been the soundtrack to my life since I was a nipper.
I don't hate him or his music now, I'm just totally disinterested.
I come here to talk about the stuff I like. I try not to rain on anybody's parade regarding music taste unless they talk pure shite, and are pompous about it.

For me, one of the reasons his music doesn't stay with me is because there's no humility whatsoever.

U need to fix UR life up. Ain't gonna miss U. No more candy 4 U. I'm pretty sure when he covered "Creep", didn't he rework the lyrics so the girl was at fault? Etc etc.

When you first hear songs like this, the first reaction is "Yeah, right on Prince", but something inside you registers that something is uncomfortable or unpleasant. Might take a little while, but it happens. The beats and guitar work only go so far.

His message used to be one of "everyone's welcome" but now it's a weird cult.

I still buy his work but only to not miss out on true gems that are sprinkled here and there.

This forum complains incessantly. If you're so disheartened about Prince, sell all your purple stuff and move on with life. If your that bothered by it, why complain here, find a new hobby.

I enjoy all the Prince history that people with The Org have, but this constant whining is damn near unbearable.

In all seriousness from posts you've made in the past I can gather that you don't listen to protege projects and don't have a vast collection of bootleg tracks(if any at all). I'd be bored by now too. You've limited yourself to official Prince only output which is few and far between now. The 3EG downloads and leaks have been the most music we've gotten in 3 years(and at a great price). Also though you're not trying to hear that shit Superconductor was/is on point. Open up a bit and find out what you've been missing.

In direct relation to this thread, as to not be moved into Non-Prince:

I've listened to Radiohead since they came out. Their first 3 albums (to me) were outstanding. Their 4th album - Kid A - went in a completely new direction (an ambient, techno sound). Since then, aside from 1 album, they have settled into the techno sound as "their sound". Even the lead singer's side projects are the same.

My point: they alienated fans of the first few albums by going in a new direction. And, their new albums keep getting critical praise, while all sounding the same!

Artists change, and that's cool, but throughout the journey they have to treat the fans right. Without fans, they'd make no money.

I was thinking about this too, and I agree 1,100%!!!

The way he does shit though sometimes makes me think he's got something BIG up his sleeve. I'm sure most of us have hgeard about the "six year plan" he had culminating with "Purple Rain". Well I'd LIKE to think he's got another plan hatching. But then he just goes left field with shit, and makes it so hard to 1. get his shit 2. defend him and 3. not get the fond memories I have from my childhood tainted with this new person's dictorial bullshit.

I have made zero effort to hear his new music, mostly because with every release he's making the WB days look like a fluke, but mostly because of all the BS he expouts.

I try very hard to separate the artist from the asshole, but dude is blurring those lines with every turn. Sad really. sad

I don't believe he has anything like another plan in the works, but I think that's because the way the music is delivered these days, so it's next-to-impossible to craft any kind of plan.

Prince has probably known for well over a decade that no matter what kind of songs he creates, they aren't getting played on any of today's radio stations unless it's sparse airplay on an adult contemporary format. He certainly isn't going to get new stuff played on pop or rock stations, and therefore he has no chance of charting on the pop charts. So it follows that using traditional methods, he also has little chance of huge album sales.

Give Prince credit - he has tried every way imaginable to get new music and new albums out there. He's put them in newspapers; he's put them in books; he's made exclusive deals with Target; he's created websites; he's run contests at Starbucks; etc. Whether it's album quality or just not having found the right distribution method, he hasn't had success at album sales for a very long time.

But you can't say he hasn't tried, and tried hard in that regard.

One area where I think Prince has dropped the ball with regard to getting albums sold is the way he tours. Let's look at Bruce Springsteen's business model. Springsteen is an artist older than Prince; who hit the same early career heights as Prince; and who plays a genre of music that, like Prince's, isn't going to be played on the radio.

(Note: Bruce has his own station on Sirius/XM, so his new songs ARE played there. But that audience is nowhere near large enough to chart anything Bruce plays. But it is a good idea Prince, if you are listening!)

Despite that, Springsteen's new albums still sell millions. They go multi-platinum world-wide. I can't find the sales for his latest album, "Wrecking Ball", but the two before it ("Magic" and "Working on a Dream") have so far sold more than 3 million and 4 million copies respectively.

As a fan of both these artist for more than 30 years, I will unbiasedly say that I don't think the last three Springsteen albums are as good as the last three Prince albums. Not just head-to-head, either. I mean, over their last three albums, Prince has come closer to songs of "Purple Rain/Sign O' The Times" quality than Bruce has come to "Born to Run/Born in the USA" quality-level songs. IMO, Prince has come a LOT closer to prior greatness than Bruce.

And yet, Bruce's albums sell, and Prince's don't. I think I know at least one reason why.

Touring.

Bruce tours far more than Prince but more importantly, Bruce tours his current album. He plays at least half of whatever his current album is at every single show and he makes sure the audience knows what they're hearing and where they can get it. In fact, every tour is NAMED after the new album. Bruce just finished the "Wrecking Ball" tour. Before that, he was playing the "Magic" tour and the "Working on a Dream" tour.

Prince names his tours after things other than his current album. And then, Prince plays little or no songs from whatever his latest album is. If there's one complaint that is pretty much universal among Prince fans, it's that he records awesome songs and then rarely or never plays them live.

Bruce records fair-to-good songs, but plays them EVERY SINGLE SHOW. And even songs that aren't note-worthy can be made to sound awesome live. So Springsteen concert-goers all over the world are exposed to new music in an exciting setting, over and over and over.

And that's why Bruce can sell 4,400,000 copies of "Magic" despite the fact that none of the songs ever get played on the radio.

The last time i felt a massive amount of hype and excitement was 2009's LotusFlow3r build up and day of release. It was mostly justified too with the fantastic musicianship and versatility on show (despite what you may think of the actual songs) and the title CD was almost an entire return to form. The post release treatment, bar the 3 shows in 1 night promotion (which was bold and innovative), was almost disastrous and ruined what could of been a massive era.

.

Since then it has dwindled massively thanks to his contradictive and confusing business plans and spotty music. The protege concentration (as good as Superconductor may be) should never have been pushed to the forefront of his careerand the latest, 3rdEyeGirl, is shaping up to be a huge let down as almost all songs heard from them thus far have been lacking and sometimes embarrassing (L.O.L.).

.

The songs released randomly with no home like R&RLA, Screwdriver, the 3rdEyeGirl tracks like FixUrLifeUp and then the website demos have just confused listeners. Has he returned? Is an album due?

During my time at HMV (UK), many customers asked for the latest Prince album after hearing R&RLA on heavy radio rotation (yet the video was mostly missed) and after discovering there isn't one, asked for the single CD instead....nope, online only.

.

It's eventually come to this...."oh a new Prince track on his 3rd website of the year? I'll get it at a later date". I have NEVER reacted this way towards new Prince. He's doing it to himself.

.

I'm not fussed at all about a 3rdEyeGirl album and won't be buying. Superconductor RELOADED i'll simply download the extra tracks. It's not what we signed up for. I'm not into Prince to listen to his latest young-enough-to-be-your-daughter crush! Hip me to them, sure...just don't put them at the front. We just don't care that much. We are Prince fans.

.

What needs to happen is for Prince to get back to reality, stop being arrogantly stubborn (the 80's was 30 years ago!), end your mid-life crisis, drop the young girls and accept your age....then announce a new, fresh, mature, musically innovative/experimental album to succeed The Rainbow Children. An artistic statement.

Follow this with a world tour anouncement and a few music videos and i'll be back on the purple hype train and i bet many others concur. Anything remotely similar to this will have me excited again.

An announcement of a 3rdEyeGirl album treated as if it were his own will distance me further from the excitement.

.

2013 was BIG.....on let downs (thus far).

I think Prince's main problem is that, there doesn't seem to be any structure to his career. There's no strategy in place. He throws new songs out there, randomly, which may or may not appear on a future album. His tours seem to be hastily arranged and announced really quickly. His last ablum wasn't even released in America.New songs aren't always easy to find. There are rumors of a new album called 'Plectum Electum' but nobody knows when,or if,it will be released.

Maybe he likes this type of chaos, but everything just seems to be an unorganized mess right now.Bruce Springsteen (and most other artists) simply release albums then go on tour to promote it.There's no confusion, endless speculation, chaos, etc.

I'm not saying there isn't hope. The frustration lay within what he's capable of versus what he actually does. I think we can all agree there's hope and belief he could still do it, he's the ultimate popular musician and entertainer of our time....it's just he chooses not to. Has been that way for awhile now (from a mostly studio work perspective).
