Is Prince 2013 better than The Time 2011?

This is one of the most exciting times in recent memory to be a Prince fan. The frequent new songs, teasers, video performances, concerts, etc.

However, what The Time/Original 7 did in 2011 with Condensate has not been matched by Prince thus far. Morris and the boys seem to always get the best of Prince.

Screwdriver, U Will Be, etc. are awesome. However, he has not released anything remotely close to Condensate since 3121. I love LotusFlower, MPLSound, Planet Earth, 20ten(not so much) and the new stuff, but none of those albums have anything on Condensate which is a classic.

He can take as much credit as he wants for The Time, but at the end of the day, he still struggles to bring it like Morris and the crew can bring it. He better stop holding back and release it.

It may be a little unfair to compare a mix of random songs to Condensate, a fully realized album. But as it is, Condensate on a whole is better than most of what I've heard from Prince in 2013.

I disagree about LotusFlower though. For me, it blows Condensate out of the water and 20ten is comparable to it, at the very least.

5 or 6 random b-sides thrown onto the internet are supposed to be compared to a full album?

Even so, they're still better than Condensate.

Let's be real. Condensate is good because Morris and the crew didn't stray far from the blueprint laid out for them on previous albums by Prince.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

LOL. Prince was The Time. But they evolved into their own creature by the mid-80s.

When was that? The 5 minutes after Purple Rain stopped filming? By 85 Morris was gone!

To tell you the truth, so far I'm unimpressed by both.
How many ThirdRateGirl songs do we have by now? The only one I'm DOWN with is done by Prince on his own.

I agree that it is debatable whether Condensate is better than 1. Planet Earth; 2. Lotus Flower; 3. 20ten(not really debatable) or 4. The 2013 releases.

I happen to be in the camp that Condensate is much better. It is one of those CD's that I have to try to not listen to so much because I don't want to wear it out. I also don't skip many, if any, songs on Condensate when I'm listening to it. I can't say that about any of the 4 compliations listed above.

Many of you feel otherwise and favor the Prince stuff, but the fact that we are having this debate is evidence that The Time was and still is a worthy rival of Prince. He can play Cool and Jungle Love all that he wants in concert, but we all know that he can never pull it off the way Morris and the boys can do it.

Even though I have enjoyed the new songs, and that Screwdriver remix is hot as all hell...I can honestly say I like Condensate more. I am still listening to that and the fDeluxe album on a consistant basis. I can't say that about most of Prince's recent stuff. Both have the Minneapolis sound but still sound new at the same time. That is the biggest thing I miss from Prince's stuff.

For me, Prince hasn't released one album since Musicology & 3121 that matches the energy and fun of Condensate.

Prince and The Time are apples n oranges in content.

The Time are usually striaght ahead rnb with rock flourishes.

Prince is balladry, rnb, rock, experimental, etc presented in a more abstract aesthetic.

Sort of like Van Halen compared to Radiohead.

Thats not saying that Condesnate was not a 10 (1-10, 10 being high) album. They hit every mark with that album, as if they went right from Pandemonium etc. Any fan of them should be proud of that album and I was hoping Prince heard that record too.

After thinking about it and still thinking Condensate is better than most of Prince's recent stuff, it does compare imo with Andy Allo's album which I think is the best thing Prince has produced since 3121. Now before the flames smoke my ass, hear me out. The reason I love Condensate so much is the sound is old and new at the same time...the songs are strong and hook filled...and just plain fun to listen to. there is no effort like "this might grow on me". It was instantly enjoyable and has remained so. I can definitely say, and I am PRETTY sure I am in the minority here, that Andy's album does the same. I still listen to it regularly and there was no effort.

Prince is better individually than any one member of The Time. The reason why The Time usually outperforms Prince is that it is 6 great musicians/performers/producers vs One very talented man. No one man can stand up to one of the greatest bands ever. All six of those dudes are tight.

The Time was Prince's greatest creation and biggest mistake. Condensate and the past six or so years of Prince is evidence of that.

Could it be that nobody had any real, high expectations for either Condensate or Andy Allo's album?

It's easier to love something if it's a pleasant surprise and you've lived without for so long, whereas when Prince releases and album, we all have a lot invested. For whatever bizarre reason. So it's easier to be let down by him.

As great as Condensate is... imagine a Prince album with similar qualities. I'm not interested in Prince trying to compete against them. If you put Jimmy and Terry in the studio with Prince, you will end up with Prince's best album since Purple Rain, if not ever. And while I'm dreaming let's get Tom Petty in the room too.
