Prince's Voice

Ok, I just read a reply on one thread that basically translated into if Prince had no guitar to play, he would be screwed. omg Are these people on crack? What do you mean he cannot sing? I hope I am not the only one who is infatuated with his voice, wheter it is in the falsetto, or in his "lower tones". His voice is incredible, and there is not another voice out there, to this day, that sounds like Prince. Please tell me I am not alone in thinking Prince is not only a great musician, but a great singer! What do you guys think?

I melt every time I hear "Scandalous" when he goes from the falsetto to the deep "Baby" bit...

Prince's voice is unique. He is not a "pure" singer, but a pure singer is someone who might have a great tone or whatever but no soul. Prince uses is voice just as he uses his various "real instuments" he is willing to try do any and everything with it. It's dramatic. It's a skill that great actors have. The abilty to inhabit entirely different characters. Prince is a mimic. That's why his voice can be streached so many ways. He loves to use that voice to create characters that fit within the context of different genres of music he creates. Without that streaching ability he wouldn't be able to creditably jump between genres. It one thing write a certain type of song (pop, funk, rap) and another to be able to carry it out in the physical.

Phil

Prince has the one of the most versatile and one of the most expressive voices in the history of popular and contemporary music.

This is undisputable.

Most of the people who bought the Purple Rain album probably weren't even aware he wrote most of it and could play most of the parts, especially as a lot of it was a live recording.

As a songwriter and arranger alone he could have had significant recognition, even if he could not sing.

What a ridiculous statement.

The fact that he can sing, dance, play, write, produce, arrange, makes him Prince though.

and my favourite artist smile
