"Cat, we need you to rap!" The most tragic words in a Prince song. No. No, we don't. That's okay, Cat. You can sit down. Every time I hear that part I wish that somehow Cat would just say, "No thanks, Prince. I'll sit this one out." "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I concur.
Also the dreaded words "Doug" "E" and "Fresh" send a chill down the spine.

I was never a fan of Cat's but I disagree. You have to take the entire album the way it is- and it is genuis imo.

Oh c'mon give me a break
This album, this song, this rap by Cat are now classic material in the vein of 1999, When Doves Cry or Kiss: it brought dozens of us here an intense joy, listening to it again and again for years and still rediscovering it once in a while with the same old lusty pleasure.
So what u want me to tell u? I respect that u don't like it but I ain't gonna bitch about it... A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Do you like the other one from Cindy C.? I think it was going to be a part of Positivity but not included(?)

I've never really understood the camp of fans who think of Lovesexy as some sort of brilliant artistic statement which changed their lives. It's not a bad album but it's nowhere near as good as the previous ones. The songs just didn't sound all that developed, too much emphasis on arrangements and too little on the songs. Anna Stesia was great, the synth interlude was nice, Dance on and Positivity were good. A good album, just not great like his other work.

I think the rap is awesome on Alphabet St. The best part of the song, and the reason the song didn't really get popular is because it wasn't in the radio edit. It totally plays into that "Sesame Street", alphabet-reciting, little- girls-doing-hopscotch-on-the-sidewalk, mood of childlike energy that is what Lovesexy was all about. It's a shame they didn't put in the video which had an "Electric Company"/70's "Sesame St" style anyway.

The rest of us never understood why you guys didn't get Lovesexy. After Emancipation, he never approached the heights of Lovesexy. No, it's not his best - and suffers from being the follow-up to his best, but it is great. But I don't have to take the entire album the way it is because I usually edit out the excess. And there's a lot of excess on Prince albums (genius or not, he REALLY needed a producer to edit out the cringey moments).
Speaking of which, almost every attempt at rap by Prince or one of the countless talentless muses and/or dancers he's had have been cringe-inducing. I see no reason to single out Cat (though the Alphabet St. rap is BAD, especially in retrospect) when Tony M is so readily available for scrutiny. Prince calling for Tony is indeed tragic. It has been replaced by Prince calling for Larry Graham (there are other things even more annoying than bad rapping; Larry specializes in them). [Edited 8/24/12 11:57am]

It's not as tragic when Prince calls out Tony M or Larry because most of those songs guzzled sheep nuts anyway. But Alphabet St is a masterpiece. That rap is hokey as fuck. I concur. The "True Cofessions" album was a game changer. His version of "Bambi". wow !!! That album actually streeted the same day as N.W.A.'s "Efil4zaggin" and for a hot stupid minute I was confused( ) on which one to listen to first. Big Chick

yeah dude, go listen to Tony again. Cat may as well be Rakim compared to him.

See, it's like this. Tony M dropping a bad rap on a sing like Daddy Pop hardly matters. It's like if someone shits in a toilet that's already full of shit. It's just more shit. BUT when Cat drops some corny, dopey sounding, cheesy shit rap in a beautiful song like Alphabet St it's like someone pinching a loaf on a juicy steak. You don't want shit on your steak. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

You're not serious about this, are you? Checked your profile and you're to young the have experienced the Lovesexy album, but if you don't like that rap, you really don't get Prince in the 80's. I wish you had experienced it, than you wouldn't be saying a thing like this. Remember, rap wasn't very big those days. Cat was on fire during Lovesexy. You don't see that kind of energy in music these says. The madness. You wouldn't be saying, Cat, you can sit down, because she would tear you down.
It's good to look in the future, but don't talk down of the past. I didn't experience the 70's, but i can see how much was going on in that time and appreciate it.
Maybe you think Welcome 2 America is exciting? Think again.

I didn't mind the rap sort of stuff on his earlier work at all, but then, I'm no authority on hip-hop. I thought the spoken stuff on 1999 and rap on Girls and Boys were fine, mostly because he did them because he felt like it, not to try and hit a market. It was only when rap became big that the Prince raps seemed fake and forced. The raps weren't the problem with Lovesexy, over production and not having songs was the problem. I think I heard he did the album in less than a week, it shows, sounds like a jam heavy album, arranged later and with undeveloped music. He was also getting shamelessly un-self-conscious in a way he never, ever was at his peak. the "there's no bass guitar in this song" hearkens to the hails of brilliance he got from When Doves Cry which everyone said was genius because of the lack of a bottom.

You're making assumptions and taking things too seriously. I haven't updated my profile in 8 years because who gives a fuck. I was 10 when Lovesexy came out. I was a Prince fan as a kid because my mom totally dug him. We lived in Minneapolis. Fuck Welcome 2 America. Why would think I liked Welcome 2 America just because I criticized Cat's rap? What the fuck. Get a hold of yourself. I don't care how fresh Cat sounded at the time. Good for her. But the rap is cheesy as shit and hadn't stood the test of time as well as the rest of the album. Did you even read my other posts on this thread where I say how I think Alphabet St is a masterpiece and I love Lovesexy? I make one critique of Cat's shitty rap and your vagina gets all itchy. Good lord. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I think we've reached 100% total agreement that there's just no such thing as good rap.
"Rapper's Delight" is the exception that proves the rule.
Now that we have this monumental issue decided once and for all, I'm going to go enjoy my weekend!

you are right! You don't have to take the whole album the way it is. That's ridiculous. I can really enjoy a meal but think that the appetizer was too salty. I can say Hitchcock's Notorious is an amazing film but that I'm not a huge fan of Cary Grant. The only reason one would ever have to take Lovesexy as a whole is because Prince made it as one track on the cd! "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I think eye no, alpabet street, glam slam, anna stesia, when 2 r in love, positivity and lovesexy, are very unique in sound and show Prince and his band (with Eric ) in his best time. Furthermore the spiritual concept of the album contribute to make Lovesexy (and the Lovesexy tour) one of the highlights of his carreer. I guess your either really into it, or not, because of the spiritual aspect of this album.

If you take something out of its context the meaning changes automatically, so i do disagree. Since cat is part of Lovesexy. Its never tragic. If the rap would be in another song on the bad part of Emancipation. It might have been true. But fact is cat is part of Lovesexy. So its great....i guess love makes blind..

You are quite the rhetorician.
Honestly, the rap is bad, but it's not that bad. I actually have found it forgiveable because clearly Cat is just having fun.
Tony M and T.C. Ellis actually took themselves seriously, on the other hand. Their being so bad is far worse, then. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
