I disagree totally. It's a funky piece, rhymes well, fits the song and album and Cat is /was one funky chick. She moved superbly, was super dry in body shape & the rap was perfect.

It's just so unfortunate that Prince wanted to go near that genre. He should've left it totally alone.

You're not serious about this, are you?

Checked your profile and you're to young the have experienced the Lovesexy album, but if you don't like that rap, you really don't get Prince in the 80's. I wish you had experienced it, than you wouldn't be saying a thing like this. Remember, rap wasn't very big those days.

Cat was on fire during Lovesexy.

You don't see that kind of energy in music these says. The madness.

You wouldn't be saying, Cat, you can sit down, because she would tear you down.

It's good to look in the future, but don't talk down of the past. I didn't experience the 70's, but i can see how much was going on in that time and appreciate it.

Maybe you think Welcome 2 America is exciting? Think again.

You're making assumptions and taking things too seriously. I haven't updated my profile in 8 years because who gives a fuck. I was 10 when Lovesexy came out. I was a Prince fan as a kid because my mom totally dug him. We lived in Minneapolis. Fuck Welcome 2 America. Why would think I liked Welcome 2 America just because I criticized Cat's rap? What the fuck. Get a hold of yourself. I don't care how fresh Cat sounded at the time. Good for her. But the rap is cheesy as shit and hadn't stood the test of time as well as the rest of the album. Did you even read my other posts on this thread where I say how I think Alphabet St is a masterpiece and I love Lovesexy? I make one critique of Cat's shitty rap and your vagina gets all itchy. Good lord.

I don't have a vagina so it's pretty hard that it gets itchy.

but I'll do what you said, I won't take your posts seriously anymore from now on, shouldn't be that hard

Excellent. Case closed.

I was never a fan, still not, nor an authority on rap but I've got to admit The Message is about as powerful a work as any I've heard, TI"s Whatever You LIke has some great music and production in it. I love some of Tupac's work but by and large, never been a fan of the genre and hate seeing it blow up like it did and usurp every other genre, nearly wiping out a lot music.

One of the verses in The Message was recycled from an earlier 1979 Grandmaster Flash & Furious 5 song called Superrappin'.

ok, it's one of the seminal works of hip hop, it's Johnny B. Goode of the form. Of course thats a hard example to use but I think you'd get my point.

and how any adult at the time could take "spooky electric" seriously I don't know. The problem which happens to nearly all pop stars is that they go through a fixed adolescence because of their lifestyles, it's a problem for some fans because all of that mumbo jumbo which I loved at 15 was wearing thin at 20. And also, knowing Prince like I feel I knew him as an ardent fan who read about him, I was also getting used to him singing lyrics he clearly did not mean. He'd sing about peace and run his own little world like a tyrant, that's not so bad but I learned with him (and others) to seperate the artist from the art. Anyway, Spooky Electric, Anna Stesia, uhh....Lovesexy I know I'm missing some shit,, I never really thought of as any serious concept.

I like Cat on Alphabet St. Also liked her on Cindy C. (until it was revealed to be a complete rip off). Transmississippirap is untouchable in my opinion, it adds to the song and it is just burned into my expereince of that song and album (in a good way).

Cindy C isn't the ripoff, but her rap is undeniably lifted (fast forward to 3:39 of the song)

Topic starter has a context that is very in the 'now' and has no historical perspective.

Can't you hear a difference between Tony and Cat?

Can't you hear how they each fit in their time's music?

Can't you at least see some talent even if you do not like it?

Can't you enjoy music?

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Well, it's been proven according to Todd Akin that you're at no risk for getting pregnant after a legitimate ear rape.

And I would consdier that rap legitimate ear rape if I ever heard it.

I think the rap is awesome on Alphabet St. The best part of the song, and the reason the song didn't really get popular is because it wasn't in the radio edit. It totally plays into that "Sesame Street", alphabet-reciting, little- girls-doing-hopscotch-on-the-sidewalk, mood of childlike energy that is what Lovesexy was all about. It's a shame they didn't put in the video which had an "Electric Company"/70's "Sesame St" style anyway.

As an old school true Hip Hop follower I could never take Prince´s attempts at rapping seriously, and he probably would get much more respect from many people if he had never dabbled in rap, and I know that he enjoys massive respect among rappers just for being Prince ( so he doesn´t really NEED to prove himself as a rapper) but....when talking about Prince´s attempts at rap, one should also keep in mind that Prince has ALWAYS incorporated current trends into his music, just like he did with New Wave, Synth Pop, Heavy Metal, Rock etc. etc., so it was basically inevitable that he would start to use rap elements in his music.

Sad, but inevitable.
