When a protege fails who's fault is it?

Ours? Prince's? Or their own?

I listened to Andy's album on the weekend (Unfresh - it's free on Spotify). As her first album I gotta say its pretty good and u can definitely tell she wrote the lyrics herself as they're very raw & guileless.

So when Prince mentioned at the HOB after show that she presented him with her song People Pleaser he said he liked it but it needs a bit of funk [enter full NPG band]. So this got me thinking: We can't blame Andy for her choice of songs or "lack of talent" - if anything we should point the finger at Prince. Maybe her original version of PPL Pleaser was actually quite good & we may of liked it. The lyrics are nice, fresh & sometimes i can totally relate to them. Too bad now, we'll never hear it cos Prince pissed his purple funk all over it & as some may say: he ruined it. It doesn't suit. She probably hates it too but as a dutiful protege she just smiles & plays along.

Andy might have done alright & made it on her own but instead got sucked in by the illustrious promises of a rockstar (i mean who wouldn't??) U could say the same thing happened 4 the others. So who should we really be directing our anger at.
pray Peace in the House of Prince.

I couldn't agree more with what you're saying. Andy's first album is quite good and the songs were raw and honest. I'm sure she doesn't like the infusion of funk on every song. She's young and as someone who admittedly was not exposed to P's music growing up in Cameroon- she probably didn't realize what being a "protege" would mean.

I don't understand the idea that an opinion or taste from buyers/customers/listeners is their fault for artists not succeeding their goals in the music business. People like what they like.

Not pointing the finger at Prince but, looking at his past up till now, mostly I would have to say Prince,

1.) the Time (Prince had to many insecurities & control issues, firing 2 of its main players right before their 3rd album and the break out movie Purple Rain wasn't a good move, I would say Morris Day would have still be there if he hadn't made that move)

2.) Vanity 6, had what it took, mind games and control issues with his GF Vanity messed it up. ( I mean she left literally a few months before shoot the movie began)

3.) the Family, they were ready rehearsed and did their 1st show, they were ready, they were left without the management to get them out their, they should have been in France at least they would have felt a part of what was happening

4.) Sheila E's 3rd album failed because of changes in the Purple camp, bittersweet move, the protege scene fell off after the dismanteling of the Revolution

5.) Mazarati, I saw the potential, they opened at the UTCM premier, did shows with Sheila E, I think just more accessible interaction with Prince & the Revolution and more time together. Their image though the dress was a bit wacky, that was a Prince move. And the Parade era had some of the most stylish outfits, Mazarati looked out of place.

6.) Jill Jones as a protege was not visibly included in the SOTT scene, she should have opened a few shows, she should have been on backup vocals at times, someway somehow Prince & Jill should have been meshed

7.) Madhouse, opened 4 the SOTT shows but the band consisted mainly of the SOTT band, but a mystery band... some cool stuff could have happened there

8.) I just can't get with 1990's proteges _____

9.) Bria, I thought there would have been a good start, I don't know if it was Prince or Bria, she should have been on backup vocals in Prince band, she should have done a song at least 1 or 2 during his shows... I don't know who I can blame it on though

10.) I like Andy Allo, She looks good with the guitar but I don't know if her playing can hang with the band behind her, Prince should have helped her form her own band (consisting of mostly people she knows) if that NPG stuff isn't her, it may not work

I can't agree more. The Time on the Purple Rain Tour would have made them unstoppable why Prince would create something and fear is beyond belief.

Mazarati was just wasted completely, that was the last true nap town funk record wasn't it?

This is a very 'business' transaction' it's not a personal beef with Prince, Prince created the protege group, and this is more focused NOW because of Andy, Prince has a career of 'protege' acts most of them women. No one is saying they didn't need Prince or could have done better without Prince, since we are talking about them as a Prince protege group

there was some bad business moves in most cases on Prince's part. Remember they couldn't do stuff outside of his management.

Yeah, even Prince at the 2007 Coachella Festival when he had Morris & Jerome open with him said "Now this is how the Purple Rain tour was supposed to be" followed by Sheila E

He was still saying that "the Time is the only band I was ever afraid of..." line into the 1990's

Afraid of what? 2 different styles and presentations from his

They could have only made his 'princedom' larger

Yeah, especially when I saw them perform Prince songs, they had the 'nap town funk' rock energy to help increase Prince's vision, I enjoy the album, and it showed that Prince's band members had a lot of creative ideas and potential to help him manage Mazarati via BrownMark

Exactly!! It's like as if he purposely sets them up to fail. Sounds totally insane . Almost as if he goes so far as to get them an album, change their image, give em a name then boom walks away & doesn't follow through. The ones that did follow through ie Sheila, Bria do not do so well.
I wonder where he's going wrong? Because if u look at Jay-Z & Usher who each have successful protégés, u never see them all over them. Wat I mean is u never see Jay-z fauning all over his, or saying things like I have a crush on her (his protege is Rihanna btw).
Maybe what Prince does wrong is get too emotionally involved with his protégés.

you can lead a horse to water, but you can,t make him drink. That,s all I have to say about that.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Tamar was a member of Girls Tyme, the early version of Destiny's Child.

LaTavia Roberson (rapping, right front), Beyonce Knowles (plain t, center front), Kelly Rowland (right back), Tamar Davis (green shorts, center back). The other two girls are Nikki and Nina Taylor.

What was Prince's goal with his more recent proteges? With a lot of them I don't even think it was about music, per se. Not implying it was about sex exactly either. In some cases he just needed a muse. I think he needed Andy Allo to inspire him, and clearly she does. I think he needed Tamar to help him feel young again and affirm his belief in what a true soul diva should sound like. LotusFlower was about proving himself, again, as a songwriter so Bria's project was included. There are probably various reasons for all of these protoges, but since Prince has had like 30 failed albums of his own and an additional 20 or so failed protege records in the last 25 years, it's kind of safe to assume that he doesn't enter into these things with an eye toward mainstream recognition anyway. It's all about his personal needs.

I believe his goal was to try to get a woman who wasn't interested in him jealous. I believe Lotusflower and 20TEN have songs on it about him and the woman. It seems like Prince couldn't believe she didn't want him and his ego couldn't take it. Why wouldn't she want him his most devoted fans will ask? If you read the threads on this site it's not hard to see Prince acts too controlling and hypocritical. I think he needed to pay the perfume company and his taxes. He also needed a new muse so he started pimping Andy, puts her in the NPG and basically uses her to help promote his concerts. They wear hearts on their fingers, the fans have something to debate about. He wears her face on his shirt, She asks her facebook friends what she should do. He starts showering her with gifts. It's all too contrived but it keeps the fans debating. Unlike some who visit this site, I realized what's going on with Prince and his current investment a long time ago. This so-called "crush" on Andy seems to be nothing but a farce from beginning to end. It looks foolish seeing a 54 yrs old, Jehovah's Witness on the rebound, desperately trying to buy the affection of a young 20-something with taking her on tour, buying her guitars (she can't play very well), excessing photos of her, executive producing a cd but it's still not released and not too many people will buy it, and he got a big band for her thin voice, I agree it's all about his personal needs and he knows people want to see him so he does inconsiderate things to his fans while trying hard to get publicity, any way he can for this latest investment, Andy Allo.

I don't really see Wendy & Lisa as proteges, but I understand what you're saying

From my understanding everyone after the Revolution kept working, many helped each other

I look into the band members of Prince and the protege band members and you see everyone doing their thing. Success doesn't mean 'stardom'

Even Vanity had a pretty nice career after Prince

Apollonia(not official lol) rode the success of Purple Rain

I think it's mostly the success of the actual protege act, not the members after Prince. I do believe in most of the cases, Prince dealt a bad hand in managing 'his' protege acts, they couldn't officially exist without him

I'll address the parts not crossed out ... ewe

You might not really know Prince's history in connection with 'his' protege acts and how his 'ownership' can make or break them.

His ownership - to this day the names belong to him, so even though the players can still play together, if he doesn't want them to use the name, they can't. that's how much control he has

I never mentioned anything about the "stardom" ur talking about... and to face the facts Vanitys career never got far any way .. a few appearances here and there...o and maybe a album onthe side but didnt really lift off as what ur trying to tell me...u may look into the band OUTSIDE of Prince but i see the whole picture either way they was tied to Prince .. and if u wanna say Apples "rode" the PR train go for it but Vanity did as well as a matter of fact they ALL did(the ones tied to the movie) .. or did u forget she was originally was cast before Apples( for Apples role) in PR?And TBH her singing SUCKED in The Last Dragon...sounded like her straining to hit the notes but Apples did much better(since he added Lisa to balance it all out on the album and yes even i can hear Lisa's voice in the song TMWY) So don t correct me on my opinion if the topic was for specific proteges it should of stated it...i guess u missed the part of me stating in my original statement... its wasnt P fault..

Wendy & Lisa isnt into the kind of on screen "stardom" ur talking or thinking.. they write scores for film/tv shows and have won awards as well as gone and made a few albums of their own WITHOUT P help and without the former members help( this includes the scores they write for tv shows) Yes maybe the first few albums former members helped on and that isnt including their siblings.. the more recent albums are all them

Don't forget Tamar

oh, I was never into Tamar and that scene, Tamar outside of Prince

Did Prince form a band around her, or create her image, or was she an 'already existing act' that Prince pulled her to sing in his band? I don't know the mechanics of their relationship

If u wasnt into Tamar then why are u trying ur best to discourage her opinion and her view on that particular subject? Seriously...if u dont know the mechanics of the relationship or took the time to understand maybe luv knows more about it then what u think and that is why she stated her opinion... P "created her image" regardless if he pulled her to sing with his band or not, face it she is here to stay and if she can/cant pull off the act with/without P then fine only time will tell if and when things will happen.

Smurf theme song-seriously how many fucking "La Las" can u fit into a dam song wall

Where did you read me try my best to discourage her opinion?

I was asking questions about Tamar,

those were not statements,

Questions they were to learn of their situation

Questions

rolleyes

check post #13 reply, they clearly read my post without attitude, and understood I was asking a question for the sake of learning

Thanks MickyDolenz, you're a gentleman & a scholar thumbs up!

Wendy & Lisa isnt into the kind of on screen "stardom" ur talking or thinking.. they write scores for film/tv shows and have won awards as well as gone and made a few albums of their own WITHOUT P help and without the former members help( this includes the scores they write for tv shows) Yes maybe the first few albums former members helped on and that isnt including their siblings.. the more recent albums are all them

combative ... forgot 2 put on my battle armour

It's seriously clear the thread is about Prince Protege Projects, not what any of them do after they leave his camp, because

1.) they would no longer be considered his proteges

2.) he could not be responsible for their careers

3.) Wendy & Lisa nor any of his band members would be considered proteges

4.) Proteges Acts = the Time, Vanity 6, Sheila E, the Family, Mazarati, Madhouse (they are called FORMER proteges after they leave the camp)

5.) Gayle Chapman, Andre Cymone, Dr Fink, Brown Mark, etc are Bandmembers not proteges (they are called FORMER bandmates/members after they leave the band)

6.) U don't have to defend Wendy & Lisa 2 me, I have much love & respect for them and what they individual brought to Purple Music, and respect for their careers after

pro·té·gé (prt-zh, prt-zh)

n.
One whose welfare, training, or career is promoted by an influential person.
Prince band promoted him, Prince promoted his proteges

peri1025

yea i noticed that too...in one of the pics the caption is "i've fallen and i can't get up...fallen in love that is" I know it's just to keep tongues wagging but I'm starting to think it's not as big of a priority for her because she's just enjoying being in that state right now...
