I'd probably have to give that title to Paul McCartney to be honest. We're here, might as well get into it.

No, I disagree..
Only the albums on Warner Bros. 1978 to 1995 showed us the "greatest Prince, genius of a generation etc"...
Prince albums post 1995 showed an "average Prince", the long time period 1996-2010 is weak (speaking about his albums).
However:
Noone could beat Prince in 1980 to 1988, noone.
9 excellent albums in a row, from Dirty Mind to Lovesexy, (incl. the bootleg mania of The Black Album and incl. the 2 "genius" double albums 1999 & SOTT).
But... the 1980's are so very loooong ago.
I miss it so much.

^So you keep telling us. But you do have a point. I admire Prince a LOT as a musician, but as a songwriter he doesn't seem to have a awful lot left to say. But at least he's funkier than Macca!

Give it a rest.
We're all here because we love the music and following his career, but cool off on the sycophancy. He is stoppable, he is surpassable, he is mesurable.

Bowie came first. | |

Prince don't have anything to prove anymore. His catalog is in the top ten of all time. He is established as one of the greats. He has set the bar for this generation of musicians to have to exceed. This is from a guy that the critics wrote of in 1978. From a guy that was booed in 1979-80 when opening for the Stones. From a guy that single handedly wrote his own, changed his name, reemerged and hasn't slowed down since...Why don't y'all appreciate the blessing of having a true real musician around with longevity and versatility and originality. Prince did it all back then..The rest of the industry still has to catch up..

Fantastic!
A new immature asslicker who doesn't know what he's talking about....
And I love the myriad of wealthy reasons and details he gave us to support his very intelligent claim. [Edited 9/25/12 5:09am]

He set he bar high for himself as well
changing the name isn't impressive, many musicians do it
and yeah he has slowed down, and that's ok, 1981-1986 Prince and band new album every year bsides and long version, concert videos to accompany 2 movies the Time(3 albums) Vanity 6, Apollonia 6 Sheila E(3 albums) the Family, Mazarati and 1985/86 have the larges back catalogue of music (most unreleased) because he had so much on his plate
It's ok that he hasn't or can't do that again
And we do appreciate Prince, Just because we may disagree with the topic line doesn't mean we don't. He's not the greatest genius, he is 1 of many others (in the area of music) there are geniuses of all different lifestyles and genre

Unless any of us were alive in his time, I don't think he could be considered a genius of our generation lol anyone here in their late 80's - 90's ? any 100 yr old Prince fans hehehe Could he be considered our generation? 14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955 gen·er·a·tion (jn-rshn)

Depends on what generation you're from. In my lifetime, i'd put Stevie & Bowie first. Their runs were better than Prince's IMO. Bowie is far more iconic, Stevie more respected.

Bang on. Though I'd say he started waning around '90.
There I was thinking this was a jokey arse-licking thread too.
I shoulda known.

I guess it depends on what generation you're from.
Since Prince and I are almost the same age, and are therefore certainly of the same generation, I would agree with you.
If I was 10 years older, I'd probably agree with Paul McCartney or John Lennon. Twenty years older and I'd likely go with Elvis.
If I was 10 years younger, then that means I'd have come of age during grunge/rap and therefore it would be impossible to list a greatest genius, as there were none.

Do people really think 'For You', 'Prince' and 'Controversy' were all that? I'd say Controversy was a step down from Dirty Mind. ATWIAD (after 1999 and PR) is another that doesn't figure that highly on polls amongst fans either. You can poke holes in Prince's 'great run'.
For the record i love all those albums but yeah, i have my doubts.

For U & Prince, definately. Ur looking at the start of his genius
Controversy, yes was it the most cohesive? prob not, but Controversy, Let's Work, Do Me Baby, Private Joy, Sexuality...
ATWIAD just because it wasn't like 1999/PR doesn't make it genius, which it is, and many Prince fans love that album + bsides and it showed a range of creativity that took us beyond what we thought Prince could bring out, without it there would have been no SOTT
I mean if we are talking about 'musical' genius, yes that period was his greatest it's not just his albums but the whole of the era

Spot on. Btw, personally, I can't see how you can be a Prince fan and also like Dylan. Despite being from the same state, they're polar opposites. Prince is one of the most exciting artists ever. Dylan, on the other hand, is dreary, plodding and a miserable so and so, with a voice to match, and lets face it, the most overrated singer-songwriter.

i've actually been in quite a dylan phase lately .. he is great .. it blows my mind when people can't understand how good dylan really is .. prince is a pop musician who did some meaningful music for a period of time .. dylan is a meaningful musician who happen to have some pop appeal for some time .. hendrix, the beatles and i am sure prince and certainly myself all agree dylan is right up there with the best of them ..

I guess some people just can't get past his voice! It literally comes down to that.
I bet it grinds P's gears he'll always be the second most important musician out of Minnesota.

PRINCE TALKS ROLLING STONE (1985)
Prince is fiddling with the tape deck inside the T-Bird. On low volume comes his unreleased "Old Friends 4 Sale," an arrow-to-the-heart rock ballad about trust and loss. Unlike "Positively 4th Street" -- which Bob Dylan reputedly named after a nearby Minneapolis block -- the lyrics are sad, not bitter. "I don't know too much about Dylan," says Prince, "but I respect him a lot. 'All Along the Watchtower' is my favorite of his. I heard it first from Jimi Hendrix."
