The rest of us never understood why you guys didn't get Lovesexy. After Emancipation, he never approached the heights of Lovesexy. No, it's not his best - and suffers from being the follow-up to his best, but it is great. But I don't have to take the entire album the way it is because I usually edit out the excess. And there's a lot of excess on Prince albums (genius or not, he REALLY needed a producer to edit out the cringey moments).
Speaking of which, almost every attempt at rap by Prince or one of the countless talentless muses and/or dancers he's had have been cringe-inducing. I see no reason to single out Cat (though the Alphabet St. rap is BAD, especially in retrospect) when Tony M is so readily available for scrutiny. Prince calling for Tony is indeed tragic. It has been replaced by Prince calling for Larry Graham (there are other things even more annoying than bad rapping; Larry specializes in them).

I didn't mind the rap sort of stuff on his earlier work at all, but then, I'm no authority on hip-hop. I thought the spoken stuff on 1999 and rap on Girls and Boys were fine, mostly because he did them because he felt like it, not to try and hit a market. It was only when rap became big that the Prince raps seemed fake and forced. The raps weren't the problem with Lovesexy, over production and not having songs was the problem. I think I heard he did the album in less than a week, it shows, sounds like a jam heavy album, arranged later and with undeveloped music. He was also getting shamelessly un-self-conscious in a way he never, ever was at his peak. the "there's no bass guitar in this song" hearkens to the hails of brilliance he got from When Doves Cry which everyone said was genius because of the lack of a bottom.
Damn, I disagree!! The production was great at that time, it sounded fresh and heavy!!
Ok, SOTT maybe his masterpiece, 2 bad that album didn´t have Lovesexy´s sound, a lot of us were blown away! A jam? Sure, Dance On and Lovesexy are playfull...the last one IS what Prince was all about in the 80´s. Never understood how some "fans" never got this.
And I don´t like the album 4 it´s spiritual concept, in fact it bothers me, the music is just so good!
Do you like the other one from Cindy C.? I think it was going to be a part of Positivity but not included(?)
The beat won't stop with the JM Jock.
If he jacks the box and the partyrocks.
The clock tick tocks and the place gets hot.
So ease your mind and setyourselffree.

Really love this!! Cindy C is great, 2 bad the production of this song was not as brilliant as the Lovesexy sound!

I guess I should clarify, the actual sound was great to my ears, you could hear every speck of sound clearly, great clear sound which was perfect for the new cd's of the time. His music has never sounded so clear to me, but by overproduction I mean the cluttering of horn arrangements, vocals, and so on. Someone on hear compared lovesexy to an aging lady covering herself with lots of makeup to disguise the fact that she's not what she was. It was overdone to my ears. Prince and Rock and Roll have always been best when it's not so overdone.

Well, I do like the comparison you make here with the old lady, little did we know at that point that this was what was about 2 happen in years 2 come.
And yes, a lot of casual listeners complained about the overload on noices and stuff going on, I remember a friend of mine saying (after a quick listen 2 some songs) ;this guy sure can make noice! It´s a fact that U shouldn´t listen 2 this album as background music in a house or car filled with children playing...
Anyway, I have great memories listening on my own 2 this album and I looove Livesexy
how about P's rap from "Push"??? " u don't me on the mic...nah man...u dont want me on the mic??" your fuckin right we dont...sit your non rapping ass down!!!
Alphabet Street could've done without Cat. Come to think of it, anything could've done without her. Only good thing I can think of that came out of Cat being around was that version of Happy Birthday.
I think the rap is awesome on Alphabet St. The best part of the song, and the reason the song didn't really get popular is because it wasn't in the radio edit. It totally plays into that "Sesame Street", alphabet-reciting, little- girls-doing-hopscotch-on-the-sidewalk, mood of childlike energy that is what Lovesexy was all about. It's a shame they didn't put in the video which had an "Electric Company"/70's "Sesame St" style anyway.

So agree !
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)
