Digging your post as always. Haven't heard them, but my sense is, if even YOU don't play "Sea of Everything" and wish "Everybody Loves Me" had stayed in the vault, then those songs must be horrible. No wonder no one's put them up on YT.

For Prince standards, the album is pretty weak. There is no soul in it, no emotion.
I don't like the vocals, the album is boring and it feels like everything sounds the same. Lavaux, Beginning Endlessly and Sticky Like Clue are okay, although the last one has one of the worst raps ever recorded. Even Tony did a better job! The drumsounds are cheap, a bit like the Batman album, although that one was 10 times more exciting than this one.
Prince shpuldn't release everything he wants.

Future Soul Song is the best and only song that I really still play from 20Ten.

Thanks a lot!!
I would concur with your assumption! Those songs would be very much better in the vault. LOL. You mind me asking, what had not made you listen to these songs yet? It's Button Therapy, Baby!

Thanks a lot for the suggestion Spirit!
I believe they may bring a respect for the last three! The last three kind of goes downhill, it's not horrible..But it just lacks what was brought for in the beginning. I like someone wish he added 'Cause & Effect in exchange for 'Everybody Loves Me'. I also do really like the way Walk In Sand falls into Sea Of Everything.
It is brillant, and I honestly prefer this over 'Planet Earth'. BUT only by a few points! lol It's Button Therapy, Baby!

Total 0.75/5 (that's pretty generous)
This album deserves nothing but a slap in the face. Prince at his least inspired and most self indulgent. Lyrics are crap, instrumentation sounds like he did it on a casio. Would have thrown out the CD if I didn't need it from a completest standpoint. The most embarrassing album Prince has ever produced.
Too funny, mostly accurate. Here's my take 1.Compassion=1/5 2.Beginning Endlessly =2/5 3.Future Soul Song = 3/5 4.Sticky Like Glue = 3/5 5.Act of God = 1/5 6.Lavaux = 2/5 7. Walk in Sand = 0/5 8.Sea of Everything = 0/5 9.Everybody Loves Me = 0/5 10. Laydown = 4/5
Total 1/5 (my least favorite Prince album)

That's true, but when I checked for it a year ago, the price was higher than I was willing to pay, around $10 more or less. I see now there's more reasonably priced ones, but they always seem to go up in bidding. Anyway, MaddMaxx says he got it for free but still thinks he overpaid!

I paid about 6 bucks (this included shipping) when they first came out. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

1. Compassion= 3.5/5 Fun and feelgood track, nice chorus. Feels a little unfinished in the production department (drums especially), but nice track nevertheless.
2. Beginning Endlessly = 3.5/5 This track is somewhat plodding on at parts, but I still like it. Very Princey track, lovely rhythm guitar in the second half of the song.
3. Future Soul Song = 4/5 Beautiful song, although not adding much new to Prince's array of ballads.
4. Sticky Like Glue = 4.5/5 Now we are really getting the album started, such a fun(ky) track. More of this please!
5. Act of God = 4.5/5 Another belter, really liking this one!
6. Lavaux = 4.5/5 Remeniscent of the Pointer Sisters "Automatic", but still a good track in its' own right.
7. Walk in Sand = 2.5/5 Nicely recorded track, but a somewhat boring ballad. I don't always skip it though.
8. Sea of Everything = 2/5 Another somewhat bland ballad. Probably the worst track of the album.
9. Everybody Loves Me = 3.5/5 Lots of people hate it, but I really like the sound of this track. I know it is a bit childish/musical-like, but it always makes me happy and I like singing along to the chorus while driving in my car.
10. Laydown = 2.5/5 Some interesting musical ideas here, but I don't like the rap/lyrics. Luckily it is short and over before you know it.
All n all this adds ups to an objective mark of 3.5/5 for this album. But because I like 20Ten much better than most of his post-2000 output I give it a 4 out of 5.
If he had a good engineer/producer onboard that could have made the overall sound of the album a bit "bigger"/ harder hitting, and dropped one (or both!) of the last two ballads in favor of uptempo material, then it could have been one of the best Prince albums ever. Shame, but I still think it is a very pleasant listen.

Overall I do not like it, its a huge fall off from Lotusflow3r and his worst since NEWS and the late 90s.
Overall I gave it 54/100, I don't know why there is so much love for it, its garbage Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

What does living in the US have to do with anything? I live in the UK but still have a physical copy of Lotusflow3r, which was never released here. Buying from overseas is trivial these days. RIP

this is half of a great album for me. add the half of MPLSound that I love and it would probably be his best album in a decade, overtaking LF for me.

I really like this album. It does have a feeling of a side project, not fully realised, but it's one album I love listening to all the way though.
1.Compassion=3.5/5 - Nice opening, but it feels like a 'Let's Go Crazy lite' track.
2.Beginning Endlessly =4.5/5 - I love this one. The synths, the funky guitar near the end, it's all good.
3.Future Soul Song = 5/5 - The best song on the album imho. Such a beautiful ballad, that should be getting airplay. I can't understand why so many dislike it?
4.Sticky Like Glue = 4/5 - A cool funky track.
5.Act of God = 3.5/5 - One of the songs that's grown on me. Nice track, if unspectacular.
6.Lavaux = 5/5 - The one song that actually feels like a true lost 80's track. Brilliant synths, brilliant guitar, great lyrics. My only criticism is that it's not long enough.
7. Walk in Sand = 3/5 - Predictable love song, but a pleasant addition.
8.Sea of Everything = 3/5 - A sweet ballad, that would have been the perfect album close. Unfortunately Prince felt like adding....
9.Everybody Loves Me = 2/5 - The stinker on the album. I didn't give it 1/5 because I personally like the deliberate tongue in cheek throwaway attitude of the song. But as an album track, no!
10. Laydown = 4/5 - Dark and funky. Prince's rapping rarely works, but it seems to work here. The lycric 'Here comes the purple yoda' is classic.

Here we go then
Compassion 8 outta 10 -Let's do the purple Time Warp, a load of rollocking bollocky loveliness
Love the first half. Change Laydown for Turn me Loose and it's a 8/10

yes, well that's a lot of ifs. as it is, it's pretty average and uninspiring. and I'm sure if he combined it with half of MPLSound, it'd be the 2 halves that I hate, knowing Prince.

Compassion = 0/10 Beginning Endlessly = 7/10 Future Soul Song = 2/10 Sticky Like Glue = 7/10 Act Of God = 1/10 Lavaux = 3/10 Walk In Sand = 2/10 Sea Of Everything = 1/10 Everybody Loves Me = 0/10 Laydown = 2/10
Couple of decent tracks, but some truely awful lyrical/musical clunkers. Still twice as good as MPLSound though.

agree. never got what people like about this, and I see people mention how much they love it with some regularity when it comes up.
reminds me of one of those songs a fading disco diva from the '70s would have done in the mid-'80s and no one would have paid attention.
the whole vibe of this song sounds like something he should have given to Shelbey to sing and once it was finished, locked it up in the vault.
it's not bad. it's just... nothing.

I wouldn't call it a bad album, but it certainly is not one of his best either. Kind of strange album I think.
I remember listening to it a couple of times after it came out and that I thought it had some interesting ideas, but also that they were mostly just that: ideas.
For example I liked that he toke some odd directions on Beginning endlessly and Laveaux, but he could have done much more with those songs.
I also liked that he used some of the early 80's lynn sound and funky guitar rifs again, but that sounded a bit forced and silly sometimes too. It didn't have that personality, power and energy it had before (and still has).
Coupled to some not so great sounding singing, lyrics and songwriting on Compassion, Act of God and Everybody loves me for example, it was pretty dissapointing to hear.
But I know Prince albums can grow on you, so I tried listening to it again on youtube but found out that I couldn't, except for covers and remixes by others. Strange again...

I will never understand why some folks rate 20T3N lower than C&D, New Power Soul, The Slaughterhouse/Chocolate Invasion or MPLSound...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Maybe I'd give FutureSoulSong a 1/5 but that's about it. The album is so bad that Prince needs to release a new record just so this record can be forgotten and doesn't permenantly stain his legacy. I remember when The Truth album was out and that had a number of bad but somewhat defensible tracks on it and I thought, 'well this was about as dull and boring as Prince can get', but then came 20T3N and it sounds like Prince is on anti-depressants. It's probably the worst Prince album of all, and when you consider how many bad albums Prince has out there now, that's really saying something. Worst than LotusFlow3r. Worst than Rave. Worst than Emanciplastic. Worst than all the girlfriend/side-piece albums. Worst than the instrumental albums not named Madhouse. Yep, 20T3N is the worst Prince record of all. Though this Andy Allo project is looking like a strong candidate for Prince's Album Hall of Shame.
