Prince @ the 1985 American Music Awards 1.28.1985

Prince & the Revolution @ the American Music Awards in 1985

12th American Music Awards -

held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California, January 28, 1985

Prince & the Revolution + Big Chick

Sheila E & band sitting in front of them (performs the Glamorous Life)

Apollonia 6 in attendance

* Purple Rain Favorite Black Album

* When Doves Cry Favorite Black single
* Purple Rain Favourite Pop Album

I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted one time to see you laughing
I only wanted to see you laughing in the purple rain

Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only wanted to see you bathing in the purple rain

I never wanted to be your weekend lover
I only wanted to be some kind of friend, hey
Baby, I could never steal you from another
It's such a shame our friendship had to end

Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only wanted to see you underneath the purple rain

Honey, I know, I know, I know times are changin'
It's time we all reach out for something new, that means you too
You say you want a leader, but you can't seem to make up your mind
And I think you better close it and let me guide you to the purple rain

Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
If you know what I'm singin' about up here, come on raise your hand
Purple rain, purple rain
I only want to see you, only want to see you in the purple rain

Prince & The Revolution perform Purple Rain at the 1985 American Music Awards

I love watching Cyndi Lauper lose it when he kicks the mic sitting in the front row. I think this is also the year she sang When You Were Mine..one of the best covers IMO.

PUSH YOUR WAY UP 2 THE FRONT, AND SHAKE YOUR MOTHER FUCKIN DOO LOOSE!!

Was that during the performance? The audience don't seem visible.

Its an electrifying performance though, I feel bad for whoever came after him.

Despite what anybody says, that was the time right there. I was just a youngin' but I was SO into the whole thing, the look, the music, the FEELING.

I'm just saying...

Favorite Black Album? eek I'm sure he was pissed about that. He didn't want to classified as a Black artist. Remember he fought WB on this early on.

As a nation, I love how politically correct we have become. lol

Fantastic thread! Thanks for the great pics and gifs.

If there's one thing in my life I'm grateful for, it's having been able to experience firsthand the whole Prince and the Revolution phenomenon of the 80s. There is NO WAY to adequately describe or explain what being around during that time truly, completely felt like. It was magic.

Thanks again for this thread. Brings back some amazing memories.

lol I know, labels hadn't caught up to the crossover happening yet

But he took Pop album too

funny is the music and albums he went up against Tina Turner especially was anything but "Black" in the sense of what you would think the music would be, her album was rock n rock and they played MJacksons Beat It to accompany his nom which is rock in roll

They just go by genre know correct?

1.28.1985 Prince & Jill Jones downtown L.A. on the way 2 Carlos & Charles rest.

I was sittin' pretty with a beautiful friend ("Oh darling")
When this man tries 2 get in the car
("Hey Prince, come on, give us a smile, eh?")
No introduction, "How've U been?"
Just - "Up yours! Smile, that's right, U're a star!" (Star)
