That was the Purple Reign, it scared even him, PRINCE WAS HUGE, that night was magic, 3 awards Sheila E performing, the whole purple camp except for the Time, P&the Revolution, Sheial E and band, Jill Jones, Apollonia 6, the Purple Rain performance that killed it, they proved they deserved that one

This was also the night that created Hello

That was like his 1st HUGE award show, outside of Uptown right?

This performance completely blew me away! It was awesome!

I missed the whole '80s excitement, was too young, but in the video of this, I could see how young he was (he looks like a baby!), how big this performance was for him, and how full of emotion he was.

Was it his first public performance of "Purple Rain"? (except for the live recording at 1st Ave)

This thread also gives a better feel & context for the whole phenomenon that was this performance.

Thanks, OF4S!

If i could compare Lionel Ritchie's reaction to any artist of my time, i would say he had a Kanye West moment. lol

Someone asked for a Prince photo. This one was taken in 1985 as he arrived at the American Music Awards with his amusing looking entourage. Photo by Brad Elterman

Prince arriving @ the AMA with Big Chick, John Nelson(father)

Father Nelson look good in that. Plus that was a different time, everyone was dressed in costume, people dressed like Prince everywhere

funny but watching a clip of it on yt, I stumbled on an 86 presentation which I never saw, p in his cherry moon stage looking sharp gave an award coincidentally to hughie lewis who gave him one a year earlier. he seemed to be trying to give a different outgoing vibe off.

Yep, she did. If you search a video with the phrase "PRINCE The American Music Awards 1985 Sheila E." and find a video that's 13:07 in length, you'll find the Sheila E. performance, and toward the end, Vanity presenting the award to Prince. smile

How Prince just gone hand the award to Big Chick like "here u go" lol

Sorry I deleted who said what?!

But is it Just My Imagination: or was Prince the only one "allowed" to walk back to his seat as opposed to being directed back stage? I seem to recall that he was. This clip sure seems to indicate Prince is going back to his seat?

anyone else recall that?

I remember watching it and my dad was there and the song started and I was so scared he would notice how attentive I was to the performance. He did ask if I listened to him, I said, "everyone does..." he said something like: was this the same guy that I had the album of years ago? I said "oh i am not sure...I think so" and he said something about it being unhealthily and that he was 'the prince of darkness' i messed up and corrected "no that's Ozzy, prince is his royal badness...."

anyway he never said much about it after that. I was 16 so what could he really say?

I know what you mean. When my Mom eventually got around to watching Purple Rain (post Lovesexy), she didn't want me to talk about Prince because she thought he was advocating the physical abuse of women. shrug I still don't understand how my beloved, and theretofore, rational thinking mother could come to such a conclusion because someone plays a part in a movie. Thank goodness she has mellowed through the years and was happy when I got to see him live last year. touched

i was almost 19... about to go into the Army and my mom freaked out. She got some tapes from those guys... some brothers. they had a horribly inaccurate tape set "why knock rock"

and then my older brother's WIFE came over and my brother, my SIL, my other brothr and I were going to camp out in the living room (mom had a tiny apartment). and she had a fit... and i told her "it is okay mom Prince told me to cut off my penis...." she did not take it well.

those were the days when an artist could still shock, probably the last days that that could happen. the shock tactics these day are just rehashes of all the Madonnas, elvis', princes etc.., it looks foolish to try and do anything these days. hate to sound old but it's all been done, only the media makes fools out of themselves attempting to hype up a new scandalous act from someone.

I don't even know if the word is 'shock' it definately was the last of days when a person could be a super star of those magnitudes.

Yes everyone else is really just following 'overtly' most of the time people from the 1980's a before

I would say the early-mid 1990's Madonna did a very good job with causing shock value and controversy the 1990's at that time had a LOT of social change happening so it was ripe for it

Prince should have had his slice of the cake but he didn't get it, it did good for Janet in the early 1990's -not shock but sexual freedom
