Prince is done as a studio act

Hey everyone,

I saw the guy live at the metropolis in Montreal recently and then shortly after for two shows in Toronto and then in London, Ontario. The metropolis show was off the chain!!! He was brilliant as was the crowd.

Unfortunately, I'm getting the impression that the guy is done as a studio act. He hasn't really blown my mind since the Come and Gold Experience era. Do you think he's got another Mountains, I Hate U, Come, And God Created Woman, Morning Papers, Hello, If I Was Your Girlfriend or Little Red Corvette in him? Songs like 17 Days and She's Always In My Hair are treasures from the past and he's written nothing like this in decades!!!

He stretched out more than he had since TRC on that release..the song Wall Of Berlin is just indescribable imo. Colonized Mind is a cousin but not a rip off in the tradition of Joy In Repetition. $ is some playful Movie Star like pop...the songs are there. People are just looking for that first hit of cocaine high.

How can you not appreciate songs like dreamer, colonized mind, wall of berlin, $, here, etc.? There's truly great stuff on that record.

Lotusflow3r was a fantastic and artistic album imo

OK, maybe it would've faired better without Mplsound or Elixer (I can see that Prince continues to need to quality control

But Boom, Walls of berlin, $, Colonized Mind, Feel Good......, 4ever, Dreamer, Love Like Jazz are all quality tracks

Clearly the whole site debacle soured the experience. only wish he had made the site more accessible, cheaper (if not free to enter). Maybe then more would've joined.

But no, I dont agree that he is done as a studio act. He simply needs to quality control and stop devaluing releases with the free giveaway nonsense and join the digital release age and get his stuff out there to the international market and promote it properly. of course it would also help to perform said tracks live!

I've only listened to Lotusflow3r twice. So it's pretty difficult for me to go into detail after several years went by. But I can remember it being a very predictable castrated version of TRC with conventional songwriting and lots of guitar noodling. Mostly a rehash of old ideas, but just not that strong.

That's exactly what I do because it kinda hurts my ears to listen to music just created for the sake of it.

Replace the word "create" with "release" and it should be more clear what I actually meant.

After reading thr responses, I just realized get I had forgotten as to where I was posting... I'm afraid that the org is more often than not a place where deep discussions of music are not to be had.

To put songs like $, wall of Berlin and boom in the same space as mountains, 17 days or when doves cry or little red corvette is insane but a good indication of just how blinded and insular some of these folks' musical tastes are.

Sure the record demonstrates just how freakingly awesome prince plays guitar but let's not dupe ourselves into thinking that there are incredible songs on that record. Colonized Mind is dope as hell though... It was disappointing to hear that the chords and overall feel/sound were borrowed heavily from an older track by another artist.

Anyhow, I'll stop tryin now

It isn't like what you posted was exactly deep dude. In fact it was typical primary type whining. It seems you didn't get the response you were expecting or looking for. You dont like people disagreeing with you.

Who put those songs in the same space? Not saying they aren't wporthy of his 80's work but nobody compared the new soings to the old songs. Seems you just want folks to down the current music or you get upset. Is this how you do? Aren't you a teacher?

. Anyhow, I'll stop tryin now J

Thanks/good.

J...In a way I kind of hear what you are saying. The classic titles you mentioned were coming from a young guy who was wild, free and pushing the envelope. For some of us those songs are attached to our youth. There's some folks who thought with the name change/being married/WB fiasco/SLAVE on his face, etc he lost his edge and his mind.

There's some fans that I know that hated "T.G.E" when it came out. They wanted to know where was the next "Erotic City" or "Luv Or $". Now they consider "T.G.E" a classic.

P is mature and has a different train of thought and lifestyle now. I thought "Lotus" was great and it was a good return to form. It also made up for the lackluster CD "Planet Earth"..(just my opinion). I guess when an artist gets to a certain point the subject matter starts to change and they find (or run out of) different things to sing about.

I liked "Sticky Like Glue" and "Lauvaux"..(did I spell that right?)..Those 2 had the classic sounds of 80's Prince to me. Who knows?..He still may have a new few tricks and gems hidden away. Hopefully they'll be on his next CD.

"Colonized Mind" was borrowed? I kinda got the "Jimi/Watchtower" vibe from that one.

I see what i actually wrote was that aforementioned lotusflow3r tracks are imo quality tracks - I wasn't trippin on trying to compare them to 80's tracks

Who hold authority on what is to be deemed 'better'? Music is a subjective experience. My personal favourites from the 80's were different from other people, and have changed over time. Prince's music has always divided opinion - now or then.

To resort to calling some orgers 'blinded and insular' because they don't agree with you; really?

'deep discussions of music' doesn't involve name calling in my book

Thanks for responding...

I hear you about the younger guy older mature guy perspective... I guess it's safe to say that the younger more wild guy set the bar really high for the older guy but there's a but here...

Laveuax and Sticky Like Glue were my favorites as well... Sticky Like Glue sounded like he went in with his main instruments and just made something funky and cool.

I get the impression that Prince is bored... He's been a recording artist for more than 30 years now. Here's hoping he meets someone that wants to challenge him again and they put out some raw and fresh.

If Prince really starts to focus and takes his time then he might have another great album in him. Like The Gold Experience or even better, like something from the 80s. Perhaps this album hiatus since 2010 is a good sign.

Not a chance in hell.

Prince is brilliant and driven, and those types of people don't stop until the drop.

Besides, as a live act he may be great, but as soon as he realizes that the aweful black dye job on his hair no longer give you the illusion of youth---as soon as he has wrinkles far to deep to be covering up with makeup or smoothed with botox....As soon as it's too much trouble to cover up the liver spots......His ass is going to be back in the studio full time pumping out brilliant jems.

No one's saying anything from Lotus is on par with SOTT or 1999, but it's not all dark skies either.

Lower your expectations, it's easier and more realistic.

Sure, there have been some awesome moments with Prince live lately. Still, anybody who thinks he is brilliant in concert and awful in the studio has some interesting taste.

Some of his concerts feature Shelby shouting Put Your Hands Up over 100 times, feature songs like Mountains where it is 95% the girls singing, lots and lots of cover songs where Prince is mainly dancing, and taking great songs like A Million Days and mumbling the lyrics.

Prince is usually going through the motions live since the Musicology tour.

In the studio, he continues to put out great albums that perhaps are ignored due to him having so many releases.

Of course, on this site, most people would appreciate a bad concert over a great album, because they want every album to be as good as Purple Rain. When said fan gets to the concert, they are so excited to be there, that even a bad show seems like a great one, because they can see Prince's outfits, and hair.

Don't get me wrong, a Prince concert is exciting for me, and even the lackluster ones are events. It's just this crazy idea that Prince stinks in the studio and is fantastic live is simply a haphazard opinion.

Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth, Lotus Flow3r(minus Elixer and MPLSound), and 20Ten are very well put together albums. Sure there are a few clunkers on each album save for Lotus, which is brilliant, but as a whole, those are all very listenable albums, and not one of them got a real live treatment, as Prince put on a great show for Musicology, and then slipped into this phase with tons of cover songs, and background singers taking way too much of the spotlight.

I think it’s pretty clear Prince just doesn’t care about hit studio albums anymore. Lotusflow3r could have been a huge comeback album if the best songs of the two Prince albums had been edited down to one disc and promoted heavily. 3121, Planet Earth, and 20TEN could have been huge if the arrangements had been as strong as the concert arrangements of old songs on the Musicology tour or at the Montreaux Jazz show. The skill is there, but he just isn’t trying to sell records.

Hi Jay,

Yes, I think/know he does. I'm currently listening to 'Better With Time' off of MPLsound and I think it's equally as beautiful as the other slow jams that you mentioned. That's just my opinion though.
