I realy like what he released since his "comeback in the spotlight"!!

Musicology and 3121 are among my fav Prince albums, they really have that Prince

feel we all recognize. Planet Earth and 20Ten are good albums with some great tracks.

Never really got in2 Lotusflower but some good songs, I prefer MNPLS!!! Funky!!

But although I prefer the 00-period over the 90´s, it´s a fact that his 80´s and early 90´s material

got me from the first listen. Even now when I discover an 80´s outtake it sounds right from

the first note!! Maybe because it just reminds me at a great period in my life.

Anyway, it really doesn´t matter, Rolling Stones, Metallica, George Michael and other "older" artist

released their best albums decades ago but are still better live than the hitmachines from these days.

I agree with you on all points... The older material was quirky and catchy and full of life and personality... The last 16 years or so have had some Outstanding material but as a whole have been rather disappointing for me... To your last point, music and performance isn't a competition... Prince is my guy but he appears to have lost t he magic that made songs like Power Fantastic or Another Lonely Christmas or Hello or Sign O The Times. Oh well... Thanks for sharing

Then why do so many fans insist upon comparing Prince's recent work with his past work? Why does he has to continually surpass himself to satisfy some fans? If it's not a competition then let all of his works stand on their own with lamenting about how 20ten isn't as good as 1999.

I hear you honestman... 20ten is definitely its own record but it's not a very good one by prince or any artist for that matter.

Prince has been coasting... Let's face it. He's obviously bored to tears and he's got to be since his set list has included many of thr same songs for about 8 years now... Musicology? That's funky? That was made by the same guy who recorded the extended Partyman?

Damn... He's fallen very far.

Good point HonestMan.

Prince can't win no matter what he does. If he opens a website for $77 and people don't get there t-shirt he's a money grabber. If he releases his music for free, people say 'the music isn't worth anything.' If he keeps up with the times by doing sampler sets it's no good for many Yet somehow many dance and pop hit tracks do this and it's ok, in fact it makes the music a hit often. Think of Danny Tenaglia's Sweet Dreams, Deep Dish's Flashdance and the recent house track with Dirty dancing theme sample, plus of course many more. I am so glad Prince mixes up his style. How boring. It would be like the world speaking one language!

I think categorising the forum like the general forum into politics/religion etc, would be good for Prince music.org. An 80's 90's 2000 onwards split then we can all go to the party we want to. lol

Most of world population don't even know Prince makes new music anymore. For him to make greatest hists gigs makes sense, less than half of the crowd are his obsessed fans anymore. Most of his hardcore fans don't visit the org anymore. So in a way, as some ppl here said, his current image is of an oldies act at the moment.

It's fair to say he's got nothing to prove anymore, he's even entitled not to put a new record out, and maybe we should believe what he says. Still, I don't think all that entitles him to focus on newbie records instead of working on his legacy. He still has so much to do for his own sake , but I don't think he gives a fuck at the moment.

I hope it all makes sense.

Oh you're missing the point... I'm not bashing Prince. His music is irreplaceable and holds a very special place in my life. I will continue buying his albums as I believe in supporting artists but more importantly for me, I still love hearing his music - the old stuff and thr new stuff. Do I have some gripes with a large amount of the new stuff? Sure but do I still love hearing the man play? Absolutely. Here's an example - the opening track from 20ten has some guitar work in the right channel buried deep in the mix and it is absolutely phenomenal. I still check for Prince's music for these little moments.

Inspiring thread, I really feel like going out and creating something after reading this thoughtful insightful DEEP reflection on the creative process. I'm sure Michaelangelo, Shakespeare, Warhol, and anyone who has ever endeavored in the creative process would owe you a note of gratitude. It's always the critics who iNspire artists the most, their voice is an invaluable part of bringing beauty from the imagination into this world. It reminds me of this quote I read today...

And the first rude sketch that the world had seen was joy to his mighty heart,

Till the Devil whispered behind the leaves “It’s pretty, but is it Art?”

ok, I concur with you on this point. However, as Lotusflow3r (disc 1) shows, he continues to record some gems - which can still hold up to some of his work from way back. So wouldn't go writing him off just yet wink

i like lotus and mplsound

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

See the thing is its cute people want to stay in the past where things are comfortable and cozy...but Prince does not live there anymore...why compare? What's the point? A couple of magic moments in comparison to the thousands of good songs we have....ur holding somebody at fault for not being that again. Its like making fun of someone because they are old...

You seem to forget that the org is for for the fan's POINT OF VIEWS of all facts of Prince's career. This isn't Princevault.com. You may call what you're saying a fact, but I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks it's just condescending bullshit being spewed out. Most of it being off topic. And why should I be mad when I'm pretty much happy with Prince's current music and live performances. You're the one that gripes about them each and every time you're on this site. Go ahead, cry some more. hah!

Nobody is crying but fools like you who wish Prince hadn't been so fucking awesome before you came around. Face it, what you are getting (what we are all getting right now) is milquetoast. And you'll never see the better side of that. Oh well. Cry some more. But don't act like the shit he churns out now is anywhere close to the older stuff.

That being said, I still check for every fucking thing he puts out cuz for every "Walk In Sand" is a "Future Soul Song" and that makes it all worth it to me.

How does that prove that I hate bootlegs? Illogical, much? I just meant that if people that complain about a show they went to solely because of the songs that were played is a stupid thing to judge a performence on. The person that went to the concert that could be able to experience the guitar playing, the vocal quality, the sound quality, and the energy put into a show could make a judgement on all those things. Setlists are setlists. And I don't go around making wise cracks about just anyone, because you're the only one that I find annoying doing that. If anything, you make wise cracks with just about anything with Alex as your backup cheerleader. It's kind of funny how you too show up simultaneously. Makes me wonder. lol

The point is, dispite the fact that Prince hasn't sold out all of his concerts, Prince did sell out a good majority of them. A prime example would be in the Welcome 2 Austrailia tour where he did extreamly well in a country he hasn't visited in two decades. Hell, WITH LITTLE PROMOTION.

i never said u hated bootlegs what i said was that u seem 2 have a problem anytme someone mentioned hearing a bootleg of a performance and making their own opinion of the show without 'being there" but yet regardless if someone is actuall there in person, the music is the same just in a lower volume, but the setlist is the same and the performance can be criticize the same or praised depending on the listerner's taste.

and wbat are u wondering about alex and mself? no we're not the same person we are good friends that have a lot in common. and i do consider him my brother so what are u wondering about now?

as 4 prince selling out aussie..good 4 him, nice 2 sell out venues but it would have been interesting 2 see if he did a FULL scale aussie tour. yes and not just the major cities of aussie. but hey i digress. i would like 2 see prince do japan next 4 those fans there.

Not to my ears. "Fury" had more of an "All Along The Watchtower" feel to me. Just like "Dreamer" sounds similar to "Voodoo Child", but that's just what I hear.

I think Prince has still got the goods. He's definitely held back better material. He's also thrown a few gems our way. He's coasting until he can find a better distibution vehicle for his music. He's not trying to give away his best stuff. Believe that! Right now legendary musicians make their living on the road playing arenas, theatres, casinos etc... I think he's gearing up to do battle with WB next year along with many more artists whose albums are scheduled to revert ownership the original authors. should be an interesting coming year for the 'music industry vs it's best artists'.

Yes, "Colonized Mind" was lifted off a different song - not Jimi. I don't recall right away but it's lady from the 70s.

Based on the evidence of every album he's released in recent years, I'd agree that he appears to be done as a studio act. To my ears, anyway. It has been a long time since he released an album that I could listen to all the way through, without skipping tracks. A new Prince album really used to be something to look forward to, and it would be unlike any of his other albums. I know his next album, if it appears at all, will be 60% identical cheesey ballads, 10% him telling us he's great with the remaining 30% sounding like a poor Prince impersonator.
