That's weird. 'This is...' IS what it is.... The soul song 'from the future' can't BE because it's from the future. So how can it be?

You're exactly right that these things are on Prince but why does he have to change who he is for his fans. Sometimes you outgrow an artist you loved in your youth. They don't owe you a transformation because you bought some CDs from them. We all are here as fans because we want to be but some of us are not happy being here any longer and refuse to accept what they loved is now different. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

well, I definitely have gotten older, he came to town and I really didn't go all out to go see him because I didn't want to deal with any antics, too old, just too old for it. Turns out he had a little fit and left the stage early so it was smart of me. But don't you fans think you're just as bad and narcissistic? They always say a star is a reflection of his public and if that's true you guys are jackasses too.

Sure, we are ungratful and "spoilt"... ...but it is a warped perspective. The internet has given more of a voice to the pissers and moaners. Believe it or not, many Prince fans don't come to/post at prince.org
I swear, if the internet had been around in the 80's, many fans would have bitched just as much as they do now. Maybe even more.
Can you imagine 1986 and the online fan response to the turkey that was Under The Cherry Moon? Prince would have been crucified by many online because of his seriously pandering to MTV and taking that lady to the film premiere in Sheridan Wyoming.
Can you imagine how Around the World in a Day would have been received by some of the online community of Prince fans?
Picture how Prince's religious ramblings of the 80's (speeches with God during Purple Rain tour, etc.) would have been handled by a portion of the online fanbase?
Imagine how the much of the online fanbase would have responded to shelving The Black Album and replacing it with the Lovesexy album (nude cover and all).
Imagine Prince getting slagged on by much of the online fanbase for "selling out" with Batman.
Can you even fathom how many online fans would have responded to Graffiti Bridge?

mind you, i love the guy, however his 'people' seem to suck at their jobs. his business seems to be run by kids, fingerpainting on a bathroom wall. god bless them all but if i had a nickel for each time there has been a show screw up, a ticketing screw up, a mis-announcement, a misrepresentation and/or a failure to deliver..... well, i'd have pocketful of change. many artists do not put their fans though such hell and also berate us. with prince there always seems to be drama and very little in the way of clear, sensible communication. he seems to at times really resent us as a whole. which is part of the mystery that draws us in. but from a practical standpoint, he's lucky we're so loyal

F that!! Tell you what. How bout he does continue releasing new music for those of us that want it, and since you do not want it, you don't buy it. That way everybody's happy. Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

That where people show that they can't control their own impulses and feel compelled to buy everything Prince does even though they lost interest ages agos. Then we have to sift through 'he's lost it', 'he's not funky' threads. very well put. It's just a lot more visible now. I really do think we just need to look at the fans of so many other well established artists out there. Jeeze, look at the Bowie community - they just don't know what kind of health he is, G.Michael - having to watch this car crash career every few months etc. As I said, regardless of what I think about the quality of his output [especially on CD] I ma just pleased that there is always something going on with him and there is rarely any a dull moment. God forbid though that the org should be some purple utopia where it's all rosey in the purple garden !.

probably not though
It was different times. People's mindset were different. Complaining is complaining no matter the internet. The generations were different then vs now the superstardom of that time was something very new and we were definately bombarded in a good way with music videos pictures and shows. Times were just different then from now

Thanks for fighting the good fight man. Its all in vain however. Some of these folks are just the worst kind of fanatics ever. The ones that can't seem to let go even though everything Prince does or doesn't do seems to cause them heartache. Really quite a few could use some counseling to get to the root of their problems.
Reading all the complaints I always get the feeling that they at one point viewed Prince as some sort of God. And once he started diverging from what ever path they thought he should be on all they have for him is disdain.
Folks Prince is going to continue to change and get old. He will never live up to your most treasured memory. Its not possible. Some of us are mature and dare I say sane enough not to bothered because we don't find version #26 of "Days of Wild" to be as funky as say version number #11.
Its simply insane to think that Prince has to continually meet your expectations and exceed today what he did yesterday.
There is absolutely nothing that Prince can do to please some of you.

Of course he was a god, tricky99, a musical god.
I stopped buying his new music after Rave. I listen to every new thing 'in the hope of'. But alas. If he had died after recording tracks for the Gold Experience (some of which ended up on Crystal Ball), then we would still worship him today.
Almost everything after that has been absolute crap. If you enjoy his new music: fine, of course. But I'm sorry, it just doesn't compare. Coupled with the fact that has done more interviews from the mid-nineties on, and 'used' those mainly to portray himself as a complete idiot (before we could say: oh, it's just a very clever mystique he's building up blabla; now we know he should do some serious shrink-time)... AND because he puts a lot of his strange views into his lyrics, it makes it really hard to have any love for him. Stop the Prince Apologists ™

I don't know if people were under the influence of something when they listened to early Prince or went to concerts. Up to 22 years ago I listened under the influence to Prince. But it doesn't affect how I listen/hear Prince now.
Perhaps the haterade-holics, and naysayers should stop saying 'Prince's music & talent has changed' but rather 'I have changed'. That is why their experience is no longer the same.

I think you're wrong. All of the things Skywalker mentioned caused him to lose 'casual' fans. I have no doubt that some of the things he said (religious ramblings), did (Lovesexy cover, Graffiti Bridge) would have caused a firestorm if the net & the org were around. Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

No you have that wrong. I don't need people to die to appreciate them for who they are. I have always understood that Prince is a man who will change and age and thrill and disapoint. Anyone among us that didn't realize that Prince was fairly strange from get go is a liar. I don't need for Prince to mirror my beliefs and values. That's why he is Prince and I am myself.
I find it odd that people hold on to the notion that someone as musically evolving as prince would always be on the same page with any particular listeners taste. That is just boggles my mind. As many twists and turns in Prince music to devalue is output as "absolute crap" is just disingenuous. You my not like what he does but that's no reason to dismiss it as "absolute crap".
If Prince is producing "absolute crap" then what do you term all the inferior music that others are producing? It's the extremes that bother me.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
To appreciate them for what they are? No, dying would have prevented him shaming his legacy by putting out what he puts out today.
Yes, absolute crap. Music without any soul to/in it. And sure, there are artists who release worse music. And luckily there are many artists who release really good music.
And to incorporate what Bohemian said: Yes, I have changed. But so has Prince. And so has his music. [Edited 6/15/12 8:49am] [Edited 6/15/12 8:50am] Stop the Prince Apologists ™

nobody thought prince was god .. he was just good
the fans didn't grow up and change .. prince old music still strikes the right nerve .. the new music does not
prince didn't grow either .. i guess we can't expect him to .. but instead he got more immature .. who woulda thought?
the infuriating part for a person who still has interest in prince .. and roots for his success .. is how simple it would be for him to change a few little things that tend to ruin his music
namely lyrics and delivery
aside from some clunky drumming and not great sounds, the music isn't that bad .. its just the rapping and horrible horrible lyrics
unfortunately as much as people claim to like the "beat" or guitar solo or tightness or whatever bunch of shit .. the only thing that really matters in a song are the lyrics and melody .. when u shit all over that with rapping and horrible lyrics there really is nothing left to connect to
the sad reality is that prince is spoiled and ungrateful .. he is still writing songs that say .. look how great i am .. like a spoiled little shit who can't quite understand why nobody wants to buy his records anymore .. its just gets more and more annoying to listen to each time around
if he appreciated his fans .. and the millions and millions they have spent to support his spoilt lifestyle .. we'd get a really moving record .. but it hasn't happened for such a long time .. it's just sad .. prince fans hang on out of compassion and hope he'll snap out of it .. at this point with the prince name back .. the tour support .. the proven ability to work with a rec company again and the fact that he sleeps on a matress made of money .. he should be able to give the fans something beyond what is basically a calling card for his next female aquisition ..
i also think he either has a booze or pill problem we all don't know about .. either that or his bands really did write all his good music .. maybe both

OFFS, although I like you I find it annoying and disrespectful that you answer to a post that stands up for your beliefs but do not engage in answering the questions posed in mine, where I took the time to address the issues you raised. It was theh same in the earlier TRC conversial thread a while back, where contenders never answered the questions. No one here is in a court of law, but at least provide arguements if such disingeuous statements are made. (Thank-you Tricky99)
Pentacle: You say you have changed. You say Prince has changed. Is it not normal if Prince has changed that his music would change? And if you have changed, is it not normal that your tastes have changed and quite frankly, that you and Prince's paths when it comes to music have diverged? Does all that just culminate to the judgment that the music is now 'crap?' It seems rather superficial thinking to me. Well if that's true that answers everything about these fans' attitudes. Though the anti-group is very splintered with different opinions all over the place, so lack of consistency.
Prince didn't grow? Well maybe not in height we shrink in old age but to say Prince hasn't grown is not even worth discussing.
All the things you say about the music makes me realise that there are people on this board who are probably ex-band members, or people involved with Prince musically at a certain stage. Perhaps their fame was only their time with Prince and with the proven inability on this board for people to self-reflect, it's quite possible many of the naysayers seek revenge in their lack of success by continually being derogatory about any music of Prince past 'their in it' era.
Could you name all these songs please, and I'll give you a list where he doesn't.
I hate to break it to you....but those millions you imagine actually supported the corporate executives more so probably than Prince.
My third comment addresses this.

Frankly, I tend to just skip your posts. They are almost always negative and beyond that I get the distinct impression that you have well "issues".
You called him spoiled and ungrateful but u appear to be the one with entitlement issues. You want him to tweak his music to fulfill your idea of what "good" music is. That on its face is insane. Either you like what you hear or you don't but to expect some other person who doesn't know you from a hole in the ground to somehow reach in your brain and base his music on what u find acceptable is bat shit insane.
We as listeners only have two options listen or don't. Those are the only options. that you continue to subject yourself to the horrors of Prince's music says something about your mentality. That you think Prince owes you something is very strange. He produces music and you choose to listen or pay for it. That is all of the relationship you have with him. Anything else is something just happening in your head

why does it have to be so personal. Why does it have to lead of with like or not like? Can't we disagree on this topic & hear each other, and on a totally different topic be in total agreement without it being like or not like?
To be annoyed and feel disrespect is going to far don't you think. I thought the post was funny, which I told him on the side note.
I did read your post, but when I did it was at the end of my work day and thought I would when I got home, since your post had more to answer or respond too. I got home took a nap and ended up working outside in my garden till about 9pm then the neighbors brought over some blueberry dumplings, we sat on the porch talked then I went in played with my kitten, took a shower and went to bed.

this is funny .. i am super flattered that you even imply my stance has is because perhaps i worked with prince at some time .. thanks!!!
i am certain prince reads the org .. and the rest is just for the sake of musical and career debate .. which i find endlessly entertaining
and whatever is left is for the sake of honest objective critique of a former master at work .. the lunacy of fans accepting this mans work at his laziest annoys me .. i don't believe for a second that his new work would merit his fan base .. he would be broke and flippin veggie burgers at the coop like the rest of us
i am passionate about getting prince to up his game .. in fact we should all up our game .. usa is too fuckin lazy and its art blows ..
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
actually we as listeners have other options .. we can give feedback .. and yes the internet has afforded fan access to the actual performers like never before .. it's not unreasonable to think each person can have influence .. prince would do well to heed some feedback .. he has good ideas but keeps ruining them .. and he has noone in his band who will give him honest feedback .. either that or they actually like when prince raps .. which does not bode well either ..
some of us don't want prince to be a fucking joke anymore .. assless pants joke is fine .. name change joke is fine .. but musical joke is not acceptable .. and with each record prince tries to make himself more and more musically irrelevant .. and embarrassing .. i want to know why .. its a fact and its a sad fact .. we as prince fans owe it to prince to help him gain respect again .. not the prince WAS great respect but just ignore the last 20 years .. but real respect .. so that his name means something again .. prince fans have spoilt prince and i am just saying .. stop spoiling prince assholes .. you are ruining the music because he actually thinks his rapping and lite jazz is good and its not .. you know damn well in a few years you wont be listening to anything but the wb catalog .. stop lying to prince and yourself

The bottom line is Prince doesn't have to change for ayone other than Prince. The same way any individual will only change for themselves. Spending money on a CD doesn't entitle any of us to a say on how an artist creates their art. We can only get our message across by not supporting the art they create that doesn't move us. Prince fans seem to be hellbent on supporting an artist they don't like any longer and then blaming him for their continued support. If Prince did have an account on here it's pretty easy for him to see that even his strongest detractors still follow his every move if only to throw shade on it and ff that's the case then he's obviously doing something right. Why would someone spend countless hours following someone they don't like, appreciate and still care about? When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

You really do have an inflated opinion of yourself don't you? I imagine Prince raps because he likes to rap. That is his choice. I do not begrudge him that option whether I love it or hate it. We all have opinions (and they cover the entire spectrum) so why would/should Prince pay attention to you when Sally or Kenny have completely other views? You have a delusion that what you think matters to Prince when in reality you are just another nut in the peanut gallery yelling at him.
You should be much more concerned about your own legacy then Prince's. How many more awards and hit records would it take for his legacy to be fine in your book? What if the next record you absolutely love and the rest of us say its "pure shit"?
I have to varying degrees found enjoyment in every album Prince has produced. So why do you feel the need to speak for everybody when in fact your opinion is just that one person's opinion? There is something very twisted about trying pigeon hole anybody creatively. Prince simply isn't your taste anymore. The problem is completey yours.
