Prince should release a pretend “demo version” of this FD joke to suggest that all St Paul did was re-record the joke according to Prince’s guide vocals. The wooh is on the one!

^ A little cruel imo
I'll say again, as I did on their Facebook feed - their response was very risky - p will either sit up and appreciate their 'fighting talk' or any hopes they ever had for settling old scores have been well and truly scuppered for good.
I admire this 'David v Goliath' 'battle' but they could live to regret it. As you say they are little known and this could perceived as seriously sour grapes on their part. We all know the history of the original Paul falling out. FDeluxe did have some support from a section of P's fanbase - will this play out to their advantage, or will some of their 'fans' lose respect for them over this....?
Be interesting to see how this unfolds. As you say Prince and the NPG are off to tour Australia in mere days - listening to the recent Peach and Black podcast it sounds like P has some great stuff ready to unleash over there, and an interview from him is imminent. 'd wager that this W2Australia leg is gonna be a resounding success.
What are FDeluxe doing next besides enjoying a renewed profile on the back of the Prince 'Mutiny' 'gift'...........

Ahahahaha!
I'm sorry, but this is the truest post here.
I'm not one for insults, but i can't argue with any of this.
If you truly think Fdeluxe have done better material or delivered a clever response that's gonna harm Prince in any way...then you're deluded and desperate (due to your own bizarre fetish) to see him get knocked down.
Fdeluxe calling a quick, momentary Prince track "jingle worthy" is the equivalent of an Orger saying the same thing because....as said above, no one knows who you are outside of the Org.
Prince's off the cuff rehearsal response was clever enough to gain thought from us and the band. This "response" is just an outright thoughtless joke, even though i agree in that critique of the song.
Prince doesn't need to respond to this joke put forth by fanatics.

what are they trying to say with this? are they being humorous or are they taking a swipe at prince or what now? fdeluxe or The Family are not shit, cudos to them, but if they are having a go at prince i don't know as princes biggest fan i don't want that because i am a bit sensitive, ok hot summer is not the best of his songs, i don't even like his 20ten album for that matter. but i don't go around poking fun at prince by distorting his creations, even if it is just a joke. call me humorless. and if prince wants them to perform as an opening act why don't they? whatever is going on between fdeluxe and prince why is it being publicised?

LOL how are you going to try and clown your creator
The song that's being parodied may or may not be dubious but the person who wrote it is responsible for your entire professional existence. It's a lose-lose situation for FD.
(cue the 'they are just as great on their own!' delusional faction) "Climb in my fur."

Some of you always have to read too much into every damn situation. Jesus.
Prince makes a joke reminding fDeluxe/O7 that he is "the creator". fDeluxe makes a joke in return that one of Prince's recent songs sounds like a jingle for a store.
That's all there is to it. Prince doesn't need defending if you don't agree with fDeluxe's joke and fDeluxe don't need defending if you don't agree with what Prince did.
Can we please not turn this into another 20+ page slagging match....... please? |

I finally understand the fight and discussion... At first I never understood it, because I didn't hear the song/commercial they made. LOL
I heard the song, and it's pretty funny..IS that Eric Leeds? Hahaha
I honestly think Prince is a humorous person, and he won't take this seriously. He probably laughed it off. Knowing Prince, he could come back with something extremely funky..AND I want that! Haha (But that is when he is PISSED off, not made fun of in a comical 30 second commercial..lol)
He responds best when he is pissed off. So they should have went further to downplay another one of his songs that they thought was a 'Nice little Jingle" so that he really got angry. Hahaha.
He probably laughed this one off, I doubt he was angry or felt provoked by a 30 second commercial which poked fun of 'Hot Summer'. We all know he made that song up, in 2 hours max. Haha. That is not a song any of us should take seriously..Prince doesn't always take songs like this seriously. IMO. It would be different if they choose a popular song or something lol/.
This was a cool dig and response to what Prince in Mutiny/Ice Cream Castles..lol.
BUT in order to really PISS him off, make fun out of some other songs that would hit lower. Make front of his band or something? Hahaha..(I am not suggesting a disrespect of Prince and his legacy because he has really nothing to prove.) We all know Prince is more capable, and I would consider him one of the besst live acts now as well. Not to mention artist! He stands tall!
He responds best when he is pissed off.lol. He talked about it on Tavis Smiley; how he does get angry but he just channels that through his music. He makes that bass and guitar angry! I want that! I want them to piss him off she he can churn out something super funky and dark.
So let's piss him off..in a massive way!
But not disrespectful to his legacy....Hahahaha
I mean we all know that without Prince; who would even know about them? Or any of his associated artists..they respect and love him. This is just all for jokes..
BUT if you want to get serious,..You got to go harder than this..lol. So that Prince can go harder and respond with a fight! It's Button Therapy, Baby!

When I first heard of the dig on FDeluxe and the Time, you could see this coming from a mile away.
It's all in fun. But if you are going to tease, get ready to be teased back.

Whether or not this is some gimmick to gather attention, I do see Prince having a sense of humor about it. I guess I'm one in the minorities who like Hot Summer. May not be his best but it sounds better than just about everything on the radio these days.

Ditto for the O7 single. It's nice!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
anyway, I don't fully understand why prince sending Mutiny is a dig against fdeluxe. Anyone care to explain that?
Is it Prince responding directly to their request to open for him, and he's saying, 'no thanks, i've already got these songs (MY songs) taken care of... don't need anyone else to play em...' ? Or is there something about the song Mutiny specifically?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Ummm you really shouldn't be sensitive about this, to various degrees they 'know' Prince, you don't
I think this is similar to what Prince did with band members and proteges back in the 80's
I think it's fun back in forth and possibly an extended hand from Prince
Sheila E did a similar vid response to Prince's Purple & Gold song a year or 2 ago
It's being publicized because Prince did it thru DrFunk... didn't you read the original posts

yeah you probably are in the minority of minorities
Purple & Gold Rich Friends Hot Summer (sad)
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I like Hot Summer, actually blasted it at work today. Rich Friends doesn't do anything for me. Purple & Gold is bad but I keep it in the context that it was written for a sports team and probably would've never been heard outside of a football game if it wasn't by Prince. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Sadly, I was aware of Purple & Gold and Hot Summer but couldn't remember that I'd actually heard Rich Friends. I so wish I could still say that! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

oh i get the joke now. damn they got Prince back good!
Unless I'm missing something I dont' think its risky unless FDeluxe wanted to open up for Prince, and that come back Prince jab was not planned or expected by Prince, then they could forget it!

Hello Folks, just to clarify.
1. fDeluxe was not offended by Prince's email, he was staking at his territory with a musical piece of subtle sledging so we returned the favour. It's all a bit of fun. Nothing more than that.
2. The band is not doing this for the money ... Lord knows none of us could pay our mortgages if we put all our eggs into the fDeluxe basket so to speak. All of us are friends having a bit of fun playing, making and marketing music on our terms.
3. Yes, we realise the band is known mainly to devotees of Prince but we are doing all we can to expand our fanbase. That's not easy in 2012 but hey, you gotta be in it to win it.
4. Are fDeluxe supporting Prince in Oz. No. But if they ask and contracts were presented we'd be there in a heartbeat if the deal made sense, just as we would if it was any high profile act who plays in front of a large audience.
5. Are we touring more. yes. Stay tuned for more news - possibly some co-bills with some old friends, possibly some with new friends.
Always interesting to log in and read the comments whichever side of the fence they sit.
BTW, here's some press on the album:
“From the skintight beats of Gaslight’s opening track, Drummers and Healers, fDeluxe’s supremely taut and sensual soul is not only intact, it’s rejuvenated. The former disciples of the elfin one have returned, 25 years wiser, to make a statement — self-produced, selfreleasedand one of the most exciting records I’ve heard this year.” Paul Sexton, The Sunday Times
“Gaslight makes one thing resoundingly clear: with Prince nowhere in sight, fDeluxe have created a far more absorbing and multi-layered album than anything the man himself has put his name to for at least a decade.” Echoes (UK)
“A split from their royal ruler may have caused a name change but this display of sophisticated jazz and subtle funk shows they’re more than court rejects.” The Daily Mirror (UK)
“A perfectly distilled dose of funk and modern soul that lights up your brain like a pinball machine from the first beat.” Guitarist Magazine
“Gaslight is a confident, smoothly funky return that shows off the band’s impressive musical chops” Metro (UK)
“The combination of Susannah Melvoin’s winsome vocals, Paul Peterson’s muscular bass lines, Jellybean Johnson’s searing rock-inflected guitar and saxophonist Eric Leeds’ jazzy, bebop-inflected riffing creates a funk and soul experience that is singular, wonderful and sometimes transcendent.” Black Sheep Mag (UK)
“fDeluxe have produced a fine album that stylistically sits comfortably alongside the original 1985 album and yet which is far from being a dated museum piece. The Minneapolis funk element is still present, but there's a strong, almost palpable, contemporary vibe, which means that 'Gaslight' isn't an empty exercise in retro nostalgia. ” Charles Waring, SoulandJazzandfunk.com
“Gaslight"… is both a continuation of the Family and a journey in new directions. In other words, it's got plenty of sanctified funk, dreamy pop, soulful duets and jazzy saxophone.” Minneapolis Star-Tribune
“'Gaslight' is an exciting epic that boldly defies convention.” PennyBlackMusic
“Great album!” Peter Young, Jazz FM
“This return finds the original four piece on impressively supple, sophisticated and funk fired form.” Uncut
“Peterson, Melvoin, saxophonist Eric Leeds and drummer Jellybean Johnson have made a record of jazzy, funky pop, revisiting the Minneapolis sound of the '80s while also moving forward.” AOL Spinner
“The first and hopefully not only album by the group is full of old-fashioned good-listening funk that never sounds dated.” BN/DeStem (The Netherlands)
“Gaslight is a triumphant and welcome return for fDeluxe!” PopBlerd
“The band is fDeluxe. The album is Gaslight. They used to be The Family, who recorded "Screams of Passion" and the original version of "Nothing Compares to You." Saw them at Joe's Pub. St. Paul Peterson, Susannah Melvoin, Jellybean Johnson and Eric Leeds are fDeluxe, vets of a gang of great Minneapolis bands (The Time, Madhouse) and more. Great musicians playing funk ass music. That's a movement I support. This has not been a paid promotional announcement.” Nelson George, acclaimed Music and Culture Critic/Producer (Chris Rock, Show American Gangster, VH1’s Hip Hop Honors & more)
