I was reading the other thread about the unreleased version of this song featuring the New Power Trio. I'd LOVE to hear that version!

But, yeah, anyway...

Why is this song ignored so much on the org? I mean, even his HARDCORE fanbase seem to have almost no regard for this song, and the ones who do recognise it seem to hate it. I, for one, think it's amazing! It's dark, it's beautiful and it's so far removed from Prince's usual sound. I think it was a bold move releasing this track.

Back to the ? though... DOES anyone like this song? At ALL?!

No you're not. I think it's a nice, ambient, emotional tune.

I like it too! His vocals are amazing and the lyrics are so sad! I'm glad it's as short as it is, because if it was longer, it might not keep my attention.

Yes, I like it but dont often listen to it. It's great to listen to in the car when it is lightly raining. It has an Asian feel to it. Didnt David Henry Hwang write the lyrics?

I have always really liked Solo although it's not difficult to

see why other people wouldn't.

With the heavy echo on his vocal I tend to picture him singing

in the dark empty church that he is posed in front of on the

cover of the album. Like he's to the point where he doesn't

know where else to go to save himself.

The Come album came out (ha) right after Prince chnaged his

name and I remember listening to Solo for the first time and as

the song was winding down and he was saying:

"so.... low.....

my name..........

is..........."

and for that second I was sitting there staring at the speakers

thinking: what's he gonna say what's he gonna say he name is....

and then of course it was "noone" which after a minute I was like

yeah ok that's low. But it didn't really have anything to do with his

name change.

I don't know if you are or aren't, but this further illustrates my point about Prince's body of work: There is NO song he's ever recorded that at least one person doesn't think is brilliant.

That's the beauty of art.

And it's also why I think all these "Is X the worst/best song Prince has ever recorded?" threads are absolutely pointless.

I always liked Solo BUT also felt that it didn't quite hit the mark, that he was overreaching or something. Could've been better if he wasn't trying so hard...

I always thought he was trying to match "As Yet Untitled" from TTD's frst album (which is funny coz that itself is a bit of a wankfest). There was a story of him calling TTD over at a club and saying: "You're a poet", or something. Although, since he didn't write the lyrics to Solo, this may not fit...

BTW, is that his first (acknowledged) recording with lyrics he didn;t write?

I love it too. I heard it live at Paisley Park in 1994, don't know that it has ever been played live again.

i love it ( along with MOST of the "COME" cd). His vocals, the emptiness of the song, the harps, the thunder sounds...hauntingly beautiful.

You're not the only one. I think 'Solo' is ... 'interesting' to say the least

I've searched ENDLESSLY on the web for a live version, but to no success...

So what's it like? Is it as good/better/worse than the studio version? I NEED to know lol!
