Come on now..in certain circles (i.e. non whitebread america), Rick is a god and certainly no one hit wonder. He has at least 3 or 4 classic records...Come n Get It, Bustin Out, Street Songs, and Cold Blooded..Im not even going to talk about Throwin Down, or him saving Motown from 1978 on, having hits with Eddie, Mary jane Girls, Teena, The Temptations (The Tempations!), Smokey, etc etc.

We all know his foibles and missteps, and how Prince passed him up in the long run

But lets stop with this revisionist history of Rick not counting at all

Ha! first, when he was sitting at his buduoir(sp?) he was making P's facial expressions like from purple rain when appolonia got on the back of his motorcycle e.g that pouting face. Secondly, he got the ruffles down his shirt, maybe that was tradition then but his outfit looks like P coulda wore it right? EVEN DOWN TO THE DAMN SHOES MATCHING! I think Rick was loud and flamboyant and prince was reserved and he took that as standoff-ish. In Ricks mind (s) lol , I think he thought " If this little MF could do it, I can do it better." Then it's that supposed rumor that the former Vanity came with James and left with Prince. If that's not a slap in a face to a mans pride , I don't know what is. You know? THEN, and yes there's another 'then' I think he saw P as competition in those times and supposedly he had a girl band first then P ripped him off with Vanity 6. Lastly, they COULD have been friends had P changed his lifestyle by doing drugs and was wasted all the time or vice versa. Their both competitive. Who knows? Now, I know to myself to be true that James stuff is fonky ( It can make you dance or wiggle and jiggle that fat whatevers your preference). Its not about crack per se. He was quite successful before he got REAL caught up. But like he said, he was dark skinnned and aggressive. That didn't play to the MTV crowd back then as much as Princes' steez. I mean some of Prince's trappings were more palatable to the general music buying public. Prince also went left while Rick was steady in the rnb lane. So while his drug use didn't help his creativity and career, there were also other things at play regarding the rise and fall of those two punk funkers imo.

Wouldn't be surprised if those two were fuck buddies at some point. Slick Rick was catching feelings till he died.

Exactly. Pop fans only know Rick for "Super Freak". Funk and R&B fans know him for his stuff both before and after it. He came out hard right from the very beginning with successful and popular jams such as "You And I" and "Mary Jane" from his first album, "Bustin' Out" from his second album, and "Love Gun", "Fire It Up", and "Come Into My Life" from his third album. All this occurred before Prince opened on tour for him. If he weren't a success, he would have been Prince's opening act, not the other way around. "Big Time" was another hot one after that tour ended and all this was before "Street Songs" was even released which contained "Super Freak" which became a crossover hit.

After the success of "Street Songs", he continued on with more hot ones from his next album such as "Dance Wit Me", "Hard To Get", "69 Times", "Standing On The Top" and the album after that with "Cold Blooded" and "U Bring The Freak Out" and "17" which was a new song on a greatest hits album after that. He didn't really start falling until 1985 with the "Glow" album.

And all that was just his solo career, not to mention his side projects The Mary Jane Girls and The Stone City Band albums and producing stuff with Kleeer, or recording with The Temptations and Chaka Khan.

Rick had a lot of phlegm in his throat. I keep wanting him to cough or hack up a loogie listening to that interview.
