I think there were a lot of middle of the road tunes on Diamonds and Pearls that are BORING or just sound generic.
Walk don't Walk Strolling Live For Love
I think Slow Love is boring on the SOTT album.
I was never excited by the album version of "Baby I'm a Star" and much preferred the weird conceptual "I Would Die 4 U". Live it's something exciting though, as he changes it up, and adds all kinds of fun parts and jams.
I'm bored by "And God Created Women"... its just too normal.
I like the more strange Prince songs, the more creative ones, unless the melody is just great like "Purple Rain" or "Old Friends for Sale" or the lyrics are great.
And actually as a b-side, I was always bored by "Girl" compared to Shockadelica or Another Lonely Christmas or God or Irresistible Bitch or She's always in My Hair.

I would have to say one of the worst most boring songs I've ever heard Prince put out is "Resolution" on the end of the Planet Earth album. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I really live Let Me Feel You Up. Such a catchy song & doesn't get spoken about much. Peace in the House of Prince.

I can't sit all the way through the Cloreen Bacon Skin. I think it's boring, it should have been shorter and I don't get the humor. The Prince worst song I can think of actually.

Oh sorry I must have read the op wrong, we were supposed to put the ones we dont like? I can't stand Alphabet Street - the song gives me the biggest headache Peace in the House of Prince.

Cinnamon Girl sounds so terribly dated and sub-par.
Life of the party is such a horrible horrible track, a cringeworthy attempt to create a party jam.

Walk don't Walk Strolling Live For Love I have to disagree with you. I realize it's just opinion but there is nothing generic or boring about any of those songs. They sound like nothing he had done previously. Not necessarily his best work but certainly not generic, in my opinion.

Strolling?neither boring nor generic. I find little red corvette boring however in the same token i recognise its utter brilliance

nurse lawson,
Little Red Corvette is one of P's 'tipping point of genius' songs. I couldn't agree with you (& berlinas2k) more about Strollin'.

I couldn't agree more about "Resolution." It's not a particularly bad song, but very unremarkable and forgettable.

I can´t listen to those songs. Boring, generic, repetitive, uninspired, lame.

If Prince did a song in the exact vein as Hound Dog by Elvis, it might be unique to Prince's public output, bit it would not be unique to the world. It would still be old and done before.
These songs sound to me like anyone could have made them up. They don't sound like unique Prince songs, they sound super conservative and grandpa friendly in each one's core concept and structure and lyric. Dionne Warwick could have put out "Strolling" way back. Rush could have put out a song like "Live for Love" way back (out of these three "Live For Love" is the most interesting, but I still think it's a bit dead by Prince standards), and you could have heard "Walk Don't Walk" in any generic children's show in the 70's (but that one does have creative production on top of the conservative song idea)
The embellishing production choices on Walk don't Walk and Live For Love are a bit more creative (and more of what I like about Prince), but there's no hope for Strolling... it's completely conservatively generic in all ways to my ears.
But you're right it's all opinion and subjective to each unique listener's internal needs and stored library of music is. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Some of the most hated songs like "Jughead" "Life of the Party" or "Grafitti Bridge" or "Everybody Loves Me" are still creative and interesting in my opinion compared to something as boring to my ears as "Strolling" or "Resolution". People seem to not comment that "Jughead" follows the the same core structure as "Housequake". It's almost like a remake and D&P disguise slapped on.
I like this thread because it is the few average songs that I don't appreciate. I'd rather have a crazy "Wedding Feast" then something unremarkable. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I love "Cloreen Baconskin" because it's got a wicked funky groove that sound unlike anything I've heard anyone else put out, creative vocals and crazy humor, and it's such a creative slap to just put a long, raw, improvised take of clowning around as a cut on an album. I love that attitude. Besides "The Undertaker" this track is what Prince would sound like if he was a garage band next door to you. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I know I've heard these songs in the past, but besides TGRTEBS, I can't remember any of them...so that's a damn good list!

I kind of agree with this analysis and I think he purposely made the songs to sound 'ordinary' as possible (for a Prince song that is) to increase record sales.

You're right, I think he did try to make some more listener friendly conservative material. I remember that friends of mine complaining about the Sign o' the Times album as being too weird, and not as fun as Janet Jackson's album.I think Prince was trying to counter the reputation of being a weird artist, and wanted to showcase that he could make songs your grandma would like too.
Some younger people today started and ended on Prince from Diamonds and Pearls days, and he suprisingly has a rated G image to them (in terms of song intensity and explicit material). They are surprised to learn about why there are parental warnings on albums (Purple Rain album and Gore), and don't even realize that Prince used to cuss up a storm.
I remember one friend of mine hearing "Days of Wild" and saying, it's really weird to hear Prince cuss! I was like, "What??"
Prince has the craziest image problems of any pop personality I know. Problems as in misinterpretations and wrong impressions. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Thats what is crazy in all this but it makes sense. I think Prince realized he did himself a disservice with the crazy clothes and risque stage shows and songs as it took away from his credibility as a song writer. His shit was so out there that folks forgot that he could belt out /write a tune that sounds classic in the great american tradition as a Porter, Young, etc etc. So he ended up with that. He wanted all to come and see him..young and old, and especially folks with THEIR kids. I mean I guess it happens to us all and artists, espcially rock stars. They want to have everyone come and join in. Im not sure its only that they realize there's a market they were/are missing (which means less moola for them, 'that Duran Duran money') or something else such as a "see people..see what I can do too..Im not just Computer Blue with Wendy giveng me said head" vibe.
Thsis is why I said that whole Uptown ideal was bullshit. He was being phony. "Climb in my fur."

I understand why a lot of people dislike it and find it very boring. I really, really do.
But I love that song!
Such a feelgood, sunny, innocent song about strolling in the park, eating icecream, skating, doing silly stuff. Love it. It kind of brings a bit of sunshine into my apartment. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

For me, "Until U're in My Arms Again" definitely falls into that bland, uninspired category.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Exactly. It is extremely repetitive and I can see why people might find it boring but it has a great groove and Prince and Morris ride it for the whole fifteen minutes.
Still, ever since I first heard "U Gotta Shake Something" I have wished that he had included it instead of "Cloreen Bacon Skin." As a fifteen minute jam I believe that more people would be able to appreciate it.
