One of the things that I appreciate about Prince is that even in his "bad" songs there is almost always something that I can latch on to and dig.

eek at this thread.

The NPGMC material would fall into that category for the most part. Mostly due to the lack of energy in the production. But then again, he must have realized they weren't that great as he didn't get them pressed on a disc.

One might not like songs like "Planet Earth" or "All The Midnights In The World", but they're hardly generic.

Agreed. There are very few of those tracks that I really enjoy. Still, I do wish that the Chocolate Invasion seven disc box set had come to fruition. It would be nice to have that material on an officially released disc. I think the fact that it is/was only available as downloads adds to its reputation as being very disposable.

woah, most of the npgmc material was interesting to my ears and didn't seem lazy! I just came across a bunch of them on a cd in the car and put it on, and it was cool.

I find a few lazy tracks on most all his official albums (including the sacred 80's albums that are canonized here).

I think Planet Earth and All the Midnights defintely fall into the interesting category. Actually to me everything but the last two tracks on Planet Earth worked. Although I think I do get bored with Chelsea Rogers quickly... so I'll put that into the indifferent lazy category.

Totally agree with these. Absolutely drab, paint-by-numbers makeout gospel soul.

I'd also add Hot Wit U, which sounds like a sports drink commercial.

Im saying. His NPGMC (rip) material such as C Invasion etc was kind of out there style...which was his style. No traditional sounds and music overall.

"When eye lay my hands on u" and "Supercute" are killer tracks that would've deserved to be released and promoted properly.

Oh, and I like "Silicon" also very much.

Some of the most hated songs like "Jughead" "Life of the Party" or "Grafitti Bridge" or "Everybody Loves Me" are still creative and interesting in my opinion compared to something as boring to my ears as "Strolling" or "Resolution". People seem to not comment that "Jughead" follows the the same core structure as "Housequake". It's almost like a remake and D&P disguise slapped on.

I like this thread because it is the few average songs that I don't appreciate. I'd rather have a crazy "Wedding Feast" then something unremarkable.

It's so interesting to see so many different opinions about Prince songs. You really shocked me wheny ou mentioned you don't like Strollin'! I love Strollin'! It's such a bluesy chill song! It makes my day bright! Haha I could do without Resolution, but I listened to it today! Haha..It's COOL! But a BAD way to end 'Planet Earth'.

TO ME, there is NOTHING interesting about 'Life Of The Party' I mean where does it go? NO WHERE..The lyrics are whack, and it seems desperate in making someone party! I love Graffiti Bridge!! Haha, as far as, 'Everybody Loves Me'...I respect it, because it's one of his best attempts recently at sticking to the old MPLSound, He should have released it on 'MPLSound'

Jughead, is cool . I don't listen to it though, because it reminds me of a bad demo. Hahahaha

Wedding Feast can't even be a song can it? Haha, whatever it is..I like it. Haha

As much as I love Prince, they're song I can definitively wish he never released.

Such As:

Life Of The Party....SO BAD! feeling ill It's one of his worst, it goes no where, and as I said earlier..Sounds as a desperate attempt to make someone party. Much worst, the title.

There'll Never Be Another Like Me - This is just remarkably disgusting! The only cool thing about it, are the drums at the end. Everything before and between is a train wreck...The lyrics are trash, and it's just from the same family as Life Of The Party. Desperate and weak! Also, it's too LONG! Haha

Everyday Is A Winding Road - That's just a MESS! This is a song, that really embarrasses me. Haha

Baby I'm A Star - It's Not a bad song but I don't know why he performs it now, it's a song he should just skip over. It just goes no where..and it sounds like a B-Side. Not worthy of all the love it gets IMO. headache

Until U're In My Arms Again - Plastic R&B...Also it sounds like a Disney song, which isn't bad, Because I love 'The Arms Of Orion' But this is just boarder line wrong. Haha doh!

I Rock, Therefore I Am - The only thing about this song that's cool is the guitar, everything else is a mess too many things going on at one time.

Da, Da, Da - Why did he seriously release this? It's a troubled mix. Emancipation Disc III would have saved itself IF it wasn't for this.

They're songs where Prince would do better keeping to himself. These are some that come to my mind. lol

I'm looking at the track titles of "The Chocolate Invasion" and "Slaughterhouse" sets and see very little that would stick out as very out of ordinary. Some of the material from this era has some of Prince's own trademark quirkiness on them, but in overall most of those songs have the production style of the pop / R&B music of the time period they came out. Multitracked vocals, plodding tempos, plastic sounding VA synthesizers...

I'm not sure why he even spent the time finishing tracks like "Golden Parachute", "Silicon" or "Props'n'Pounds". Hard to see what he got out of those sessions himself.

Then we have a difference of opinion because that shit NPGMC released is not typical record company release material. Even with some of the production style you speak of.

The Chocolate Invasion and Supercute, Madrid To Chi-town, and Daisy Chain alone are some good experimental Prince shit imo.

When people heard that track for the first time (the instrumental parts) they had a big discussion here whether that was actually a real Prince track at all and a heated discussion started.

Some thought it was an imposter trying to recreate the trademark Prince sound, some thought it was soooo bad that it simply couldn´t be a real Prince song. lol

On the other hand, I wonder how people would feel about the New Power Soul album if it hadn´t been released and were available as a bootleg only.

Isn´t there at least ONE song on those albums that you like? I like three songs on 20Ten.

Future Soul Song, Sticky Like Glue, and Walk in the Sand sound quite good to me.

The rest is barely listenable. wink But to each is own.

Planet Earth had Somewhere Here On Earth, which is, IMO, one of his best ballads in years, and I also liked Lion of Judah (the music....the lyrics and the metaphors kind of ruined it for me but it is a song with great potential...but weird imagery).

PS: I know someone ( not a Prince fan) who went on a trip and the only music he had was the Planet Earth CD. Lo and behold, two weeks passed and he liked it.Still does. lol True story.

Couldn´t happen to me though.

What's weird about that song is that I don't like it until the end where they repeat the chorus and he even changes it up by going lower with his vocal (the fade out repeat chorus).

For whatever reason the ending works for me.

I think there were a lot of middle of the road tunes on Diamonds and Pearls that are BORING or just sound generic.

Walk don't Walk

Strolling

Live For Love

I think Slow Love is boring on the SOTT album.

I was never excited by the album version of "Baby I'm a Star" and much preferred the weird conceptual "I Would Die 4 U". Live it's something exciting though, as he changes it up, and adds all kinds of fun parts and jams.

I'm bored by "And God Created Women"... its just too normal.

I like the more strange Prince songs, the more creative ones, unless the melody is just great like "Purple Rain" or "Old Friends for Sale" or the lyrics are great.

And actually as a b-side, I was always bored by "Girl" compared to Shockadelica or Another Lonely Christmas or God or Irresistible Bitch or She's always in My Hair.

I think I'm going to have to hunt you down I beat you 2 you r Pruple and Gold with some Diamonds and pearls. You must be very young and or not around when those tunes were originally released. And If you were,,,, I'm still going to beat you, now don't clench your butt cheeks it will only hurt worse.... lol

We need to enroll you in a class to appreicate strollin' lol

but much love. I like all the songs U listed i like almost 98% of all princes material
