ONE NIGHT ALONE or THE TRUTH

They're both intimate sessions, Eavesdropped In Intimate Moments style, but without some bootlegger hiding behind the curtains next to the piano lol Which album do you prefer and why? Over at my purple pastures ONA gets more play, even though a cow such as myself realises the benefits of the Animal Kingdom Manifesto wink

Mooh.

ONA for me. I don't often revist The Truth, although I quite a few tracks individually.

Same here. Seems like ONA has a more cohesive feel. And some of the added instrumentation on TT doesn't really get the reaction out of me P expected of listeners (case in point : the trumpet in 'Man In A Uniform' cracks me up every time)

It's one of the few songs that grabs my attention on TT. I like it when P gets all bluesy. Don't play me is also a classic. But I could do without most of the other songs. Comeback perhaps because of its lyrics and their meaning when considering what P went through at the time.

ONA is not the most spectacular release in P's catalogue, but I still play it regularly. It's quite a relaxing album. Not what we normally look for in a P release, but it makes for a nice change. I adore the Joni Mitchell cover, but just in case you're wondering : it's not that different from the versions he (used to?) play in concert, nor is it very different from the one he recorded for the Joni Mitchell tribute album.

What are your favourite tracks on TT, NeonCraxx?Just wondering if people out here agree on the best tracks on that release.

Compared to what Prince is capable of with an acoustic guitar or a piano, these two albums are very average. Both albums could have been so much more.

That said, ONA is the one that would get played more in my house.

I'm biased. I'm one of those fans with the exception of maybe a couple songs - I love everything Prince does. I think it's mainly I just like his voice overall.

I wonder sometimes what shape some of the songs on the ONA take? I figure they were demos and possibly he recorded some finished product and the product maybe dance, funkier or jazzy? I had this idea tonight about the Truth. Wonder if some of those songs would sound if they were recorded demo style on piano.. ONA style? The other side of the pillow would sound awesome that way imo.

Can't decide. They both have about the same ratio of songs I like/dislike. They both are unique for Prince. ONA is all piano; TT is all acoustic. If I just had to choose, I would say that TT wins out by a hair just because Don't Play Me is one of my favorites. I don't think I can say that about any one song on ONA.

One Nite Alone... is my favorite Prince album ... seriously. Though, it wasn't until late last year that I started appreciating it.

I love The Truth as well, but the 2nd half isn't very strong. My favorites on that album are "Circle Of Amour", "Don't Play Me" and "Fascination" - in that order. The album is thrown-off for me by weaker songs like "Animal Kingdom" and "Comeback".

ONA favorites are - "Here On Earth", "A Case Of U", "One Nite Alone" and "Pearls B4 The Swine" - in that order. There isn't a song I don't love on that album.

It's exactely what I look for in a Prince album, but then again, I've always loved Prince for different reasons than most fans. I love calm/relaxing, slow and mid-tempo music. I also think this album has his best vocals ever, and some really beautiful lyrics. Also, I really, really love the sound of a piano - so that probably has something to do with why I like ONA so much.

I do agree with this. I really hope he releases another album like The Truth or ONA. Unfortunately, I don't see that ever happening. Since Musicology, he seems too concerned with sales and popularity to make another acoustic album. I hope that someday he goes back to making music like he did in the early 2000s - I'd love another Xpectation or N.E.W.S., too.

Oooh... Tough one.

I think The Truth is more consistent overall, but I think there are more special moments on One Nite Alone.

So yeah, I'm sitting on the fence lol.

For me The Truth is a much better album. The songs on One Nite Alone... seem a little undercooked. It would be great if both of those albums were in print, either as cd's or downloads.

The Truth, it was truly original and (but for some weak tracks towards the end) proved what he could produce if he steered away from the conventional output of previous albums. Charming, largely accoustic songs, with very interesting production. One Nite Alone was good but nowhere near as compelling or atmospheric for me.

For me, it seemed more creative.

ANOTHER question is:

Which one of these two is harder to find on CD?

ONA ... expect to pay approx. 100 USD for it. The Truth is bundled with Crystal Ball, and I obtained my copy for $20.00 at a used music store. I think you'll only find ONA on eBay, or somewhere like that.

Yup - I paid around $120 for it a couple years ago. Just checked one of my used sources - they have copies for $118, $180 and...yikes...$525. omfg (The $525 one is a sealed copy.)

Be careful buying cd copies of ONA. There was someone on ebay not long ago selling copies which were a bit too cheap to be true, and he/she had a ton of them. Not saying for definte they were fakes, but one has to wonder.

The prices quoted above seem about right $100-120 for a new mint copy. The one at $525 is quite frankly a piss take and one would have to be totally insane to pay anywhere near that price. It could come with a free moon and it would still be too much.
