A similar thing happened to me last night at a party but with a 30 year old. She said "prince? And you admit that?". So I poured my drink over her. Well I wanted to.

Conversation would be over for me right there. Not because it's Prince; but saying "and you admit that?" about someone's musical taste shows you're a dumbass.

Hey loudmouth, shut the fuck up, right?

Some people just don't take in a wide sphere of influence regardless of age - there are plenty of 22yo's who know what time it is. smile

Last month, I saw Prince at the Tacoma Dome and my concert mates were two men - 26 & 28 years old and they LOVE PRINCE. Both these guys are musicians. So, I guess it just depends who you talk to.

I have this problem too with other 20 something year olds (I'm still in my 20's). Hell I even have this problem when I talk to 30 year olds!! And I have to ask myself whether I begin schooling them on the great musical talents of Princey & why I think they should check him out.., but now I don't bother anymore so much because if they don't know Prince music then they aren't worthy of knowing.
pray Peace in the House of Prince.

Yeah, agree.

Although... imagine someone telling you their favourite band is the Spice Girls... Of course there's a huge difference, but what they are to us, Prince might be to other people...

I'm almost 30 years old and I've been a Prince fan for as long as I care to remember. It definitely wasn't an easy road to travel - especially when I was at school. I had all kinds of idiots coming up to me and singing songs like "Cream" and "Diamonds and Pearls" as if to say "Prince is a faggot" and all of that type of nonsense. I even had this one girl who used to sit next to me in my history class who would always tell me that I was "beyond obsessed" with Prince. Perhaps she had a point. lol I've definitely toned down a lot since then. I hardly LISTEN to Prince anymore!

Anyhow, I haven't had to deal with any of that type of stuff as an adult, because most people have responded with: "Oh, cool!" That remark is usually followed by "Is he still recording?," which is kinda annoying cuz I have to say "Yeah he released this and this," but hey, at least they're not giving me a hard time anymore.

That reminds me, I was in a nightclub late last year and one of my old class mates was DJing. Imagine my surprise when I heard him playing "I Wanna Be Your Lover" over the speakers. Funny how things can turn around.

I was in a club full of people dancing to Gett Off last night with a surprising amount of people singing along, so i'm sure this isn't an epidemic just yet.

I've noticed that "Gett Off" is one of the few Prince songs that most people who aren't familiar with his work in general, know about.

Probably because it gets played alot at clubs and it's about fucking - which, let's be real, is the ultimate goal of most people who go to clubs in the first place.

Doesn't mean they're necessarily Prince fans or actually know much about his music beyond that. Basically, if I mention Prince to someone and the first songs they mention are 'Kiss', 'Purple Rain', 'LRC', 'When Doves Cry' or 'Gett Off', I conclude that they're just posing and don't know shit about him.

To some extent I'm starting to notice the same trend with 'Erotic City', which I've seen other people who clearly aren't Prince fans, mention before, along with 'Sex Shooter' by Apollonia 6. Ask the motherfuckers about "Splash" and they go mute on you. lol

haha, it's funny that this stuff is shocking/offensive to some of you because I've routinely had to explain who Prince is. I don't expect anyone under 30 to know Prince at all. If I'm lucky I'll get a response like, 'Oh, doesn't he have the song about the kiss? Is it called Kisses?'

It's really hard to say why this is, though.

Someone like Madonna shows up in James Bond films and kisses Britney Spears. George Michael gets covered by Limp Bizkit. Elton John shows up on The Simpsons, lets William Shatner do a spoken word Rocketman, etc etc. These are things that introduce old acts to younger people. "But Prince does that stuff too!" you might say. Sure, but for some reason it doesn't work!

-Prince played at the superbowl, on Leno, Lopez Tonight, Ellen, Oprah (I think, anyway)...

-There are tons of 'secret' prince jokes floating around in pop culture (the simpsons, family guy, mortal kombat, those brad neeley cartoons)

-Tons of musicians talk him up like crazy (dave grohl, for example).

-And Limp Bizkit covered 1999 (it's really shitty, even for limp bizkit. Don't go looking for it unless you want to get angry)

i'm sure there are more examples. You'd think that with all these shout-outs in pop culture, people would at least know the name.

But no. Typical conversation:
'Oh so I'm going to see Prince soon'
'Who's Prince?'
'He did 1999'
'what's 1999?'
'It's the song with the line, "tonight we're gonna party like its 1999."'

'I don't recognize it.'
'People make jokes about it... y'know Weird Al's Amish Paradise?'
'Nope.'
'... y'know that joke on family guy with the caveman version of peter saying, "tonight we're gonna party like it's 9?"'
'Nope.'
'...'

I already made up my mind about people that I've met who don't like/know Prince or think he's gay. Sure enough, those people have already made up their minds about me. But I could care less if they think i'm "weird". I don't need friends with similar interests anyways lol

I expect people my age to at least know who Prince is, though. I even knew about him 3 years ago when I wasn't a fan. There's no excuse to say you don't recognize that name or a song by him, unless you've been living in a 3rd world country or just born yesterday.

who are these people that you're talking to? i gotta figure if you're over 21 you should know who prince is. i mean the superbowl, the grammys with beyonce, musicology, etc. all happened after today's 21 year old turned 13.

i've been shocked recently by people who don't know who morris day is. after hearing this, i realize that my expectations are way too high.

I'm sure many of us have similar experiences, I know I do. That's why I visit here - it's my safe haven from the masses who don't know him at all and from those who know him a little and judge me either a) a sex freak b) a weirdo c) an old person (even tho' I'm not old or look it, I think).

I'm 23 and feel a ridiculous need to say that whoever you talked to doesn't represent all young(er) people.

You guys are hung up on the wrong thing. With age, too old/too young doesn't matter when it comes to music.

Everybody's on their own trip.

There are 21 years old that have every Prince album.

And there are 55 year olds that have never heard a Prince song.

Get used to it.

There's a lot out of there.

Touché. Nicely put. Many of my peers in their late 30s are very ignorant to prince. It's wether you appreciate real musical talent or not and sadly most people don't give a shit. Age is not an issue. But having said that, younger peole like yourself who recognize and enjoy princes talents deserve recognition and respect as you have found him despite your own eras pop culture having moved on. It was easier for us as prince was relevant to the masses when we got hooked.
