Do most people my age never watch music channels [except for the ones that consider 2006 old] or something?

Prince is the new rebellious one, I feel better saying I like Prince than MJ (though of course I do), cause it's way too cool to like MJ now that it makes me not want to look like I'm in the crowd

Don't worry, I call them both my favourite male artists and not give a shit. I just quickly say I loved MJ for years first to distinguish myself from the crowd.

My girlfriend was 21 when I first met her in 2008 (no I'm not a child molester: we didn't date until she was 23), and she'd never heard of Prince... at all. In the end she'd already heard Kiss before, and only Kiss, but she had no clue who was singing it.

I asked just to check if she was from planet Mars or something and she'd heard of Bowie, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Elton John. But not Prince. On the other hand, she was 6 when got his last major exposition around 1993, so...

You don't need to be overtly complexed to make great music you know. Michael Jackson is FAR from overproduced and sterile.

for someone to say that they are into music and not know or have very little knowledge of who prince is ...is unforgivable...i mean...when i was a teen...i knew who all the greats were from the pop and rock era...beatles...rolling stones...led zeppelin...and so on....i remember not liking bob dylans voice and struggeling to understand why he was regarded so highly but at least i knew who he was and..over time...my view of him has changed into understanding why he is one of the greats...

prince is one of the greats from many musicial veiwpoints...the most obvious being one of the major stars of the 80s....so anyone who says they are into music and not know their musicial history to some degree isnt worth talking to anymore in my opinion...even if they dont like prince ..they should at least know a bit about him...

my sentiments exactimundo. unfortunately i don't think music has the same cultural impact on the youth anymore. music is just another part of a vast multimedia market and has become a soundtrack to a bland, desparate to be cool lifestyle.

the days of queueing up on a monday morning outside shops to purchase a new vital album are gone. nowadays people are queueing for the latest ipod etc, it seems the music is becoming secondary.

of course not all kids are like this, teen spirit can never die, i remain hopeful, the greatest music has always came in adverse times.

I'm quite sure many young people never heard of Jimi Hendrix...

Hammer Time. Actually, you'd be amazed of the people around my age who know what that is. It's kind of sad, but I personally know more people around my age who know about MC Hammer, but know nothing about Prince. Figure that one out.

Well I think it's safe to say that he doesnt appeal people the same way other 80's musicians/stars do. I think it has partially to do with his many "sounds", people not knowing how to hum his songs, which I think is an essence when creating music. Image wise he dont pull people in the same way other androgynous people do, like Bowie, it might be, because people dont connect that tradition with black artists(?). Obviously for people who know music, they will know who Prince is. The people who mostly know him are either musicians and singers, people who were born when he was famous, parents who are fans/liked his music, interested in 80's music or just loves knowing about music.

He's a very intelligent musician and I actually think that alot of his work, would it been done by other artists would have been far more successful and popular nowadays. Also most people the past 10 yrs or so dont really talk about Prince, in the same extent that popular artists in the 90's did. Except Alicia Keys, Dave Grohl and some other artists/producers, there are not alot of citations or commentery about him. Which I always find kinda strange. People from this generation do hear alot about Stevie Wonder, MJ, U2 and The Beatles because they are quoted by millions of people because they reached all types of places. In a global perspective Prince's music never reached out the same way Madonnas or MJ's, music did, and since the parents didnt hear it, most likely their children wont either. Also I have to include the fact that the reason why alot of young people know Madonna & MJ is because of dance and the image (videos). We live in a global world, but he's not a global superstar in the same sense of John Lennon, MJ, Stevie, Madonna, Queen, unless you count people knowing his hits like "purple rain", "kiss" or "1999"... He's one of those artists people respect but dont pay attention too.

His religious persona dont really fit in with modern day artists and since he's not provacative anymore (because this generation has pretty much grown up watching nakedness on TV) people dont see him as interesting.

Some ppl know him tho and it's always fun. But I wonder what will happen in another 10 yrs or so?

I still hear it and some of the big 80's hits

I do too on oldy stations but not on the "whats current" stations...

The average 22 year old probably doesn't know who Hank Snow is either.
