Hammer Time. Actually, you'd be amazed of the people around my age who know what that is. It's kind of sad, but I personally know more people around my age who know about MC Hammer, but know nothing about Prince. Figure that one out.

That's true, but he only has that one song anyway lol

I do not know, I'm only 19 years old and none of my friends do not share my tastes (Pink Floyd, Prince and other music from the 70-90s), but it absolutely does not bother me. Young people are usually fond of the "hot" artists, that's not bad actually. wink

The "hot" artists in my day were better than what's out there now. And that wasn't so long ago either, just over 10 years ago.

10 years ago - is 2001-2002 ....

I do not think that the music was much better than now, actually.
Mid 90's - the last line of excellent quality music. cool

2000/2001 being the last okay year kinda, after that, I became selective and hated mainstream for the most part

Well I've always loved Prince my whole life & I think once you've heard his music there's no going back. I can't listen to any of the crappy music most others my age listen to. Of course I'll never tell anyone that I think their music isn't very good because we all have our personal tastes (each to their own you know) but the artists of today (would we call them "artists"?) lack substance & talent, excluding a few very good ones here & there.

I practically have to restrain myself from hijacking the playlist when I go to parties because I'm just dying to listen to Prince.

I don't think I would be able to have a decent convo about most of the artist today (in a good way)

Well I always liked older music along with current though I feel very weird calling it older since I was around some of it since as early as I could remember. I don't remember a time when I didn't know of MJ and Prince's existence thanks to my family playing them, so I find it hard to relate to people my age who may not be familiar though way more have always been familiar with MJ than Prince, though that's a seperate topic altogether.

I would actually say to these people, "what are you an idiot? So you live in a cage? Are you special?" Because this has nothing to do with the age of a person but just how informed of a person they are. I don't mean to insult your friends... That's a lie, yes I do. Well, it's at least good that they know who Prince is. Talkin to my friends:

"What music do you listening to?"

"Mostly Prince. Sometimes old good rock..."

"Who?"

"Ahh... some guy, something like the greatest rival of MJ. You probably don't know him..."

"Yeah.. I don't"

After conversations like this one, I didn't want to live of this planet anymore. Planet, where Lady Gaga is the most popular 'musician'.

Prince seems to enjoy an International presence with only the 30+ crowd in Europe and the Americas.

Nobody in Asian that I've spoken to has a clue who he is.

With the increasing globalization of musical influences, it's strange to see

his reach diminishing.

The time Prince was slapping down lawsuit threats, he could use that time to reinvent himself or connect himself with the young audience. It is not totally their fault they dont know about Prince because when it is the last time a typical under 25 year old might see a Prince video or song since Prince mainly play can be hear on oldies stations but I barely hear Prince songs on those stations its the same choosen oldies they play. One thing about MJ he always manage to connect with the young crowd.

If people in their twenties don't know Prince's music, it is partly his own fault:

* He has no website

* He pulls fan videos of his performances off YouTube

* His live shows are generally expensive (with the LA 21 nights being an exception). Many people their twenties can't afford to go.

These three things reduce Prince's appeal to younger fans. Of course, young musicians still know who Prince is, but a lot of other young people don't. If Prince wants to stay relevant, he should: put together a good website (see David Bowie's as an example), stop pulling fan videos off YouTube - especially when it is something he couldn't sell anyway (ex: a baby singing to one of his songs), and lower the ticket prices to his live shows.

Exactly.

im 39 and I tried to get my wife into prince since Ive known her (for about 15 years). She knows who he is and a few of his songs but she absolutely hates him, particularly his voice. When I ask her to give him a chance she tries but cannot get beyond the voice and she thinks the music is too strange. The big difference between me and wife is that she is an "occaisional" listener of music, is not interested in music history like I am and doesnt play an instrument like I do. The point being is that I think people who truly understand music like Prince, I think those that only like popular music may ignore him or hate him. This is because Prince is highly creative, you could say he is too creative for specific people's ears. It takes a bit of time and patience to understand the sheer quality of Prince's music and even then there are some people who will just never get it.

About the age thing, I think my thoughts above explain the age problem with Prince music. Young people dont know who Prince is and many dont care for him because his great songs are just SO different to modern pop music. Young people have to retune their ears to "prince mode" to get what is happening in the world of Prince music. I dont blame young people, I have rarely enjoyed any new music since the mid 90's but that is because I have not really tried to understand it, I ignore it because it sounds like trash to me, but Im sure in there somewhere is some quality, it's just that I do not want to find it and I am perfectly happy listening to songs my from my "era".

If I speak to a 22 year old and they know a lot about Prince I would be for one shocked, it's because I do not expect young people to care so much about music which was popular 20-30 years ago by an artist that is rarely in the press (with certain exceptions, superbowl, etc). The like of Rolling Stones, Beatles, etc will always have young fans because they get so much press - I think I see Paul McCartney in the news every two days and I see the Beatles on the cover of NME every month. I cant remember the last time I saw Prince on the cover of anything.

So my point is, it's no one's fault for this ignorance, its just the way of the world and in a way us old folk can be accused of being "ignorant" of modern pop, no matter how crap I think it is.

True. I always say to my friends that they probably won't like him immediately, it takes time to understand his music. It's not about liking his songs, it's about understand his message (even it's something like Head or Darling Nikki).

also I do think it is a generational thing. I am 39 and you listened to your parents music-because you had no choice and you did everything toghether. Now a family is truly living as separate entities due to technology in the bedroom etc. When I grew up I knew about the Ink Spots etc-music I wouldnt listen to now but at the time... well from a purely factual point of view...prince is...if not the most...then certainly one of the most talented people in music...the facts speak for themselves...so i dont have a problem with people not liking his music...cant please everyone...but i DO have a problem with someone dismissing him as crap or having a go at you for you liking him...as it clearly shows they know fuck all ...and people who talk about things they know fuck all about should be avoided at all times...

Thing is with James Brown, Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney is that they're still musical refrences and they are still relevent to this day, that's why you have Paul and Bruce Springsteen playing along with Dave on the Grammys and kids on tumblr, twitter talk about it. For some reason Prince doesnt really appeal the same way... Perhaps people only see him as a pop star from the 80's ? He's not really mentioned in today's music world, unless it's about his concerts.

i think prince is just as relevant today as those acts. they all stopped making their best music before prince made his best. you could say prince was popular in the 80s in the same way as saying those acts were popular in the 60s and 70s, but became legacy acts afterwards. i mean if any of them put out a new record, apart from the fans, who would care about hearing the new songs if they were to tour?

I never thought of it that way before, but I think you're right. I wonder how much kids even get exposed to their parents' music now?

When I was growing up, we three kids all had to listen to my parents' classic country radio stations on long car rides. So I grew up hearing people like: Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, and Dolly Parton. My taste in music veered away from that as a teenager (when I discovered Prince, Rick James, AC-DC, etc), but I am glad I was exposed to classic country western. I am even going back to it a little now. I also still like to listen to different radio stations (NOT just "classic" ones) to hear what is popular now.

I think if you love music, you should be open to music put out before you were born AND music put out now. I don't have a lot of patience with people who claim "all music today sucks" or who don't want to listen to anything that wasn't put out in the last decade. They are missing out on a lot of good stuff.

Gold you had kids on Twitter asking "Who the hell is Paul McCartney".

Not much different than what they are saying about Prince.

And 20 years ago, I can tell you being a big Beatles and McCartney/Lennon fan....there were quite a few who had no idea who they were.
