Most prolific artists - PRINCE vs ELTON JOHN (I'm afraid Elton John wins)

I believe Prince once did play: "Bennie And The Jets" (the Elton John hit) ?

I can't remember where, though?

I have seen these 2 guys, Prince and Elton on the same stage, some audience live-dvd from the Prince tour at the O2 Arena in the UK 2007. Excellent.

I heart both artists deeply.

And, I have been listening, the past 2-3 days, non-stop to Elton John's excellent "One Night Only" live CD - from the year 2000. (The DVD, named "Greatest Hits Live" is great as well, and inludes even more songs).

Now who of these 2 would you rank as the most prolific artist this generation question

Speaking of top 40 hit singles,

Elton John may be the true "King of pop", sorry if ther's any MJ fans in the house... wink

But Elton J. certainly wins over Prince for having a string of a lot more consecutive hit singles in UK/ US:

Prince beats almost every artist in his generation,

cuz Prince had a hit every year cosecutive from 1982 (with the "1999" single in the UK) every year to the re-release of "1999" in the year 1999.

Prince: a total of 18 years from 1982 to 1999.

however....

Elton John is the winner: he had a hit every year from 1970 to 1999, a total of 30 years.

Elton John's impressive string of consecutive hit singles runs from 1970 (with the single "Your Song") to the single "Written In The Stars" in the year 1999.

Damn that's a lot of hits.... eek

Source, Elton John:

according wikip "Your Song" was a #7 hit in UK in 1970:

and...

"Nikita" was a #7 hit for Elton in the US in 1986, (not 1985):

Sorry, I don't talk "hits"....every "hit" is bought.

Elton doesn't even write his own lyrics dude.

Prolific? Prince, by a landslide

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Soo. Please calm down a bit guys... razz

I just believe 30 years of having a hit every year.. is kind of impressive for Sir Elton...

well, isn't it...?

I don't know.

I think Elton John got more hits, and sold more records... but of course I love Prince more. But I also love Elton John, he is great.

I heart both artists deeply.

The night they performed together was 13 September, 2007.

Elton John made a guest appearance to sing "The Long and Winding Road".

Later, during the sample set, Prince played a very short sample of "Bennie and The Jets"

...Does it really matter?

"Prolific" is just a fancy way of saying "Did more shit".

Doesn't necessarily mean that the stuff they're doing, is good. For the record, I'm not saying Elton's music sucks. BILLY JOEL'S music, sucks.

I'm speaking more to the general idea that more = better, which isn't always the case.

RD Hull played what is one of my all time fav. Elton songs. Great lyrics!! Yet again, it's not Elton who writes the lyrics...The music is a big part of any song but ultimatly it comes down to the lyrics...I think and once again it is a Prince site that we're on but Prince wins this discussion. Prince may have had more chart hits had he continued to play the industry game. On a side note, every Elton John song that I've heard george Michael sing, I think it's been better...Albeit, George would be my number two favorite artist...

I don't see why people find the need to compare artists. Just appreciate their music.

Elton is great but cannot compare to Prince at all. Apple and oranges here. Elton only write music, not lyrics. He only plays one instrument and only plays one type of music. Does not compare.

Mmmh... I thought prolific was about composing many songs, not about them being hits...

Prince is something like the 75th or 80th most selling artist of all times. Far behind Elton John I think, but so much better than 99,99% of the world's bands and artists...

^ Ok the reason I made the thread:

At first I thought WOW Prince had a hit in the US/ UK Top 40 every year consecutive from 1982 > 1999.

Extremely impressive, 18 years. With a string of big hits. Very rare for an artist to be that successful:

then I found out (in anotyher thread here, some time ago):

Elton John had even more hits in the US/ UK Top 40 but from 1970 > 1999.

That's all, 30 years - if that isn't impressive.. OK.

I guess - at least that's my opinion - that Elton John is making "real music, + he's a real musician".

It's also true that Elton's music sucks the past many years however he made a great album in 2001: "Songs From The West Coast".

^ the same thing can be said about Prince: his albums sucks since TGE, but he (Prince) also made a rather good album in - 2001: "Rainbow Children". imo. smile

I love both artists, and imo they should respect each other for what they have achieved.

I know/ have been listening to all albums from Prince, I can't say I know all by Elton, far from. But I have some Elton John live recordings, and his Greatest Hits/ Very Best of CDs.

I really like those classics.

Amazing, both.. maybe the word "prolific" is the wrong word, but.... what word should be used then to describe these 2 genius artists then.. ?

(sorry for that rather looong reply)
