Oh dear, Honesttly! What do you mean 'I'm afraid Elton wins'. If you can't work out that Prince is way more prolific, you might as well give up now.

Both are fantastic artists, what they have achieved is amazing.

Elton John had a string of 30 years from 1970 to 1999 with a hit every year on the US/ UK Top 40.

Prince had a string of 18 years from 1982 to (the year) 1999.

imo both are very prolific. Elton was in his peak in the 70s and Prince in the 80s.

speaking about their chart succes, their impact, importance, their ability to write a hit song, maybe "prolific" is the wrong word...

or is it? wink

Elton never did that. He's written songs but all of his big hits aren't by him.

1. Sources?

2. If you think Elton John is better than someone who created multiracial, multigenre, controversial, critically acclaimed, commercially successful music than just go to Elton John fan sites. As he isn't anywhere Prince is

Elton tried to take a shit on Prince once and Prince caught him before he could put his drawers back on.

Elton's performed plenty of medleys, and he's been just as influenced by R&B as much as Prince was influenced by rock. Let's not forget Elton played Soul Train because he had a crossover hit with his tribute to TSOP.

Roger Waters was talking about how great Elton is at coming up with a melody, and wishes he had that knack. The guy from Pink Floyd said this. Elton's had some really bad albums, and he's admitted to those, but some really underrated ones, too. I think Elton's had a pretty good run over the past decade as far as those songs go, kind of went back to his roots in the southern gospel stuff he'd incorporate. He also talked about Laura Nyro being an influence on him at that time, and to me, she is a bigger influence than Joni on that whole confessional genre. I don't know if "Blue" would've happened otherwise, or Carole King's "Tapestry". Laura was a game changer, and that's why she's being inducted. I hear Patti Smith to Tori Amos in Laura's songs. She also made David Geffen his first million with all those songs she wrote and others covered. He's worth how many billions now?

And as far as the whole lyrics go - do you even know what a lot of those songs back in the day were about? Rocket Man was about cocaine and being on the road. But Take Me To The Pilot? There's some really pretentious stuff that makes no sense - Bernie's kind of admitted to it. It's really Elton's melodies and the way he delivers those songs that made them hits. Taking someone's poems and putting them in a song format is hard. I'm sure Prince struggled plenty with putting lyrics to some of his, and I'm sure there's threads about worst lyrics somewhere in this forum. He works at such a rapid pace sometimes, that if the words just sound good enough in the song, it doesn't have to be great. A lot of people in rock bands have talked about writing nonsense lines, but because the words have a rhythm to them, keep them in.

And I'd put SOTT up against Goodbye Yellow Brick Road on a double album debate. I kind of wish Elton had worked with Prince in the mid 80s under a pseudonym... Elton's stuff in the mid 80s was crap with a few good songs in there.

Elton's too busy poncing around ordering flowers, getting wigs fitted and buying art to be as prolific as Prince.

Elton is without a doubt the more prolific shopper, wig adjuster and sniffer of flowers than Prince.

Okay, I know this is bratty of me.... but in which part of this description is Prince different? lol
