i don't know if it is but i'm saying it would be nice if it did man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Prince really should be selling these himself.
I would imagine the earnings would be good, though not as great as his concerts (I mean, the bitch has been using the same damned minimal stage sets for a decade now or something like that , so he must be making a killing. ).
However, I view DVD releases the same way I view allowing performances on youtube--it's free advertising...It's 'growing' the customer base.

BartVanHemelen said:[qp>Once more proof of how clueless Prince is. He could have made money by selling this online as streaming and/or a DVD or a Blu-ray. But nooooo, he was too busy screwing people who'd paid $77 for his lame-ass website[/quote] Although Bart is pretty pathetic in spending so many years bashing Prince as he is obviously still totally fascinated, he is correct. Prince could be making so much releasing the DVDs. As I have said before, for a dvd or blue ray of a classic '86-88 show, I would pay $50-75 easy and so would a lot of us. Imagine that Lovesext aftershow in London becoming available.

Maybe Prince knows that all his shows are bootlegged, and that people end up getting them for free on the internet, and he'd rather his fans ultimately get them for free than have to pay him for them.
So maybe, just maybe, Prince is the most generous artist in history.
Or maybe not.
But maybe! | |

Imagine if he had some sort of website where you could go on and watch these things for as much as you can download them via a torrent. Or maybe a webiste where you could purchase a digital download or a copy. Or even possibly a website with an annual subscription fee (I don't know, something like $77 a year) where this kind of stuff could be streamed or downloaded for free. Or let's get really crazy and say he made some deal with iTunes or Amazon where you could pay for items a la carte and download them.
That would be amazing.

prince is not stupid..
i have a feeling he is 'in' on the bootlegging.. and he probably makes a ton of money on it.. not having to worry about a big company distributing it....
after all this time..and all the complaining he does about the bootlegging... i really have to believe he has a hand in it...
and he has got to know that us die hards LIVE for the bootlegs more than anything else that is put out...
he is a smart man.. there is no way that he isnt finding a way to milk this cow.

believe what you want, but he hasn't. Busy doin' something close to nothing
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
He's not got his hand in it at all, because it's not a huge secret where different bootlegs come from and how they get produced. Prince is not involved. Some of these latest DVD's are shot by fans on cell phones and stuff that's carefully edited together and then synced up to whatever fan's best audio recording exists.
You have to imagine how much money Prince makes from album/dvd sales vs his concert sales. I think it's incomparable at this point. Prince gives away albums for free as a way to promote his tour. How many people would buy this latest 2009 concert DVD? Multiply that by the sales price, then subract manufacturing, distributing, and advertising costs. I don't think it would be enough money from a business standpoint. The only reason Prince would do it is for prestige, and to reconnect with his hard core fans, and for music critics. But as far as his lifestyle, his tour is fueling the fund fire for years worth of custom clothes, staff, and freedom to make music and videos on his own terms. But this is not a classic '86-'88 show, it's one from 2009.
As for paying $50-75 for a classic era blu-ray, really? I'm glad I live where I do because the average cost for a new title music blu-ray here is between £10-20.

You are wrong.

Exactly. I don't know why people KEEP wanting to think or insinuate that he is behind his own pirated shit! It's been made clear time and time again where they come from. I guess people love a good conspiracy.

The new video on youtube is just another taster for this release. I would not expect this to be available for download exactly on the release date, remember this is a pressed dvd release, not a download, we will have to wait for someone to take delivery of the disc and be so kind as to take the time to upload it so the rest of us can obtain it. Pressed releases usually take a couple of days (at least) to appear on download sites.

I guess you'll be glad someone is paying for a pressed disc for once then.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
If people want to buy pressed discs that is their decision. What I dislike about a lot of these pressed discs is the ones which were originally free releases. Pre download days everyone who wanted boots had to buy pressed releases, myself included.

Like this one? Like Montreux? Like which one?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
No, not like these ones. The '84 Birthday soundboard, The Feline rehearsal, First Ave '86, The White Girls rehearsal, the Box Of Chocolates release, the 4df soundboard series, etc etc. All these and many more were originally free releases that were then pressed up and sold on discs. The new 4DF parade boot has already been sloted for a pressed release.

Oh, I'm well aware of your personal feelings on the pressed v's fan release subject.
I just find it mildly amusing that one of the biggest voices on the board against pressed releases by bootleg labels is relishing someone else handing over their money so he can watch the pressed product.
Only mildly amused, mind.

Before you continue to be mildly amused, read the second sentence in my post again.

...right, and you should read the 2nd sentence of my post. And round and round we go.
Until then I'll continue to be mildy amused.

did anyone even notice it said January 20th at the end of the clip?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Comedian Louis C. Clark recently put his stand-up concert online for $5 via PayPal, and made 2 mil within something like 10 days. As long as it's affordable people will pluck down the $5 rather than scour the web and hope to find it and download it without getting a virus. Good advertising and he made a few bucks. I hear Louis kept some of the money for himself and donated the rest. The story earned CK a lot of press, some money and a lot of good will.
