Something in the Water-appreciation A new favorite song added to my (not yet fully created) list of 50 favorite Prince songs. It's now at number 19 but growing on me
What do you like about the song...if anything?
Yes, it's only my fist time hearing this amazing song all the way through
His voice and the piano playing are what gets me

I LOVE IT. Always has been one of my all time favorite songs, and I still listen to it very often.
I like how he´s come up with so many drastically different versions over the years, with totally different arrangements. Almost making it an entirely different song but still keeping the main ingredients in it. The only version that disappointed me was the latest one he did with Andy Allo, the acoustic one that didn´t even sound like Something In the Water...barely recognizable melody..if it wasn´t for the lyrics it would have been a totally different song. Very half assed attempt.
Anyway,I like these: 1. The original album version.....cold, electronic, full of yearning, desperation, anger, frustration and passion. Gives you the feeling that he was really feeling the lyrics AND the music back in the day, like he was writing what and how he felt, mostly based on real life experiences.
2. The one that he recorded a year or two later, the version with the piano and bass and slightly omitted verses. I love it and the piano and deeper bass make it an interesting, warmer sounding brother of the original version.
3. The 1983-84 rehearsal and live concert versions.....great guitar, passionate delivery, slow and emotional. I could listen to this all day....and sometimes I do. I like the 15 min. rehearsal version. Can´t get enough of it. It is neither too long nor too short, it´s just perfect.
4. The One Night Alone tour version....light, airy, breezy, a bit funny, with an almost caribbean feel to it. Heard it first at Paisley Park when he played after Bernhard Allison. I love this version, too. He gave a great rendition at Le Bataclan in Paris, too.
I think he also did an acoustic version in Washington during the Musicology tour but I haven´t heard that one yet. I didn´t like the last acoustic version on his most recent tours though....the main melody was missing, and the passion wasn´t there.
LOVE ...THIS...SONG ! " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I just Looooove that song, every version of it, except the one with Andy Allo which I haven't heard yet.. The best was at the Bataclan IMO There's a mood, there's also the fastness which gives me a kind of energy, it computes definetely with me.. Cool song. Most Prince fans love it. So if "you think you're special ... well so do I".

It's fantastic. I've always liked it, but it has recently grown on me until making it into my Prince top 10. To me, it's both brilliant and weird, just like The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker or Joy In Repetition.
Nothing sounded like this back in the day. It's amazing.

I think I heard the warmer one. It gives me shivers!!!
When did I ever say this? I didn't think I was the ONLY one who liked this.

I've always wondered which version was first, the officially released one or the one similiar to the '84 Birthday Day show. Anyone know what prompted a re-recording of it a year later? Also is the unreleased version just him or the full band?

One of the best songs on 1999. The song's real chilling in terms of its sound (purple music with a tinge of blues) and even the lyrics are bone-chilling... Prince was on some other level when he recorded this!

Listen to the superior piano heavy version....recorded later, 1984?...very funky and sounds much more up to date....far, far better than the album version IMO... [Edited 12/16/11 14:13pm]

Yeah I think that's the one I heard and fell in love with. I don't think I heard the album version becuase i read that one was harsher.

For a long time this was favorite cut on the lp. When I first heard it in 1982 I was literally like . Fast forward to 1997, and I this is the song I danced to for my senior project in college.
Slooooowwwwly and over time, I becoming one of those that believes that 1999 really is his best lp ever! I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

I'm so glad someone posted about this because it's my favorite P track. EVER. hands down. I have never felt angst and pain and lust as seriously on any other song. And I can't get enough of it's non-conventional feel... Brilliant How'm I gonna fill this empty room...
