Prince & Morris Recordings I stumbled upon this interesting little story that I wasn't previously aware of:
"Prince and Morris Day worked on the dance remix of [Let's Work] on 8 December 1981, two months after the track's initial release, also at Sunset Sound. It was revealed in November 2003 on the NPG Music Club website that Morris Day plays drums on the extended portion of the dance remix, and that Prince and Morris Day switched drumming duties live as the tape was running."
I'm now curious to know what other tracks feature Prince and Morris. So far I have:
Let's Work Cloreen Bacon Skin The Walk Dance to the Beat Partyup (Live)
I'm guessing "Tricky" and I've heard rumors that Morris is scattered throughout many of the songs cut between 1980 and 1981. Can anyone confirm this or list specific songs with Prince and Morris playing (not just singing, that is)?

I'm looking into what other songs Morris played drums on though

Before 2003, I had always wondered why the extended version had 2 different beats. I can tell that Prince wasn't playing the 2nd half, but couldn't tell who it was.

Why Morris never play the drums live in any of his gigs? Even when he first toured in the late eighties early nineties alone. Never played live...I would like 2 c him play. Especially "Let's Work" live with Prince on his mega successful W2A tour. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

I didn't know that. Makes me wonder if Morris was also drumming on any of the "Corporate World" tracks, Murph Drag in particular...

He played drums on Party Up live with Prince in 1982 @ 1st Avenue
I think there was another show where he played drums and it was a combination of Prince & the noituloveR Vanity 6 & the Time

Possible, PV lists Prince as playing most instruments on Corporate World though http://www.princevault.co...rate_World

Do you remember exactly what it said? I don't recall that, but that is some great info!
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

There is someone I communicate with who has a lot of the background info on the studio and live shows of the Times/Morris Days career. Has Jesse on guitar, I'll talk to him, but why do you say it's all Prince?

On 16th May 1983 [Prince] appears at the 3rd annual Minnesota Music Awards at the Charlton Celebrity Room in Bloomington and was finally honored with six awards. He thanked Minneapolis for its support and ended the night with a 10-minute jam of "D.M.S.R." on borrowed equipment with a mix of members of his own band, [Morris Day], [Jesse Johnson] and Vanity 6. Later this night they performed a jam session at First Avenue in Minneapolis with [Morris Day or Jesse Johnson] on drums and Sue Ann Carwell singing the lead vocals.

Any info you can get would be great -- I'm really intrigued to hear more about Morris' musical role in Prince's career...

How can there be a third person on 'Cloreen'— there are only two instruments!?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I always thought it was just Prince and Morris but if indeed Jesse was there then maybe it's Prince on vocals, Jesse on bass and Morris on drums. Jesse has jammed on drums with Prince but I don't know if Morris can also play bass. Nearly anything's possible though...

But anyway there are other orgers who know it's prince on my ddrawers.ask blackguitaristz or don't ,just listen to the song

Well by the Time Ice Cream Castles was about, Jesse was playing Prince's style pretty good
Blackguitaristz isn't around anymore that I know of. I've listened to the songs since 1984...
No problem I'm just trying to get correct info, no need for the attitude

Jesse did the solo on My Drawers. He wasn't happy with the volume that the solo got, but it is his. However, there were dissensions in the studio, and guitarist Jesse Johnson, who was strongly involved in the project, was disappointed in Prince's strong control over the group, "He only let me write and produce on the last Time album because he knew I was quitting, and when I quit anyway he took my production credit off. I wrote, played and produced stuff like 'Jungle Love.'"

Either way, 'My Drawers' has got some of my favorite guitaring of any Prince-related track. Awesome track.
I have no secret info but it's always sounded not very Prince-y to me, being a more riff-centric song. In my head that sort of stronger slashing rhythmic playing is more JJ. But of course I could be wrong.

The basic tracks were recorded in studio 2 at Sunset Sound starting on Wednesday, January 11, 1984. Over the next several days, Prince spent a lot of time working on the song, which included additional work by Jesse Johnson who recorded his solo soon after that. In the end, Jesse was unhappy with the way Prince mixed it. This is based on personal interviews with Jesse Johnson while doing research for the book PRINCE: The Studio Sessions. Hope that clears that up a little bit.

And you can definitely hear that it's him on the drums on this song too! Especially the demo version.

I have it on good authority from my source of "No Person in Particular" the following happened.
One day Morris was cooking bacon in the studio. Prince objected to bacon being cooked in such close proximity. THIS was the last straw for Prince's patience. He said to Morris "Why the hell are you cooking so much damn bacon?" Morris shrugged and responded, "Who doesn't love bacon?" The band got terribly quiet. It was then the following happened. Prince looked at Morris and threw his spatula and said, "It is either the bacon or the band. What time is it, brother? " Morris grabbed another spatula off his belt (how COOL is that?!?!) and said "It is always time for bacon" Morris laughed & then he continued cooking bacon. (Who wouldn't though? It is bacon and you got the stove on, why the hell not?) Prince immediately shut down the studio and sent everybody home. The Time had run out of sand in their hourglass.
Folks, this is completely disgraceful. The Time broke up over cooking bacon in the studio! And my source "No Person in Particular" is VERY credible.
