As far as I can remember Vanity met Prince backstage at the AMA's in 1980. Vanity apparently was dating Rick James and left his camp for the new rising star, Prince. Prince at the time or a little after was seeing Susan from V6. Once the V6 formed in 81-82, there were many fights with Vanity and Prince because he was still going back and forth between Vanity and Susan and possibly Sheila E. at the time. Supposedly Vanity told Prince she had it with him running all these women, which lead to her leaving the Prince camp(along with wanting more money). In late 83-84 Prince became interested in Susanah, Wendy's sister, which was full in 85-86. That's the stories that I know of. __________________________________________________

Even as he struggled with the Time, Prince began planning another side project - an all female group that would, again, perform his music and adopt a persona he created. Prior to the Controversy tour, three women were selected, rather arbitrarily: girlfriend Susan Moonsie, wardrobe assistant Brenda Bennett (the wife of set designer Roy), and Jamie Shoop, an employee of Cavallo, Ruffalo & Fargnoli. Only Bennett had any singing experience. Prince planned to have the group, called the Hookers, wear lingerie onstage and sing sexually charged lyrics.
During the Controversy tour, plans shifted when Prince once evening at a club noticed an especially sexy young woman; she was copper-skinned, sultry, and had an overall appearance very much like Prince's own. "It's been said that when they met, they both stopped in their tracks; looking at each other, it was like seeing themselves, but of the opposite sex," said Alan Leeds. A scout was sent over to ask if she wanted to meet Prince, and she agreed.
The young woman, Denise Matthews, had show business aspirations and was thrilled when Prince said he wanted to contruct a band around her. Over the coming weeks, he explained to her the concept for the Hookers. She was taken aback, however, by the stage name he suggested for her: Vagina, albeit with the I pronounced as a long E. She refused, but agreed to the name Vanity.
Work on the project began immediately after the Controversy tour.

I have always wondered if Vanity asked Prince to change the name of the group from The Hookers to Vanity 6 or did Prince have the change of heart on that call? Any1 know that story?

if i remember correctly from an interview vanity did back in the 80s, she mentioned that after meeting prince, the next day they went on a date and morris day tagged along
i thought that was kind of interesting

Just as a sidebar has anybody seen basketball wives? The lady Evelyn has a daughter and that young lady looks like a young Vanity to me.

Thank you for answering my question. Sometimes I wonder about the original name because Vanity 6 group became famous not really for the music but moreso because of their potograph sessions. They were VERY erotic. | |
