Another What If... "1999 The Motion Picture" Here's an interesting thought (at least to me it is)... What if Prince was able to do a movie like "Purple Rain" one album earlier? Now I realize I'm making a lot of assumptions, and there are probably many logic flaws but play along with me...
I picture a much darker, funkier movie especially when you consider:
The songs from "1999" vs "Purple Rain" The music from "What Time is it?" vs "Ice Cream Castles" and The lust-filled sexiness of Vanity vs Apollonia?
Yeah it wouldn't have been nearly as commercial but i think it would've have been damned cool. However if it was even a moderate success "Purple Rain" could have been a sequel with subplots around Wendy replacing Dez, Apples replacing Vanity, and Prince's conflicts with his new musical/spiritual enlightenment.
I know you can't rewrite history but it makes for good conversation (I hope!)

I want to see the scene where Automatic plays

I can see 1999 the motion picture now.
*Cue Trailer Announcer Guy*
Imagine the year 1999. Imagine a future after a post-global nuclear catastrophe. Imagine lawless Minneapolis, where only the toughest survive. Imagine The Kid, torn between life, honor, love, and Roooooock N Roooolll!!!
Today's music may be a Thriller, but the soundtrack of the future can now be found in 1999!.
(Oh come on, you could imagine WB post-production forcing that cheesy diss at the big album of that time.)
Scenes/Songs
*"1999" - The climatic track for when The Kid survives the cannibalistic leather gangs (loses the drummer to them), gets the girl, and becomes the King of Town. Could even be the opening chorus, a belated mean ironic prophecy that the world failed to stop nuke proliferation, and well guess what? Both sequences preferably better with mutants.
*"Little Red Corvette" - Kid finds out his girl is the village bicycle: Everybody has taken a ride on her. He has to get over her hooker ways that she used to survive.Melancholic sequence.
*"Delirious" - a character suffers radiation poisoning, and goes delirious.
*"Let's Pretend We're Married" - club dance sequence, leading up to the wink wink nudge nudge, hanky panky.
*"D.M.S.R." - dance show-off competition between Kid's gang and the local skinhead gang.
*"Automatic" - prowling the streets for "action."
*"Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)" - Lead up to the big climax. (Instrumental version rehashed repeatedly for fight/chase sequences.)
*"Free" - Ode to what was lost due to nuclear conflict.
*"Lady Cab Driver" - the introduction track for the girl.
*"All the Critics Love U in New York" - hero arrogant and bragging.
*"International Lover" - love ballad.
(Eh it could've been better.)

Years ago,I did a thread like this well sorta....I asked everyone to pick "old" songs to be in Purple Rain.We had to imagine that Prince was allowed to make a movie in 1983/84,but not a 'new' soundtrack. He had to use previous songs. For example...
***instead of "Darling Nikki",he would perform "Little Red Corvette" in that scene.
***instead of "Let's Go Crazy",the opening song would be "1999"
***instead of "Computer Blue",he would perform "Something In The Water...."
When you think about it,many of the '1999' songs could have easily fit into the Purple Rain film.

When I saw the title of the thread, I immediately thought: "porno, with Prince as the protagonist. Ends in the world blowing up and Free being played during end credits."

I'd love it. It could set in a futuristic Jetsons type world. Actually, when the year 1999 arrived, it pissed me off that we still haven't reached Jetsons status yet. Andy is a four letter word.

Oh yes, this would've been amazing! Vanity, and Dez, & the old music from The Time in the movie Funky cuts like D.M.S.R., & Lady Cab Driver, I know I would've loved this.

One of the members of the Revolution (I think it was Dr.Fink) said that, back in 1982 when the song "1999" was recorded, they actually assumed that when 1999 really arrived, there would be condominiums on the moon I too was a little disappointed that in 1999 (the year),things weren't as "advanced" as I thought it would be.

Exactly. I thought we'd have cars that fly and be able to vacation on other planets. I also expected us to wear a lot of clothes made out of shiny silver materials. And just look at the songs from other artists that were out in 1982....Soul Sonic Force, The Jonzun Crew, Newcleuse, Kraftwerk, Warp 9, Instant Funk. Lots of futuristic sounding funk and I expected 1999 to be full of futuristic type funk also. Instead, people were wearing more "normal" conservative clothes than they previously were and slow shit hop dominated. Total disappointment. Andy is a four letter word.

Yeah I thought we'd all be wearing shiny silver outfits too, with V-necks. Don't forget the V-necks, ~Using the Fat Albert emoticon 'cause no one else is... ~
