What does it take for someone like Prince to hire you? How would you get someone of his caliber to even notice you? I know some might find this question stupid but I'm curious to hear your answers!

But if u asked this question before Andy's arrival i would say:

For being a rhythm guitarist in Prince's band you need to have great sense for rhythm.

Because his music is all about the rhythm.

You have to be into chords like D9(kiss chords intro)

and be able to follow his cues

He does have a good eye for talent though! Andy sure can sing, but I haven't heard her guitar skills so I can't really comment on that

Since pretty much everyone on here doesn't know him personally, I don't know if you'll get any real advice. But on Much More Music (Canada) when he was on the Musicology tour, someone asked how he picks people for his band. He said they get recommended to him from other musicians that he knows or already worked with. Basically, it's connections. Like his current keyboardist might say, oh there's this drummer I worked with, he's really good - something like that. Even &y, there was a post on the org about how P probably became aware of her, not as a guitarist but as an up-and-coming artist, through The Roots. So it's best just to work really hard at what you do and get noticed by musicians around you, then maybe your reputation will spread in his direction, maybe not, but at least you are a musician with integrity.

When/If your paths meet, it's best to be ready because he's supposedly very demanding (all the debate about &y's abilities notwithstanding ) - like Jimmy Jam says in the O7 doc, you can't be "waiting" for your big break, you have to be "preparing" for it, so when it comes along you can jump on it. Morris also says that P suddenly came up with the idea of forming a band, and if he hadn't come up with a ready & able set of musicians ASAP, it might not have happened.

The other thing is that, despite what most people here say, I think it's best to be yourself, have your own opinions, and tell things like it is. Of course, you have to respect your respective roles and that ultimately he pays you, but I've read on here, and then independently looked up the stories, that Jesse Johnson called him a liar and Candy Dulfer chewed him out, and he seems to respect that (when it's appropriate). I bet he laughed at Questlove too about the cuss jar (see other thread). I'd say you'd have to be confident and hold your own against him, but back it up with mad musicial ability.

Then again, maybe you just need to be the "look" that he wants. As the Millionaire Matchmaker says, "the penis does the picking!"

But her myspace page is quite professional, she was a professional musician, played in other bands before and she was like a spokesperson for some bass equipment, so probably it wasn't like P was messing about on myspace and then found out about her for the 1st time there. He seems particularly taken by girls who can play, so he probably saw her around bass forums and thought she'd be a good fit, since she's a fan of the funk and adores "Alphabet Street."

I think it was similar with Candy - she had been playing professionally before, was kinda known in Holland where he was on tour at the time, and he wanted to have her play in the band. Then he canceled on her and that's when she totally chewed him out. It's on her website.

So I guess there are some exceptions to getting recommended through people he knows, but both Ida and Candy can definitely hold their own, so it still applies that you have to be very skillful, ready, and confident in your abilities.

And then there's &y and Carmen Electra... so who knows!
