The first time I saw the Dirty Mind record was in a Sears. They used to have a record section back then. I thought "this is that Prince I want to be your lover guy,who had that womans hair whos single I bought a year or so before." We turned the cover over and there's Prince, laid out with extended leg like a cheap ass skid row whore. I looked at the titles and thought "Damn..he is nasty" in a prude fashion, not an intrigued fashion. I thought it was just some obscure record and that he was a weirdo for sure. It took 1999 fanaticism for my Prince balls to drop and go back and discover the album which had what I thought, some pretty good rock flavored garage tunes. I was then playing Sister for everyone who would listen at school to get their reaction. Sure I was two years late but still...others were onto Morris and crew singing Gigolos. But that back cover to DM boy...

lol I remember when I bought it too...George's Song Shop. Went in looking for it, saw the cover, waited for friends to leave. Took it to counter, George looked at me like, "really"?? Weeks later I went back for something else and he admitted that he listened to it to see what I was getting into and was blown away. From that point on when Prince came out with anything, be it an album or extended version, George had one tucked away for me. He turned me on to the ex. version of LRC. Everytime I listen to it I remember the day he played it in the store for me when he got it from Japan of all places, and I was like "what in the fuck is this guy on to come out with shit like this". I was forever hooked. The record store is still there. Sells hard to find vinyl.

1999 was my first Prince album, full stop. Sure, I'd heard I Wanna Be Your Lover, but I was a white college girl and Prince just wasn't on my radar, at all. Of course, after I went apeshit over 1999 (and saw the 1999 and Little Red Corvette videos), I had to search out anything else by this guy.

I'm curious though, a lot of his albums, not just DM, would cause people to think "Damn, he's nasty!" - what brought you around? I think it's hard for many people to get past the "nastiness," so just wondering how someone who's initially turned off by it gets past it.

There used to be a show on USA Network called Night Flight, and they would devote the entire episode to one artist. That was the only chance I had to see Prince's ouvre. Man, he definitely had such magneticism and mystique. There's a shot in the Dirty Mind video, the camera is doing a circle around him and he's eyeing the lens out of the corner of his eye... something just drew me in.

I DO, however, remember my reaction the first time I ever heard Sister. Sumbitch, I'll NEVER forget that! I really couldn't believe it...still, after all these years, kind of can't believe it. THAT was a risk!

My first encounter with Dirty Mind was on Christmas afternoon 1980.

I opened all my gifts that morning and then later in the afternoon remember being cornered by my dad whilst I was in my bedroom playing with said gifts.

He closed the bedroom door,handed me a present which was obviously a record of some sort and before I ripped off the wrapping paper said these words which I shall never forget..."DO NOT LET YOUR MOTHER KNOW I BOUGHT THIS FOR YOU,DO NOT LET HER SEE IT OR HEAR IT!"

I still play that same vinyl copy to this day.

same experience hear almost....1999 was what hooked me in even after having IWBYL single and liking my brothers Controversy tape with the title song Lets Work and Private Joy.

1999 brought me around. The video, band presentation, sonic sound, etc. The whole package. Hell I was just a kid when DM was released. I wasnt too progressive and hadn't even masturbated, shit.

Night Flight was my shit back then. They showed a lot of ish like Talking Heads, English band retrospectives etc. I loved that opening intro. Had to wait until 12 midnight or so.....

I already had the "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "Uptown" 45s. I had heard "Head" on our local Soul Train type dance show called "Black Gold" and also all over the three R&B radio stations we had at the time and I just had to get the song. I didn't know what it meant at the time, all I knew was it was funky as hell and I wanted it. I had seen Prince's new look on "Black Gold" because they would always show a picture of the album at the beginning of a song before the dancers started dancing. I was in Wilson's one night with my grandmother. They used to have a record section at that time. I was browsing through the records and came across the "Dirty Mind" album. It had a sticker on the front of it that said..."Music may be unsuitable for young listeners".....Well, when I saw that sticker, I just had to have it. Since my grandmother was buying it for me, I knew I had to get it past her in the store without her seeing that sticker until I could get it home and take the plastic off the cover. I simply placed my thumb over the sticker and showed it to her and said...."This is the one I want"....She looked at the big letters above his head that said "Prince" and she said....."Prince? Oh, that must be Freddy Prince (she thought he was Freddy Prinze) I didn't know he made records. Oh look, he's done gone in a junkyard and got an old mattress springs out".....She was just clueless and didn't even make the connection for what the mattress springs meant.

When I got it home and listened to it, I found myself searching for cuss words and getting disappointed because I couldn't find any. Remember, I had seen the sticker and was expecting to hear some big time cussing. I didn't know what "Head" meant at the time, nor "blowjob" in the song "Sister". Prince said "motherfucker" in "Sister" but he was saying it so fast, I didn't make it out until years later. I absolutely loved the music though but damn, was my little ass mad because I couldn't find no cussing after that sticker had gotten my hopes up.

Prince has class, he doesn't cuss, lol, and yeah, Prince has done, by far, nastier songs, but overall DM is about sex, directly or indirectly, so I guess that's why 1980 America "panicked" (sort of...)

Wow, this is hella cool to read. I haven't been back in Johnstown for quite a while...it's depressing to say the least, family has pretty much moved away, etc. But when I do go back, I always visit two places; George's Song Shop and Coney Island Hot Dogs!!! George's for the memories, the smell of old records, and just flipping through the myriad of records he has! I walk in there and I'm instantly flooed of memories of weekly treks to the store, spending hours looking, saving money to buy a record. And Coney Island...what is there to say. They are so good...I don't eat beef or pork anymore, but I make it a point to scarf down at least three dogs when I make it back there!

So is George still there? beard and all??

Oh, so it was a matter of age. I understand that. I was way too young, a wee tot, to appreciate "Erotic City" when it was playing on the radio - I thought it was scary, the intro sounded like the bogeyman coming out of the radio. Then 10 yrs later, during the freaky '90s, I really liked it.

I was wondering if an adult who finds Prince "nasty" would ever be convinced to venture beyond it.

I did the exact same thing,I would take songs from Dirty Mind to school so people could hear not only the unique sound that the new Prince was pumping but also the shocking lyrics and Album Cover.It was a giant leap from (For You) and (Prince).

Yeah George is still there, but i think he's slowly handing the store down to his son or someone else. last couple times I was there and asked if he had something I was looking for, he wasn't sure cause whom ever helps him now has rearranged things and it's not so easy to find stuff.
