Yes, banishedone is right - of course it's played by P - just like those acoustic versions of "Love is a Losing Game" and "Guitar" that he did (w/ Andy) over the summer. He's played acoustic on MTV and that CNN interview around the Musicology time too.

Don't understand the rant about buying gear at kmart... You seriously think that's Andy playing? clueless

i am pleased if this is indeed prince on acoustic .. his truth record was 'acoustic' and the guitar tones sounded plastic thin and crappy .. not since 'sometimes it snows in april' have i heard anything from prince that sounds even remotely like an actual acoustic guitar .. usually it sounds like he got some guitar with extra light strings and a thin body so he can play it easier .. but the sound is awful .. i have always loved his crazy sounds on his old records .. the new wave shit .. but he went from putting things thru effects and making something cool .. to just sounding plastic and thin on pretty much everything .. rainbow children had great tones .. but crap songs .. still nothing sounding like an acoustic guitar .. thats my gripe .. prince needs to sound more real if he is not gonna sound like a robot space alien purple funk creature anymore ... he just sounds like a crappy cheap knock off u buy at kmart for the last several records due to the equipment he chooses .. its a similar gripe as those who don't like the production of emancipation or new power soul .. its about tone and the instruments he uses to record

Whats wrong with being robot space alien purple funk creature?

No his production is much more real and raw then it was on Emancipation.

And back to the topic, that acoustic guitar ,timing, voicing ,strumms that is Prince 100%

Is that one or two guitars we're hearing? Sounds like two from the "I'm scared.." part. If so - Prince doing overdubs or Andy and Prince playing together?

The wooh is on the one!

I like it a lot. An acoustic, slowed down version really works. Hoping Prince will record or has his own version, with more striking guitar, obviously.

Genesia, Amy Winehouse had a scratchy voice.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

For me, it's not just that the vocal isn't "natural" or like she needs to clear her throat. It's that Andy's voice and accent (when she sings - she doesn't talk this way) sounds affected - like she's trying to be a young billie holliday or something, but she can't pull it off. I know singers can have different singing voices/diction/phrasing than speaking voices, and that it can be great. But if you're not good enough, or mature enough, or sure enough, or whatever it is enough, to pull it off, it can be kinda annoying. I think she's not yet mature or found herself as a performer.

Also, I personally don't like voices that are too wispy, no strength behind it. That doesn't mean I only like voices that belt - Sarah MacLachlan, George Michael, Sade, they can sing "softly" but there's a fullness/strength. My daughter's in a prestigious children's choir, and they're teaching her that singingly quietly or tenderly does not mean whispering.

Amy Winehouse had a "scratchy" voice, but it suited her, it sounded real, and it was good IMO. Same with Billie Holliday.

He should've just released the original damn track instead of getting her to cover it and piss on a classic like this. "Oui Can Luv"??? God, that's corny! Prince, stop playin' around and having your latest fuck-of-the-month re-record (and basterdize, I might add) your shit and just give the fans what they really want. Cuz, it sho'nuff ain't this shit!

Prince fans don't all want the same thing.

Prince has a very diverse fanbase that want different things.

Can Prince provide them all? No.

Speak for yourself, please?

nah he can speak for me as well cause the title alone says "the time is a changing" really why even bother posting this song? if i want 2 hear a version of this song other than P doing it then give me the version that's all george clinton from the hey man smell my finger sessions.

or hell give me the rocking 10 minute version that circulates with p and george on the vocals

acoustic version by prince singing it would have been nice as well like the version of Love that was done

if u want his back up singers singing mountains, we can funk ..knock yourself out ..

but don't u speak for all fans either

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Funny you should mention Billie Holliday. When I listened to this, I thought, "So. Prince wanted folks to think 'Sade' when they heard Bria, and now he has Andy riffing on Billie Holliday. Why can't he let these girls be who they are?"

Yeah, dude was damn near ready to thrown Miko out just because he was getting some of the chicks that he wanted. And, look what he did with The Time when Morris, Jesse, and the fellas were getting all that lady love from the crowd (in addition to the fact that they were kickin' his ass on an almost nightly basis). He started shuttin' that shit DOWN, so you KNOW he wouldn't take to kindly to some NEW dude taking away some of the ladies' attention from his old ass! lol

@artist76, Well put. I agree. Andy is okay but she's far from great. Prince probably thinks he can make her great by giving her his old songs to sing and trying to turn her into a female version of himself. He's not making great songs like he use to and he has made enough great songs that he doesn't need to write anymore but I think it's funny seeing him do what he's doing with Andy.

I get the feeling they are trying too hard. Andy mentioned on FB something about an idea her and Prince had for SNL. I don't recall anyone in Prince's band or anyone Prince was working with sharing on FB what they discuss in private? He gave her the O.K. Andy is Prince's link to the younger generation on FB and twitter. Prince is using her to put things out there. He can find out what the fans want and don't want. I doubt Prince and Andy know what direction they want to go as far as her career because she's not a great singer or musician. Andy is very good at imitating but there hasn't been anything too original about her. I liked two of her original songs and that's all. Her voice became a bit annoying but when I first heard her songs and how she put her first album out on her on she caught my attention until Prince took over. Her hairstyle is not original but she's pretty so people are praising her on FB and acting like she's the first woman to wear a big afro. I think people are only stroking her ego on FB because she's with Prince. All the modeling work she did in the past is coming out because she went on tour with Prince. It's good marketing and promotion for all parties. It's so funny how Prince quickly scooped her up and Andy is a pretty, impressionable, new artist from Cameroon so I can see why Prince chose her. Could she be his Golden goose? I doubt it. Again, I think it's Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

@Genesia, Prince can't let these girls who want to be stars be who they are because he's Prince. He has been turning people into the characters he wants them to be for a very long time.

I still haven't seen/heard enough of Andy to form an opinion, I like when Prince producers/writes for others, so I'll always be intrigued. If they keep with this acoustic/old school thing (whatever) they have going, it could make for an interesting side project - I'm always up for another protege album on the side smile

When I first saw/heard Andy sing on that Africa Channel special, her type of singing voice reminds me of an R&B singer named 'Billy Miles' with a twist of 'Erykah Badu' and 'Corinne Bailey' and some 'Jill Scott' thrown in, when she sings specific songs. I'll think she'll do just fine in her singing career. Here's a pic of Billy Miles;both have similar singing voices.

nod Another reason I won't listen to her sing his song. The title change is so corny. She obviously doesn't think so or wouldn't tell him even if she did think it was corny bcuz she's just happy to have this gig. As someone who has followed Prince4 career for many years I don't like when he tries to play people like they are mindless robots who should appreciate everything he does bcuz he's Prince. I couldn't appreciate Andy's cove of Amy Winehouse's song bcuz I felt Prince was using Amy's death to help give his new protegee more exposure. It wasn't a sincere tribute to Amy Winehouse imho. This cover of Prince's song is another thing to keep us going on about her so he can get more people interested in seeing them in concert. I get it.

They do? She's not the first to wear a fro and she won't be the last. Macy Gray has been wearing a fro for years. Most of those people must live in the boonies. There are a ton of Andys around, artsy fartsy girls at coffee shops, & poetry readings. Go to Venice Beach, Melrose, The Village in NYC, Little Five Points in Atlanta, you will see them there. There's nothing about Andy that stands out to me outside of her looks, and her connection to P.

Yes, Shelby can blow. Stacey Francis can blow. I will give give credit when credit is due, to people like that. However, I don't drink that Purple Kool Aid.

Her hairstyle is not original but she's pretty so people are praising her on FB and acting like she's the first woman to wear a big afro. I think people are only stroking her ego on FB because she's with Prince.

I still think he was really interested in Esperanza Spalding and - when he couldn't get her - went for a lookalike. shrug

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I'm sorry, but I hate all those affected, "look at me, I'm singing with laryngitis" vocals. disbelief

Get the frog out of your throat and put some support under the note, fer cryin' out loud. Have Prince show you how he laid on the floor under the piano or something.

AMEN!
