I vividly remember going into a local neighborhood record shop and telling the clerk, "I would like to buy a song, I don't know who made it but the name of it is "Soft and Wet." I still remember as clear as day taking the 45 out of the small paper bag after I paid for it, looking at the small record and seeing the singer's name on it, "Prince". I remember thinking Prince? That's a guy singing that song, I thought it was a lady! That is the first time I had ever seen his name, first time I ever knew of him, him, and I had no idea how much his music would bring me joy in the future and be such an important part of the joy in my soul from listening to his music. I will never forget standing on the sidewalk outside of that small corner record store, because that is where I met Prince.

Great story. I envy you being on board as a fan right from the beginning. Unfortunately for me that was not possible, I was negative two years old in 1978. smile

It was Little Red Corvette in 1983 and I was 13. I was hooked immediately from the video. I got 1999 for my birthday. I had a small allowance that I used for records. I was fortunate to go to school in downtown Philly so I had access to some great record stores that had great discounts. I remember getting Controversy and Dirty Mind first, and then Prince and For You, all were either $3.99 or $4.99 and I got totally immersed in the music. I think I even found Vanity 6 stuff then too. So that was my foundation before Purple Rain opened. Most of my teenage years was spent listening to Prince music. I can even remember where I bought most of the records, great memories and great music. It was a great time.

I'm the same age as you, and those were the good times weren't they. Miss the days of going to look through record bins, getting extended maxi-singles. My how times have changed.

From what I hear, I heard Still Waiting first, when I was still in my mom's stomach. With my own hears that I remember....I Wanna Be Your Lover was first I believe that I heard..but then again, it might have been Kiss. I was 3yrs old, so its kinda hard to remember. Purple Rain was the first that I remember loving so much I sang it every morning. 3yrs old and knew all the lyrics. lol

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

I Wanna Be Your Lover on Midnight Special, Partyup on SNL then the Controversy videos on MTV. At least I think I saw Midnight Special, was pretty young and my memory could be going off of seeing the videos in later years. I know for sure I saw the SNL one because it was the one at the end one of the guys dropped the f- word on the show and it became headline news. But if you've ever heard it, it's not exactly clear.

I know Netflix streaming has the show, but not sure if they cut Prince out of it for licensing reasons. I notice SNL cuts performances out from time to time, even when you watch it On Demand, they do it.

"I Wanna Be Your Lover", though at the time, I knew nothing about Prince. It took "Delerious", to turn me into a Prince fan!

yeahthat

Except in my case it took "Annastesia" to turn me into a true FAN.

The first time I heard him was probably when I was 5 or 6, but I can't remember the song. I became a fan because of Raspberry Beret.

Uhm...I bite.

How do you recall the date & time???

I was living in Birmingham, Al in high school. Junior year. ROTC. We had a parade rehearsal before school. I was supposed to call this girl who I had a crush on and make sure she was up. A local radio station would play the same song a 7 a.m. for the entire month. That month the song was 'I Wanna Be Your Lover'.' When I heard it start, I knew it was 7. I jumped up to call her and the line was busy. Call again, same result. Meanwhile, I'm listening to Prince express just how I'm feeling.

The song stayed in my head all day. After school I went and bought the 45. That weekend I bought the album. Never got the girl, but there was Prince.

The first Prince song I can remember hearing was The Most Beautiful Girl in The World. I heard it on the school bus one morning, and I can remember instantly falling in love with it but being confused as to whether it was sung by a guy or a girl. I was little at the time, so the best answer I could work out for myself was that a guy must be singing the really low notes while a girl sang the really high ones. I looked forward to my early morning bus rides for the rest of that year!
