Little Red Corvette, when I was 7, I had no idea who it was, what album and knew nothing about Prince then, all I knew was I thought it was a cool song.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I think it was Somewhere Here on Earth on Jay Leno.

But the thing is, I must've had heard the songs like Purple Rain, Kiss, and When Doves Cry before somewhere because when I listened to those songs, even though I thought it was my first time, I actually recognized the tune. Like, "Oh, I've heard this melody before!"

That happened exactly with me and Little Red Corvette and several Janet songs

The first song I remember hearing (with any recognition of who sang it) was Cream, and that was only at my friends' insistence that I watch the video clip. Much as I like that song now (and considered it a favourite for many years), it didn't 'click' for me at the time until I heard "My Name Is Prince" a few months later.

As dated as the latter has become now, I'm still fond of it, if only because it's the song that started me on my Prince journey all those years ago smile

That said, I'm sure I'd heard Kiss and WDC, maybe LRC and others, earlier, but clearly wasn't paying enough attention. Cream and MNIP are what I recall as my introduction to the purple funk.

I Love that awesome half joker half batman costume he wore and all the jokers and vicki vale dancers.. I thought it was incredible and I was intrigued and mesmerised and have pretty much been a fan ever since.. A video like that makes a strong impression on u that u never forget

Truthfully though, when doves cry was the first time I was aware of prince. I was 10 and saw the video on Telly. It creeped me out for some reason.

It was most likely Kiss, granted I was 2 @ the time. But my mom would have V103 & vinyl blasting back then...In my kid years, I listened 2 everything Jacksons more, but alot of that changed when I got into EWF in 93.My father bought me almost every cassette we could find @ Fantasyland Records on Peachtree St. When their new album @ the time,Millennium, came out, we went to Blockbuster Music (can't remember if was still Turtle's) & bought it. On it was Superhero, which was written by P. From there,I knew I had to have everything from him,& because of We Can Funk from Graffiti Bridge,I may have never got into P-Funk. So, thanx Mr. Nelson...smile

The first song I ever heard was "1999". Although at the time, I didn't even know it was one of his songs, I only learned that afterwards. It wasn't until I heard "I would die 4 U" - and saw the accompanying video ! - that I went over to the purple side (haven't been able to find my way back yet lol ).

Summer of 84 "When Doves Cry", was played on Top Of The Pops when they used count down the American Top 10. However, January 85, when the re-release of the double A-sided 1999/Little Red Corvette was played on TOTP, I recognised 1999, just did not realise Prince sang it, so that does not really count...

If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

"Soft and Wet" was the first song I remember mostly because a few folks were talking about the new dude with the big afro. The next year, I took a neighbor's copy of "Still Waiting" to my fifth grade end of the year party. But, having the neighborhood boys blasting all of Dirty Mind in the community park was what made me a Prince fan. I would sit under that tree all evening and listen to them play that tape over and over until my mother made me come inside.
