Riverman37

I think Riverman makes a few good points, but at the end of the day, no pop song needs to be debated in by philosophy students. Prince is not Nietzsche and Bob Dylan is not Kant. Some of P's lyrics about social issues show that he knows & cares about what is going in the world, but his superstar lifestyle means he's not really writing from experience.

I agree with your first line, but in the end its Prince himself that seems to see himself as some new 'guru' or great philosopher: it's not only in this song, its shown in its attitude during interviews (the Tavis Smiley-interview about the chemtrails), his remarks about burqa's, the 'if you are not with us, you are against us' message of the Rainbow Children, to give a few examples.

Indeed pop-songs aren't the same as thought out, philosophical pamflets, and most pop-stars aren't the greatest thinkers, but then at least don't present your lyrics as some form of 'higher', dogmatic truth. In that sense, i hold Prince responsible for the criticism himself.

Wow, some of you really make it sound like Prince is trying to get the next Nobel Peace Price, or passing an exam on ethics and politics in Harvard , or trying to convince you of something that you think is 100% stupid.

confused

Do you believe that somebody can have any sort of authority on your mind unless you let them have it? And what is the problem about an artist expressing himself and sharing his views if the media give him the opportunity and if he is willing to?

Prince interview on Tavis show is far from stupid. I wish everybody who gets on tv would show that much interest in what happens in today's society.

It's not about having the right answers, it's about having the right questions.

You don't have to like what P. thinks about this or that. But you have to admit that he is interested. Being where he is, he could just not care at all....

But don't you get the impression that he doesn't really know what he's talking about or, more to the point, he's constantly lashing out at anything and everything that doesnt fit with his views...where's the open-mind, respect and tolerance?

The might sound hypocritical given the content of this thread but there are very few examples on here where people are incorrect or don't back up their arguments....Princes arguments tends to just be "because I haven't read it in the good book" - well how many things have come to light since that was written (whether fact or fiction) and how many times has it been re-written ?

A lot of Princes 'controvesisl' tracks or interviews would be far mor credible if he didn't have his metaphorical fingers in his ears going "la la la...I'm not listening!!!!" to rhyme, reason, common sense and fact

Evolution is simple in reality...change or die and if you're still around then something's right in your genetic make up, if it's died out then it wasn't up to scratch for one reason or another = natural selection/ survival of the fittest.

Once again nothing to do with rocks or the Earths creation smile

I think you do Prince as an artist a disservice. He has written many pop songs where the lyrics are meaningless but this isn't one if them. They obviously mean a lot to him and if his fans were too vaccuous to even care about what he's writing about when he's in serious mode then he would probably feel like he is wasting his time. Imagine how the artist who designed the statue of liberty would feel if when it was unvailed everyone looked up and said "I love the plinth"

No ask yourself honestly would you be here dismissing peoples negative views on the song if the opening chorus was as I wrote it?

If Prince wants to write political and meaninfull songs then I think he as someone I highly admire as an artist deserves to have it critiqued, no?

If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

I Think he's sat on his purple throne somewhere slapping his forehead saying " sweet Jehovah...so THAT'S what evolution is and I never stopped to think I grew up in a broken home and did alright...apart from my grasp of reality I suppose"

"Larry...Larry....Larry.....LARRY!!!!.....any news on that camel yet?"

All I know is that I don't know what he is talking/thinking about. I am probably not bright enough to figure it out from a couple of lyrics or random excerpts of 15 minutes interviews on national tv. lol
My feeling is that the man is, like all of us, full of contradictions. But he has a beautiful heart, and that combination makes him the extraordinary artist he is.
That's all that matters to me, the rest (what he chooses to believe in or what he wants to share about his opinions ) might stir interest in me, but I don't feel the need take position. I'm not interacting with him and have my own views to figure out. That's enough of a job. nuts

"purpledoveuk said:The might sound hypocritical given the content of this thread but there are very few examples on here where people are incorrect or don't back up their arguments....Princes arguments tends to just be "because I haven't read it in the good book" - well how many things have come to light since that was written (whether fact or fiction) and how many times has it been re-written ? In the end, that's his choice. If he is the place where he needs to be now, why would you want to kick him out of it? Never worked for anybody as far as I know. Maybe he feels at home there...and I don't hear he is hurting anybody, is he? If he is at peace, good for him.

But, hey, that's only my perception and I'm not trying to convince anybody.
