I have no problem with people suggesting that evolusion is real, but....

Prince was right. Nobody cares.

Lyrics are just fine. Don't fuck with them.

biggrin

Honestly...I really don't know how to say this any other way because, despite lots of people saying it, you still keep insisting Prince is right - he is 100% not right. It's got nothing to do with God vs Evolution - he's referring to completely the wrong subject. He may as well say "upload the kniting principle..." for all the relevance evolution has to rock formations. That bit is simply wrong no two ways about it Also the 2 party line...could have sworn he had a hard-on for Obama not so long ago...surely Prince wouldn't be so shallow as to back Obama just on his skin colour without really knowing what he stood for....would he. Then the parent bit....could have sworn Prince grew up without a father and therefore he's admitting that he had no respect for authority. The most serious issues...Nazis and the Master Race - well that gets dusted over quickly with a claim it might leave kids isolated [Edited 10/20/11 7:19am]

Wasn't Prince's father responsible for helping him become the musician he now is?

Well there are people here who will be able to tell you for sure but I thought his fathers influence was , apart from being a musician himself, was leaving a piano behind when he left Prince and family at a very young age. I don't think he coached him in anyway and the 2 rarely spoke even in later life

I've always liked that verse (about the rock on the shore always being there), not because it opens up a debate about evolution vs creation or religion vs science, but because, to me, the verse made me think and open up "my" version of "reality".

Kinda like when I first got to the .org 11+ years ago and I'd go into chat and say, "Good evening everyone!" There would automatically be this backlash..."Damn Americans! Thinks the world revolves around them! Just because it's evening there they think it's evening everywhere." I hadn't really thought of it that way.

The rocks on the shore are there now, but now is just a blink in time (or is it? razz ). I've always taken that verse to mean, "Don't be so "me"-centric". Keep your mind open not just to things as you see them. Science and religion have their theories of why the world is the way it is. They are good to read, know and understand, but never be afraid to keep your mind open to the fact that those rocks may be on that shore for absolutely mind blowing, or completely simple reasons we don't know now and may never know.

Don't believe anything, just because it's been fed to you.

You're looking at this too linearly. It's a song, not a thesis, the lyrics don't have to stand up to peer review. But here, I'll tell you my spin on it.

Upload the evolution principle

Note that he says "principle", rather than "theory," so he's going at an underlying foundation for evolution, rather than the theory itself. I assume he's talking about the underlying principle that God is not the "creator" of all things.

You see a rock on the shore and say

it's always been there.

What does a rock on the shore have to do with evolution? Nothing really. What does a rock on the shore have to do with the principle that God had nothing to do with putting it there (aka the "evolution principle?") Well, that's kind of his point. Once you accept one seemingly innocuous principle, it can lead you to a place you may not want to go.

Personally, I'm gonna leave that debate alone. However, agree with him or not, there is a logic there if you remember that it's a song. It's not supposed to be a course in linear logic.

It's obvious really. The neanderthal put the rock on the shore so his homo sapien ancestors could wonder how it got there.

As far as the President goes, all I recall Prince saying about him is:

Well, the reason why is because I'm one of Jehovah's Witnesses and we've never voted. That's not to say that I don't think Barack Obama - President Obama - is a very smart individual and he seems like he means well. Prophecy is what we all have to go by now.

Not exactly a glowing endorsement/hard-on. Perhaps you're making assumptions about Prince's political beliefs based on his skin color?

This is prince.org, people criticize Prince for sport.

I think it's more about the idea of re-writing lyrics. It's lame when Prince does it, and it's even lamer when orgers do it.

It's one thing to criticize Prince. It's quite another to think you're a better lyricist - and then give abject proof that you absolutely, positively are not.

The former is fine. The latter is batshit crazy. Especially in this joint.

I definately do not think I am a better lyricist than Prince or even close, or even a lyricist at all. I was just questioning one paragraph in one song so lighten up but how praytell did I achieve your claim that I have in bold?

I'm still not convinced...I think he just made a mistake because he has little interest or knowledge on the subject (just as I do religious theory). But surely you could just as easily flip it and say it HAS always been there even if God dropped it there

I don't think Colonized Mind needs a lyric change at all. The song makes perfect sense. Now whether or not one agrees with Prince's outlook on society is another issue entirely. But let's not act like he is saying something totally inconcievable. SMH at The Org...

But that's where it falls down...let's put aside the fact that Evolution doesn't have anything to do with rock formations or anything to do with where the planets earth etc came from....Evolution and science in general does not claim to have the answered to everything which is why Darwins Origin of Species was widely accepted by the Church at the time...his theory explained adaptation and survival of the fittest but still left some questions unanswered and even refers to 'the creator' in some exitions (yes ive had to read it...more than once). This allowed the Church to say "what a fantastic theory, we agre...God made that happen"....and they still can. This is where Prince reveals his 'ignorance' towards science/evolution...he's basing the verse on hearsay - the same hearsay that makes people assume that the theory says we evolved from apes we see today like chimps and gorillas and that there's a missing link...we didn't and there isnt

That's the whole strength of Creationism and why it is perpetuated...you can't prove God (or anything) doesn't exist, do there no comeback to "God did it" There's a planet out there made of chocolate with giant strawberries riding snails....prove me wrong. The theory of evolution has enough evidence behind it now that it is considered fact and taught as such where as Creationism is not allowed to be taught as fact by law and, in a twist of fate, is now considered just a belief theory as evolution once was...even in religious schools.

Hey - we could all be wrong, maybe the strawberry people put the rock there smile
