What I can't see is the need for Prince to enter into this debate. I mean, to discuss religion in these terms, confronting it with science. I prefer when he sings about his beliefs, even with enthusiasm as in Anna Stesia or Lion Of Judah, and that's it. It's more personal, more moving.
But anyway, I still think, and even more after reading this thread, that the lyrics of Colonized Mind aren't absurd, they make a point, whether you agree or not. [Edited 10/21/11 4:59am]

[Edited 10/21/11 4:59am] Well if he wants to enter into the religion vs science debate then that's fine (after all we are here sort of)...it just needs to be accurate to be taken seriously. The Evolution bungle aside its still a fairly diluted song if it's meant to get a point across... It basically says the wrong scientific theory created the earth Nazis make kids unhappy Democracy doesn't work He didn't think to be sensible with money and not spend it all on special jewellery and put someway instead of renting camels at midnight And if you know anybody who's a single parent then tell them to give up because the kids are doomed and will be little shits

Wanna talk about it Colonized Mind Upload, the evolution principle You see an ape and say “Did we really share some kind?" Download, the urge to question things Do your research then decide your mind Upload, the master race idea Genetically disposed to rule the world Download, a lesson from history Don't sit back and let the same unfurl Upload, the 2 party system The lesser of 2 dangers, Illusion of choice Download, the willingness to make a change Nothing happens if you don't make it Let them hear your voice Listen to me one time : Upload, a joint venture record deal An artist so blinded by fortune, the contract he forgot to read Download, retrospective regret The first contract was naive but the second was greed guitar Upload, a child with no father Download, a mother still teaching wrong from right Upload, a child with no mother Download, a father giving everything to make the future bright

colonized mind is a perfect example of an intelligent, inquisitive mind grinding to a halt. it's full of bungled ill thought out contradictions. he's getting pretty good at it too, if there's anyone out there who can logically explain beginning endlessly then i shall extract and eat my pancreas. don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

This is the problem with over-analyzing song lyrics. It's true that Prince is probably making a point that may not stand up to scientific scrutiny. I doubt that he gives a crap since it's his song and he's trying to artistically convey a message. That's why he's an artist and not a scientist.
Did he base his views on hearsay? Well I doubt he (or you for that matter) conducted his own independent research into the the biological mechanisms underlying changes in species over time, so yeah he probably did. Does that automatically invalidate his views? Of course not. He may have read the same things that you or I have and reached his own conclusion. Intelligent people can look at the same set of facts and reach incongruent conclusions. Even something as widely accepted as evolution. Such is life.
All that said, it's one lyric in a friggin pop song. He didn't need to provide endnotes for his sources. He doesn't have to explain lyrics that may be a bit obtuse on first listen. He has, however, sparked discussion of a relatively weighty subject among his fans. That just might be enough for any artist.

What the hell is that story about camels at midnight? I've seen the Kevin Smith doc, but never took this part very seriously. So what's the deal?

I think the rumour is he was caught trying to cross the border witha camel on the back of the Purple Rain motorbike...or the camel was driving and Prince was the passenger...I can't remember. I disagree with you on that point.
IMO the issue is: since he became a JW (probably even earlier...), he is trying to present himself in his songlyrics and during interviews as some philosophical and social connaisseur, as someone who knows what life and religion are all about and what 'we' should do to be happy.
He is presenting himself as more then a pop-singer, as some 'know-it-all', while he is writing lyrics that on a philosophical or metaphorical level can easily be debuted by any first-year philosophy student.
No wonder people make fun of him.
And you will always have certain people who feel that because they are 'a fan', they should support him in his lyrical nonsense. Some of them are probably not smart enough on a philosophical level to realise he is talking nonsense. Others might feel and think he is talking nonsense, but give him the benefit of the doubt too much, because he is their idol.
To put it short: Prince himself is trying to present himself as some philosophical wonder, which he simply isn't. No doubt it backfires on him.

I don't get that feeling... I would say that he is simply expressing himself. Why couldn't he share his views on the contemporary world? No need to get irritated by it: he is neither your boss, nor running for elections.

I think the objections are down to innacuaracies (evolution/science), sweeping statements (Single parents) posing as some kind of anchor on a weighty arguments. I'm sure he'd laugh at me if I tried to disprove the existence of God by saying how ludicrous it was that Jesus built the ark in 48hrs. The one thing that's based in fact he brushes over..."Nazis, tsk - bit naughty aren't they"

I think Riverman makes a few good points, but at the end of the day, no pop song needs to be debated in by philosophy students. Prince is not Nietzsche and Bob Dylan is not Kant. Some of P's lyrics about social issues show that he knows & cares about what is going in the world, but his superstar lifestyle means he's not really writing from experience.

I dont think Prince would have wanted it to be taken lightly so it's dangerous territory to use your stage to go after things when your argument is, at best, flipant and built on shaky ground or worse just plain ignorant [Edited 10/22/11 2:41am] [Edited 10/22/11 5:30am]

I don't think he mentionned nazis. He is refering to the fact that in the USA there are 2 powerfull political groups that rule the country, but none of them is genuily serving the interest of the people. They rely on propaganda and mind control (through media, mass consumption, advertisement....) to KEEP people under their influence=veiled form of fascim. Nazism is a different ideology. In a few word, in nazism you get the race delirium based on the biological theory of the superiority of a race (Aryan). You also get a plan to systematically eliminate what is considered to be inferior to that race, in order to achieve a 100% pure perfect population.
The debate about evolution/creationnism? Honestly, I don't understand much about that. It is not something we debate here in Europe, at least not in a dual kind of way (creation versus evolution). Plus, I have to say that the lyrics are not very explicit about P. position. Is he writing that there is no evolution, that everything was created according to the views of US creationism? I can't figure that out just by reading the lyrics. Now, maybe JW believe that... I don't know. Single parents? I understand he is is talking about a father figure and a mother figure, which don't have to be the actual biological mother or father. I work in the field of child protection, and it is a well know fact that a child need a nurturing figure to learn how to care and develop social skills AND an authority figure to be able to set boundaries and deal with frustation/angst. So I dont think he is so much wrong about that one.
As for having a conversation about Jesus with Prince .... that might be quite an experience .

Because making your point once is never enough. Nooo! Being a redundant spammer is the way to go! Neoncrackbaby? You're the very first person who's ever called me that. You really are. As for having a conversation about Jesus with Prince .... that might be quite an experience . It's been talked about so much on here that I won't risk reiterating the arguments about the first verse...just to say that it's not about picking Cretionism vs Evolution - evolution should not appear in the context he uses it. Also he falls down because the rock HAS always been there regardless of how the Earth was created. The Master race statement is surely about Nazis...if not he uses yet another wrong phrase.
