I'd say 80% of people look at me crazy when I reply 'Prince' as my favourite artist. Why is someone who was once the epitome of cool and hip now so underground and forgotten?

Something that contradicts this happened today though.

I work with this ageing, homophobe rocker, who is into Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. I normally I stay well away from him but on my way in today, he spotted my earphones and asked me what I was listening to.

Knowing his views, I hesitated to answer. "Um...Prince."

"Cool. Prince is fucking mean on his guitar.He did some good stuff." He sort of nodded and looked impressed.

I just walked by gobsmacked.

I would argue that, with the exception of the immediate Purple Rain era, Prince has always been an "underground" artist.

It might also be that "express[ing] my love for Prince" part that weirds them out. I've been a Prince fan for 30 years and people who do that even creep me out.

They think of him as gay.

Being a Prince fan is like belonging to a private privilleged community. I stare @ ppl who dont know/like Prince as if there complete nut jobs

When I have on a Prince shirt or button the 2 most common questions I get, and the 2 answers I always give, are:

Q "Is that Prince?"

A "Of course."

Q "You like Prince?"

A "Doesn't everybody?"

because you are a freak. just remember the freaks are on this side, dont cross over to the other side. i prefer to be unlike most of the world when it comes to things i like.

most(and i mean pretty much all people) dont know anything about prince outside of purple rain, and a few of his other pop hits. they see him as nothing more than an effeminate, vapid, talentless song and dance man

Why? He's the one who marketed himself using the androgynous & is he/isn't he image early on in his career. That can't be deleted from the public's psyche just because he doesn't market himself that way anymore.

i know i was telling the peeps at work about the shows i saw this yr and the ones my age or older thought i was crazy and the younger ones kept saying that little wayne was better and more prolific.

F'em...Prince is brilliant and makes music that makes us happy. Don't like it? So what.

He's seen amongst the everyday people as either gay or a genius. Sadly most consider him gay. But when someone likes Prince it not just "oh he's alright" its "wow he's good." So either you hate him, love him, or have never heard of him. No in between really. Or at least that is just me.
