my generation's music taste is so horrible, when you people were kids did adults feel the same way?

in my experience the adults in my life, not just parents, still had good taste in music. or at least you could still hear the goodness in the music the older folks listened to. my parents were baby boomers- they grew into adulthood with motown, the beatles, brill building, dylan the singing groups of the 50's etc. it was different than prince madonna et al but good quality. i think these last 20 + yrs of music is simply subpar. sonically, structurally it just doesn't hold up. popular music from the 50-early 90's was buildt to last. or strived to be. not the case anymore- production is shit and buildt for now. in all genres of music, imo. one is not more disposable than the rest.

Absolutely...I'm glad I'm not the only one to had this perception...people only seems to know Purple Rain... one of my friends who only listens to underground rock or reggae thinked he was dead the other day... sad Craziness...

Never happened to me. When I tell somebody I like Prince, the first question is usually: Is he really that short? And after that they either like him or they don't. Maybe here In Holland we're used to folks being a little weird more than in some other parts of the world, I dunno. And even the ones who don't like him, realise he is a good musician. And that's what counts.

Here in Britain (not that i'm speaking on behalf of Brits), he's pretty much either respected fully, adored or just gets shrugged off as an 80s legend. At worst it's just your every day person who knows nothing about him or if they do, it's that ridiculous rib rumour.

I have the feeling that although most don't know much about much of his music except the hits, he is a respected musician here in Denmark.

To answer your question I think it may have something to do with:

1) The fanatic way you express your love, or

2) The less than respectful people you surround yourself with

The conversation normally goes:

Hey, What music are you listening to right now?

Prince.

Prince? That weird, gay guy, with that high voice? (crazy look)

What do you say to people like this? It's a huge percentage of people who do this too. Thats all they know.

pssssshhh some of u stop whining and take it as an opportunity to introduce Prince to others biggrin

I personally liked the fact that I got to make my friends listen to him for the first time. No one around me really had known much about or cared for Prince until I told them about him. It's not like they're fans of his now but at least they know a few songs of his...because of meee!! yay cool

It really is ignorance, if they heard the music they'd like it.

My young cousin who only listens to modern music heard The Holy River in my car and said "oh he's quite good actually!"

Hopefully he will get an official YouTube channel and show the world what they've been missing!

I think, as time has passed, Prince has proven to larger audiences what his fan base, music lovers, and critics alike have known for a while -- he is a powerful performer. In the 80's and 90's, Purple Rain notwithstanding, folks thought of him as a prissy, sex-obsessed "song and dance man" (to use Bono's phrase. His performances at the 2004 Grammys, RRHOF ceremony, Super Bowl, recent talk show appearances, etc., and his becoming an elder statesman of sorts, have IMO made more of an impression on the general public than even 1999 or Purple Rain.

Anyone who knows me knows I've always been a devoted Prince fan. In high school, the reactions were mixed, but a lot of friends I had dug him to a certain level too. In college and in my 20's, the reactions were kind of, "really?" because of albums that flopped and the whole WB contract debacle. But as I hit my early 30's, Prince's resurgence was beginning, and I noticed a shift to him being accepted as a great musician who put out obscure records but could sell out a venue because he was an "event." Kind of like Jimmy Buffett, in a way.

My friends and people related to me think he's a great artist. Almost everyone I know was at his shows, sometimes several times over.

Real recognizes real. I don't hang out with lames who would try to give me shit about it. It wouldn't work anyway.

Back in the 80's Prince was the freak.
Now the people only remember (if at all) that period.

I've been a bigger fan of him than anyone I've ever known, period. I still feel that way about his Purple Rain heyday material.

But for the last 10 years or so I think of his hardcore fans as silly and naive and kind of weenie-ish. I actually think Cure fans are more mature than Prince fans.

That's . . . interesting. I mean, when the symbol first dropped, it was an update on the symbol used in PR and elsewhere, but it was still looked at by the larger public as, well, un-masculine. Leading to the question asked here.

Just remember it's their loss not yours. I don't expect everyone to like his music or even respect his talent, but when they give me that look, like they know better I just laugh at them.

I once told a co-worker of mine, from my homestate of NY, that I moved to MN because of Prince... just to get a rise out of him (I really went to college here and loved it).

He tried to ridicule me in front of about 50 co-workers repeating what I said to him. I quipped back, "And now you know why I really left NY". wink Assholes. Not all of them mind you, but let's just say the ratio of cokehead to human is a lot higher.

You are a freak...I am a freak, and proud of it! But...we know something the masses don't really understand...his musicianship and his song-writing perfection! I compare it to my love for David Lynch and his projects. Most people don't even know who he is...and those who do just think his stuff is "weird"...

....so let your freak-flag fly high baby!!!!
