A single record that displays the genius of Prince

THere are so many Prince records that display the unequalled genius of Prince. When Doves Cry always springs to mind when I think about the song that I would offer to someone who never heard a Prince song and wanted to know why he is such a genius. It is obvious but impossible to deny.

But it is not the only Prince record that should be considered. I was listening the the piano version of Old Friends 4 Sale completely stunned me the first time I heard over 20 years ago and it just did again 2 minutes ago. I dont know that there has ever beena better vocal performance from Prince. The lyrics are among his best - especailly since you can hear the melancohly pain from his real life experiences upon which the lyrics are based. Good listen to it with the heaphones on if you have it and see what you think.

Two great choices. Sign O' The Times and Joy In Repetition also come to mind.

I've always felt that "Crystal Ball" is one of those songs that encompassaes his genius as a musician. Not to mention the psycho-sexual-quasi-political-paranoid worldview that made so many of his lyrics brilliant during his creative peak.

Not the most commercial of songs, but as far as representing Prince's artistry, it gets the point across.

The multi layered vocals of Love Thy Will Be Done are jaw droppingly genus.

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!
