Stevie Wonder vs. Prince who is more progressive? Stevie Wonder and Prince, two great music legends known for their various mix of different styles in music. But who is more open progressive in his work, who made more success when experimenting with different music formes? I would say Stevie Wonder because of his phenomenal album Journey to the Secret Life of Plants. To me that album kills almoust everything in popular music . example : http://www.youtube.com/wa...Jo50mFZqQs
And Stevie Wonder invented the Camile (Maybe your Baby)
i think both artist are very experimental but Stevie was a step higher then Prince . [Edited 9/5/11 12:48pm] [Edited 9/5/11 12:48pm]

Oh boy, for my ears it's Prince hands down. Stevie is great and powerful! But Prince made stuff like "Bob George" or "Soul Psychodelicide" or "Rave into the Joy Fantastic" or "Glam Slam '91" or "Pheremone" or "When Doves Cry" which are all far more creatively unique and deviant from established pop music styles.
How do you define progressive? My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

There are different forms of progressive in music. In popular music artists who are not affraid to go beyond standard pop format . that is progressive. For example Queen were the best progressive band. they started as a Heavy Metal mixed with Glam they invented Speed metal,Trash metal but they also made a succesful excursions into different genres such as : Disco -Another One bites the Dust Soul-Cool Cat Punk-Sheer Heart Attack Synth pop-Radio GaGa and on their last albums they went to the mothership a heavy guitar sound

Much respect to Stevie and his beautiful life's work, but no one touches Prince's artistry-no one!

As far as progressive goes? Prince. He likes throwing curveballs at his fans way too much. With Stevie, you pretty much know what you're getting.

I prefer Stevie based on his five classic albums alone, but I wouldn't say that he's better than Prince.

Ever heard Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants?
Edit: Or even Talking Book? That album broke new ground for black artists. [Edited 9/5/11 14:01pm]

Must we pick between Stevie and Prince?
Can't we just celebrate them both?

I love, love,LOVE Stevie.....but Prince is more progressive to my ears. I haven't heard Stevie do anything Prince couldn't, but the reverse isn't true imo. Good music makes me happy.

Not saying Stevie didn't do groundbreaking work or Secret Life wasn't ambitious. I just consider Prince more progressive.
Not sure if you knew this, but Netflix has Secret Life of Plants on their streaming video.

I'm a 19 years old and I can hear stevie's influence far more clearly on music than Prince's. I mean his albums in the 70's how he used keyboards etc on them was crazy and noone was doing that before him...

U can hear Prince production style in a lot of 80s music and even now, with a lot of 80s elements coming back. The way Prince used the synths as brass and his drum programming u heard a lot after he done it and still.
I dont really know whos more progressive, im fan of both. But stevie made a new sound and stuck to that sound, which was great, his whole 70s era was just the best. Prince on the other hand made his whole MPLS sound but also did a lot of different experimental stuff, like on Parade.
I think Stevie was more consistent on making good solid songs and Prince did a lot of experimenting which not always made good songs.
In the end it always about a song just being good, not how much you experiment. Everybody can use all kinds of different elements and instruments just to be original. But will it work out?

(but stop using that as a cop out Gray...you know liking something is subjective, which doesnt take away from an artists skills etc..hell I hate Metallica music but I know them jokers can PLAY etc.)
