The White Album vs. Sign o' The Times
vs.
Two career defining masterpieces. Both great albums with classic songs. Both regarded as classic albums by critics and fans alike. Which one do you choose, The White Album or Sign o' The Times?
(I honestly don't know what to choose, so I'll back out of this one).

I've always thought they seemed equivalent in some ways, a complete mix of genres, but a certain sound that carries through. Also a certain degree of non-commercial songs, more experimental in that they don't pander to a teenage audience in terms of sound or lyric. They also both don't seem "fun" for the most part, and have a kind of midnight serious mood, even when there are silly elements. Of course they are both sprawling double albums in the time of vinyl. I can't stand listening to The Beatles, so it's an easy choice for me...

Actually not a big fan of the white album. I prefer Abbey Road and Sgt. Pepper, so I'm going with SOTT

How can you do this to me?!
Very hard to choose one considering how much I love them both.
The white album really took the Beatles back to more conventional rock after sgt Pepper and Magical mystery tour, I think it was a good move. Yer Blues and Happiness is a warm gun are two of my favourites.
Going to have to sit on the fence here and give them both 9 out of 10. [Edited 9/4/11 10:07am]

If you could only own one album, from cradle to the grave, it would be that same White Album.
So... no choice, really! Stop the Prince Apologists ™

That's a hard choice for me. Can't really choose because I love both albums very much and like someone said, they compliment each other stylistically and mood-wise. Prince's album was his answer to the tail end of the 80s, while The Beatles' was their answer to the tail end of the 60s. Check me out and add me on:

Pretty sure SOTT wouldn't be around without The White Album. Prince is a Beatles fan, and you can tell this album is one of the MANY inspirations in SOTT. So... just saying for those who are saying the white album is ''garbage'' lol Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Love both..but I'm going with the one that I heard first and can listen to all the way through without skipping a song.
The White Album. | |

Actually that probably is true, SOTT would probably be very different. So would a lot of artsy albums including "Songs in the Key of Life". It's kind of like that Ray Bradbury story "A Sound of Thunder". In that story going back in time and stepping on one butterfly changes the entire future. But the White Album was a lot more than a little butterfly!
People don't seem to realize just how popular The Beatles were, and how ALL ears were on them in their time. if they, in 1968, released a double album with no artwork on the blank all white cover, with a tracklist of songs that jump genre and mood including many strange arrangements and even a sound collage... then you can bet it was a door opener and example for all recording artists that came after. There are unmeasurable iterations of influence.

that's like comparing 3 albums, Paul's bit of the White album, John's bit of the White album and prince's sign o' the times
(and for the record, Paul pisses all over John)
Unfair to compare i think [Edited 9/5/11 8:27am] Hamburger, Hot Dog, Root Beer, Pussy

don't forget that George contributed two very important songs: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Piggies"
("Piggies" is important because Charles Manson derived personal meaning from many songs of The White Album. "Piggies" was used in particular to justify attacks, with the lyrics "what they need's a damn good whacking". During the murders of Sharon Tate, Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, Gary Hinman and others, the words 'political piggy', 'pig' and 'death to pigs' were written with the victims' blood on the walls. In the case of the LaBianca murders, knives and forks were actually inserted into the victims in reference to the lyric "Clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon" My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

...................................what was the question?
I adore SOTT...but I go for the White album....
Dear prudence, While my guitar gently weeps, Happiness is a warm gun, Blackbird, Yer Blues, Helter Skelter, Julia etc.
I think I want to listen to the white album right now....
(I was listening to Abbey Road...when I saw this topic )

The White Album by a wide margin.
SOTT is fantastic. But the schizophrenic, epic, genre-bending insanity of The White Album wins.

no comparison at all, The White album.

Love both of them. There's more variety on The White Album, so if I had to choose one for eternity, I'd go with The Beatles! Love me some SOTT though! Whenever you say that you can't, that's when you need to be trying.

Since Im more endeaqred to Abbey Road anyways..and the fact that TWA doesn't have Adore on it....I pick SOTT "Climb in my fur."

I actually probably like SOTT more than The White Album, and I'm a huge Beatles nutbar.
