Guitar Players: The Right Way To Play Purple Rain

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32X0Y4Q1dOk

Made another video - it highlights how to play Purple Rain the right way.

There are a ton of videos out there but none of them are correct. Most people are playing major chords but as you can hear, they're incorrect.

sorry but

You're funny trying to school people while you have it wrong yourself confused lol

first ; your guitar is OFF KEY

2nd ; you're playing it half a note too high ; it's in b flat major , not in a minor at all

I know it's far easier to play it in a major (which you are doing) , i do that too , but it's not right

You do play it right , but half a note too high and off key

First, the guitar is not out of key - it's also in tune.

Second, it's not a matter of what's easier to play - it's about playing the chords correctly!!!

The third and fourth chords are not majors... Half a note too high?!?!?!?!

Terrible?!?!? What exactly are you referring to?!??!?!

This isn't a personal composition kid? It's a demonstration of how to play Purple Rain the way Wendy plays it on the record...

Your logic is just more of a demonstration of how ridiculous the ORG has gotten over the years.

Oh man... The key is right, but you just can't play and the guitar IS out of tune.

This is surely NOT the right way to play PR, regardless of the fact that these are the right chords that you are trying to play.

1st - it IS out of tune

go get your ears checked

sorry but if you can't hear that you have no business making music

and certainly no business in trying to lecture anyone

2nd the song should be played IN B FLAT MAJOR not in 'a' whatever you wanna call it

He IS playing (rather: trying to play...) in the right key, not a half note higher, and he's not playing a minor chord, but the correct Bbsus2, so you need to check your ears too... wink

But of course you're right in saying that the guitar is out of tune.

rolleyes

nope on the record the song is played in b flat major

try and tune your guitar and play along or play it on piano like i do , both

and you'll notice it's in b flat major

also , if you check the first avenue dvd (where it's been recorded) and look closely to his hands you'll see him play that

btw the guitar was terribly off key there , i wonder how they fixed that

biggrin

I don't need to "try and tune my guitar and play along" - I have ears too wink

Of course the song is in Bbmajor, and the right chord is Bbsus2. And that's what this guy is trying to play. (Even though his guitar is out of tune and he can't play it properly either.)

you really shouldn't tell anyone to get their ears checked if you yourself can't tell the difference between a Bb and an A. He is playing a Bbsus2, not an Am.

Also: you say he's half a note too high. FYI: the next note above Bb is B, not A, so I really don't know what the hell you're trying to say... smile

youre on the right track, but youre not doing it entirely right. and in that video, the guitar is either not perfectly in tune, or youre just accidentally bending the strings slightly to make it sound that way.

however, i dont think its terrible.

This is not a great lesson either - he's got the chords wrong. (Of course maybe he's just playing it in this simplified way to make it easier for the beginners.) Close, but wrong.

Jayardahb at least got the chords right, he just can't play them well.

for the record, the chords to Purple Rain intro are (with finger positions in the order of EADGBE strings) :

Bb sus2 (x 1 3 3 1 1)

Gm11 (3 x 0 3 1 1)

F add9 (1 3 5 2 x x)

Eb add9 (x 6 8 10 8 6)

Your logic is just more of a demonstration of how ridiculous the ORG has gotten over the years.

You're calling me 'kid'? You probably hadn't been born when I started playing the guitar.

To begin with, as pointed A LOT OF TIMES BEFORE, your guitar is not properly tuned in that video. But if you insist that yours are the correct chords, I CAN perfectly understand your unability to hear an improperly tuned instrument.

Secondly, you're playing incomplete chords and you're playing them as if they were power chords (just the bass strings) because otherwise they wouldn't sound. Try to strum all your 6 strings the way you're using those chords and it'll sound like shit, because you're 'forgetting' about the Major 3rd in a couple of chords: F add9 and Eb add9).

Finally, the chords posted by KaresB are correct, but everybody forgets the first chord should be Bb sus2/D. It's a first inversion of the chord and the bass is on the third of that chord (i.e. D). Wendy explains that on DVD2 of the Special Edition of Purple Rain.

If I jumped on your back when I saw your post it was precisely because all of you 'lives-forgivers' on the internet think the rest of us really 'need you' to play our instruments properly, that's why you all say 'This is the right way' and things like that, when 90% of the times you clearly show you're clearly clueless about what you're trying to TEACH.

So, guy, first of all learn how to tune a guitar properly, develop an addiction to Q-Tips so that your ears can really make out what's coming out of the speakers and if you succeed, be a little HUMBLER and start a thread called 'This is how I play PR, do you think it's correct?'.

Had you done anything of that, you'd face a totally different tone in people's comments, SMARTASS.

i've seen that interview but i don't have the dvd with me now and can't remember exactly what she said - but didn't she mention the D as being part of the Gm11 chord? Anyway, you could be right that she did say Bb sus2/D, but the thing is, even if she said that during the interview, i just don't hear a D note in the first strum of Purple Rain, she just didn't play that on the released version. I only hear a Bb sus2 chord.

Maybe it's because of the flangered sound of the guitar on the track but playing that D bass over the Bbsus2 chords makes a big difference. Try it.
